Red Sox News From The Fort

Here’s a look at a few of the stories coming out of Red Sox camp.

Craig Hansen has new pitching coach, John Farrell, to thank for helping him reinvent his slider. Farrell noticed that when he pitched from the third base side of the rubber, he was giving a lot away. So a simple move back to the first base side has helped his mechanics. This is great news for the bullpen. If Hansen can regain the form that made him a first round pick when he was labeled “the future closer”, the Red Sox bullpen situation might look a little brighter.

Kyle Snyder pitched well in the 1-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. He went three innings, allowing two hits, no runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. This outing should help him make the Red Sox since he is out of options. Another thing it may do is increase his trade value. He is normally a starter but would take any chance the Red Sox will give him. He’s even open to closing.

“I believe I could. My stuff is good enough and I think I could even throw with more velocity.”

No matter what happens, Snyder expects to be collecting a MLB paycheck somewhere whether it be in Boston or somewhere else. If I am Theo Epstein, I am talking with other teams to see what Synder may bring them. The Red Sox would definitely want a very good reliever in return for Snyder. But what the hell do I know, I’m just a blogger.

After returning from the funeral of former Phillies coach, John Vukovich, Curt Schilling threw a simulated game. In that game, he threw 81 pitches. This is what Curt had to say about the simulated game over at 38 Pitches:

Worked my pitch count up to 80 and was told my last three FB were 93-94 so the arm strength is coming. Had very spotty command with it but I felt that all four of my off speed pitches got better. Threw more change ups and a higher % of good ones. The split was definately better in the bullpen, pretty much the best it’s been in 2 years, which was a great sign. Slider felt great and the curve ball was better than normal as well.

Arm and legs felt strong and I don’t think 80 pitches was anywhere near the limit, so that was another great sign. Broke a few bats with the 2 seamer and also got a few outs, and some swings and misses on the change up, overall it feels better every day.

Had a great chance to talk to some of the younger pitching prospects in the organization today who came over to watch and also throw, including Daniel Bard, Rozier and a young man named Masterson. I apologize for not remembering names but it was pitching day so I didn’t hear very much.

I do know that both Rozier, a big lefty, and Masterson, a big righty, can throw. Both kids had very live arms and good breaking stuf

Next up will be Sunday and it looks like a minor league start is in order. We are playing to O’s on Sunday and it looks like we get them on my NEXT start as well, so I may end up throwing against them next week depending on the schedule.

He also answers more fan questions. I have to say this again. I really think it’s great that he has the balls to be so open to the fans and answer questions. I am sure it won’t be a Q&A everytime out.

Brendan Donnelly said he wouldn’t mind being the closer for the Red Sox this season.

“If Tito gives me the ball, I’ll (expletive) take it,” Donnelly said. “You think I don’t want that (expletive) role? If you want to give me the ball, give it to me. I’ll take it.”

“The bottom line is however things shake out in the end, I’m fine with (it),” he said. “When they call someone in and say, “ ‘You’re the closer,’ the rest of us have to fall in line as a unit.

“To say it’s a competition suggests you’re rooting against someone or hoping someone else fails. That’s not the case here. If it were, the (expletive) who feels that way should get the hell out.”

“It’s all or nothing,” Donnelly said. “It’s up to you to get those final three outs. The rest of the team has done its job to get you the lead and now all of that is over. There’s no one left to come in and save you. You’re either leaving the field high-fiving or getting (expletive) thrown at you.”

We all know it takes a certain mentality to close. Obviously, Donnelly has the closer’s mentality. Can he pitch? Yes he can pitch. He had a lot of success in Anaheim with the Angels. Hopefully, he can keep that form up here in Boston. Whatever role he pitches in, I feel comfortable. And I am sure the Red Sox feel the same way.

The Hits Keep Coming…

Join us for our inaugural show tonight as we discuss such topics as Barry Bonds, Gary Matthews Jr., Roger Clemens, the new Japanese imports and their impact on the game, the boom in the free agent contracts this offseason and many other subjects. If you would like to call in and talk us, the number is on The Hits Keep Coming Link or you can click here.

Battle of the Billionaires

Here’s a subject that I don’t touch on at all but find very interesting because I am a fan of Donald Trump’s ‘The Apprentice’ show.

Back in mid February, Trump challenged WWE mogul Vince McMahon to a match. It first started out as Trump wanting to wrestle McMahon. Then McMahon counter-offered that each person would choose a wrestler to represent them. Trump agreed and said that since he has the most famous hair in the world, that the winner gets to shave the loser’s head.

Well the “Hair Match” will take place at Wrestlemania 23 on April 1st in Detroit at Ford Field. Just a two days after accepting the bet, McMahon announced that the “Samoan Bulldozer” Umaga would be his representative. About a week later, Trump chose ECW World Champion, Bobby Lashley, would be his representative in the match.

A week later while meeting in the ring, Umaga and Lashley got into a stare-down match that eventually ignited a huge brawl that took nearly 3 dozen people to break up. This action caused the WWE directors to get together and they decided that a guest referee was in order. On March 5th on RAW, they decided that “Stone Cold” Steve Austin will be the guest referee.

Well on Monday night, they got together to finalize the deal by signing the contract. It was a war of words between the two billionaires and ended with Trump shoving McMahon over the table.

I, for one, will find it funny if Trump loses. Everyone knows for him for his hair kinda like everyone knows Jimmy Johnson for his. With Wrestlemania 23 being on April Fool’s Day, you can only wonder what both of these two have up their sleeves.

The player to be named later in the Mark Mulder trade to the Cardinals, Daric Barton, is showing he might be the best part of the deal.

The crafty old veteran, Royce Clayton will be the starting shortstop in Toronto this year.

Casey Fossum returned to the hill after missing the last month of the 2006 season with shoulder issues.

The Cleveland Indians have settled on all the roles for the members of the bullpen but one, which was opened up by the retirement of Keith Foulke.

The Mariners have a new ad campaign set to debut. They will be available on Wednesday to view at mariners.com.

Orioles beat reporter, Spencer Bordin, tells us if the Orioles good pitching will continue when the season starts.

Automobile-challenged right-hander” Carl Pavano pitched well in his start against the Red Sox on Monday night.

If Athletes Pursued Movie Careers

The fine folks over at Movies.com have a pretty interesting feature, “You Oughta Be in Pictures” that debuted on Monday night. They took a look at 25 celebrities and political figures, including 7 athletes. Those athletes are everyone’s favorite QB, Tom Brady, soccer’s favorite Spice husband, David Beckham, American tennis stud, Andy Roddick, Miami Heat star guard, Dwayne Wade, racing hottie, Danica Patrick, ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and WWE hottie, Stacy Keibler, and the grunting tennis beauty, Maria Sharapova.

Here is a look at Tom Brady’s “You Oughta Be in Pictures” profile.

Tom Brady

Tom Brady

In real life: He’s the Super Bowl-winning quarterback of the New England Patriots.
Why he oughta be in pictures: He’s been pretty high-profile since high school (he went to the same one as MLB star Barry Bonds), winning an Orange Bowl and three Super Bowls, a Movado watch ad and a GQ cover — and he’s even hinted at having political aspirations. Yet his squeaky-clean image belies a sense of humor — he’s hosted Saturday Night Live, made cameos on The Simpsons and Family Guy and had a bit part in Stuck on You. Plus, serious skills making passes at the ladies … though he’s currently dating Leonardo DiCaprio’s leftovers (supermodel Gisele Bündchen), he’s an expectant babydaddy with his ex, actress Bridget Moynahan.
He oughta be in a remake of … The Longest Yard. (used with permission from Movies.com)Surprisingly enough, no athletes were in their “Please Don’t Go Into Pictures” profiles.

A very good feature done by the movies.com people. I am sure that we can all think of other athletes that we want to see in movies or don’t want to see. Honestly, I hope Shaq keeps to playing basketball or arresting bad guys because after ‘Blue Chips’, his acting career went down hill.

Red Sox Spring Training Update

Here is a look at some of the news from spring training at Red Sox camp.

There was a Japanese invasion at City of Palms on Monday night as the Red Sox actually couldn’t have any fans come to the game due to the 10,000 Japanese media members that took over the ballpark. The reason why is Hideki Matsui made the trip from Tampa with the Spankees and because of the Red Sox Japanese imports, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima. Ok, I am joking about the 10,000 media members but judging from what I saw on the tele, there was alot of Japanese media.

This will definitely bring an added dimension to the greatest rivalry in sports. Both Matsuzaka and Matsui were huge stars in Japan before they came over. Matsui has been here for 5 years so he knows what to expect. They are being compared to each other in the sense that Matsuzaka is the pitching Matsui, meaning that he is to pitching as what Matsui is to hitting as far as their star power in the land of the rising sun.

With Matsui already established as a Major League star and being six years Matsuzaka’s elder, the Boston right-hander paid the proper form of respect.

According to a translator, Matsuzaka said to Matsui, “I’m sorry to bother you right before your game. [Matsui] said, ‘Don’t worry about it, thanks for coming over to say hello.’ He wished me good luck, so I wished him the same and said thanks.”

Things were more personal between former teammates Okajima and Matsui.

“Long time no see,” Okajima told Matsui. “He said to me, ‘How have you been?’ I was really excited to see him. I wish we had more time to talk. He told me he’d give me his number later and would see me during the season. I’m looking forward to meeting him again soon and having dinner with him.”

The Red Sox made 5 more cuts on Monday. They returned Rule 5 draftee, Nick Debarr, to the Devil Rays. They also sent down pitchers Abe Alvarez and Kyle Jackson, catcher Dusty Brown, and outfielder Kerry Robinson.

Red Sox Win Spring Series Vs. Yankees

In their only meeting of spring training this season, the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees by the final score of 7-5 to take the first battle of the season. I kid I kid. It really means absolutely nothing that the Red Sox beat the Yankees on Monday night.

Interesting game at City of Palms on Monday night. Tim Wakefield’s knuckleball wasn’t all that sharp as he gave up four runs on 8 hits in 4 innings of work. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out 1. J.D. Drew kept up his hot start to spring training by hitting his first home run of the spring. Kevin Youkilis and Mike Lowell were both 2 for 3 in the game.

It was an interesting lineup for the Red Sox as they started all their regulars minus Varitek (Mirabelli was catching because of Wakefield on the mound), while the Yankees brought one of their Japanese imports, Hideki Matsui, Robinson Cano and the Giambino to the Fort. Thats why I say it really doesn’t matter what happened in this game. It’s about getting ready for the season.

Speaking of getting ready for the season, Craig Hansen pitched well in the 9th inning to pick up his first save of the spring. He gave up 1 hit and struck out one for the save. Actually the Red Sox entire bullpen (Brendan Donnelly, J.C. Romero, Manny Delcarmen, Javier Lopez and Hansen) on Monday pitched very well allowing 1 run on 5 hits in 5 innings of work. They also struck out 5 and didn’t walk anyone. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for the Sox as they get closer to breaking camp.

In Case You Were Wondering…….

why there wasn’t a lot of posts on Saturday, well it was laundry day for me. That means a trip to the parents house to do the laundry since we don’t have laundry facilities in my building. And of course besides seeing my parents, I get to see the family dog, AJ, who loves when I come to visit. Probably because I am a food source for him or because I take him outside and play. Either way, it’s always nice to my parents and him while I am out there. So I thought I’d share a few pictures.

When you mouse over them, it will give you the pictures description and by clicking it you can see it enlarged:

UCONN Women Open Up Against UMBC

The UCONN Women will open up their bid for the NCAA Championship in Hartford vs UMBC (University of Maryland at Baltimore County) on Sunday night. If they win that game, they would face the winner of New Mexico/Wisc. Green Bay. The game is at 9:00 PM and will be televised on ESPN. Since there is a game at 7:00 in Hartford, I’d say the start time is more likely 9:30.

Good luck to the Huskies in their bid for the title.
