Wednesday’s Half Marathon Around the NL

The Mets and MLB are helping a local little league replace their stolen equipment.

Freddy Garcia will be pitching for the Phillies tonight without a pitch count.

The Nationals pinch hitters aren’t getting the job done.

While their closer is on the DL, the Braves plan to share the duties between Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano.

The Marlins hitters are at or near the top in most categories hitting wise in MLB.

Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter looked sharp in his simulated game on Tuesday.

Brad Salmon was throwing heat for the Reds in his MLB debut.

The Brewers are giving fans every reason to believe this is their year.

Cubs 1B Derek Lee thinks Alfonso Soriano is trying to hard right now.

The Pirates season tickets are down 20% this year and that could be why attendance is lacking.

Astros pitcher Jason Jennings doesn’t want to a rehab assignment when he returns from injury.

A KOA radio broadcaster has the triple play ball from the Rockies game on Sunday.

Jake Peavy is on a nice tear for the Padres right now.

The Diamondbacks are adding rookie Micah Owings back to the rotation.

The Dodgers gave Nomar Garciaparra the day off after the 17 inning game on Sunday.

The Giants, for the most part, stayed healthy in April.

Papelbon Blows Save; Sox Lose in 10

Guess what Sox fans? Jonathan Papelbon is human.

After a perfect 8 for 8 in converting saves, Papelbon gave up a lead-off single to Bobby Crosby and a two run HR to Travis Buck in the top half of the 9th inning, which allowed Oakland to tie the game at 4. Oakland then touched up Brendan Donnelly for a run in the 10th and then A’s closer Huston Street came on to retire the side as the A’s beat the Red Sox 5-4 in ten innings.

The Sox got on the board in the 1st inning when Coco Crisp singled and then proceeded to steal second base. Big Papi hit a single and Coco went to third. Manny then drove in Coco with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Kevin Youkilis then followed with a single moving Big Papi to third. Youk then stole second while Mike Lowell was at the plate. Lowell then hit an infield single that scored Big Papi and then Youk scored when Crosby made a bad throw to make it 3-0.

The Sox then went up 4-0 in the 3rd inning when Youk hit a sacrifice fly that scored Coco. The A’s got on the board in the 4th when Dan Johnson hit a home run on a pitch that Curt Schilling left up. The A’s then got their second run when former Sox 2B Todd Walker hit a pinch hit sacrifice fly.

Schilling was the Schilling we all know and love. He managed to scatter 8 hits over 7 innings not walking a batter. He struck out seven batters as well. Most of those came on his splitter.

It’s tough to see Papelbon blow a save. Just when you think you have the game won, he blows the save. You know what though, it’s baseball. It happens. He can’t go the whole season without giving up a run. One bad night by the bullpen won’t kill this team. Although Hideki “Darkman” Okajima was the bright spot out of the bullpen tonight, retiring all three batters he faced.

I fully expect Papelbon to rebound from this. He really didn’t have command of fastball and I know he will make the necessary adjustments. Don’t fret though Sox fans, it’s just one game.

Time To Come Out Of The Closet John

Sooze from Babes Love Baseball sent me over this video and not being a Yankees fan, I felt it was my duty to share it.

Darkman

Way back at the beginning of Red Sox spring training, everybody’s eyes were focused on Japanese import Daisuke Matsuzaka and no one had their sights on the other Japanese player the Sox had signed, Hideki Okajima. Okajima didn’t seem to mind this at all and even came out and said “I’m willing to be a hero in the dark.”

A fellow blogger, Peter from Peter’s Red Sox Forever, came up with the idea of a nickname for Okajima, “Darkman”. He sent me an email asking me to help him try and get the name to stick. So when I write about Okajima, I always try to use “Darkman” in Okajima’s name. A week or so ago, Peter received an email from Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe about Peter’s idea of the “Darkman” nickname. So now I am trying to do my part a little more and give you this illustration.

Hideki Okajima is Darkman

FSN Northwest will not renew a broadcast deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. The network has decided to move away from amateur athletics.

Speaking of amateur athletics, the Boston Celtics severed ties with guard Sebastian Telfair after he was arrested with a loaded gun in his car. Too bad – Telfair was the only shooter on the team.

Lenny Wilkens has been promoted from vice chairman to president of the Seattle SuperSonics. Apparently, he was the fifth caller. Congratulations, Lenny – that’s the equivalent of being promoted from 1st mate to captain on the Titanic.

In baseball, Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost broke his collarbone while jogging. Thousands of midwestern sports fans plan on using the incident as an excuse to work out even less. A Brewer collapsing. Wow – is it July already?

Deceased running back Damien Nash’s brain has been donated to science. What a blow to Pacman Jones, who has been waiting for a brain for some time now.

Parry O’Brien, the 3-time Olympic shot putter who founded the spinning technique, died at age 75. His last words were, “UUUGGGHHHH!!!” His ashes were spread at sea, precisely 75.3 meters from the boat.

And a man in jail for the last 25 years became the nation’s 200th inmate to be set free because of DNA evidence. Also this week, O.J. Simpson had a great round of golf.

Three More Huskies To The NFL

It’s post draft day and most of us here in New England are still salivating over Randy Moss signing with the Pats like a dog does over a nice T-Bone. With that being said, you may have missed the latest UCONN Football news.

Three more Huskies will get a crack at a shot in the NFL. RB Terry Caulley, TE Dan Murray, and DT Ray Blagman all signed free agent contracts with various NFL teams. Caulley has signed with the Washington Redskins, Murray with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Blagman with the Arizona Cardinals.

While they will be participating in NFL mini-camps, their teammate, DE Jason Ward, will be trying his luck in the CFL with the BC Lions.
