Steinbrenner Death Watch For 6/6

nymedia66.gif

Sorry for the delay, Big Stein was trying to figure out why there was hockey on the Newsday cover. He is also trying to figure out how a team from Toronto was in 2nd place and not his team. He is happy though the Yanks picked up a game in the standings. But this whole hockey business on the cover of Newsday has him steaming.

Red Sox News & Notes

Red Sox News & Notes @ SOX & Dawgs

Did the long trip and game on Monday night take it’s toll on the Red Sox last night? I think so because Lenny DiNardo was throwing batting practice to the Red Sox and all they could manage was 2 hits off of him. He induced 4 double plays to get himself out of trouble. As Peter, from Peter’s Red Sox Forever, points out in a comment, this isn’t the June swoon. I sure hope not because it’s been fun to watch so far this season.

With that being said, let’s take a look at what the mainstream Boston and Oakland area media has to say about the game and other happenings.

J.D. Drew understands his benching and hopes to right the ship very soon writes Amalie Benjamin. [Boston Globe]

Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi

birdright.gifwnba0062.JPGI came across this last night and I found it highly entertaining. Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi are doing a duel blog. Here is the description from the blog.

Throughout the 2007 WNBA season, these two longtime friends, teammates, roommates, competitors and fellow fun-loving troublemakers will exchange correspondence in this “Buddy Blog.” They will talk about anything and everything that comes to mind, all the while keeping each other up on how the other is doing in their travels and the march towards the Playoffs. And thanks to either kindness or dumbness, they have decided to share their letters with the world…

So if you’re a UCONN fan, Taurasi or Bird fan or just a WNBA fan in general, check it out. I have included it in my blogroll on the side, look for “The Buddy Blog”.

Wednesday’s Half Marathon Around the NL

Former teammates reunited when the Astros played the Rockies.

Chipper Jones won’t come off the DL for the Braves on Friday when he is eligible.

Damian Miller returned to the Brewers lineup after a hand injury.

Mark Mulder’s rehab is coming along nicely for the Cardinals.

Angel Guzman is heading to the DL for the Cubbies with forearm tightness.

Three Arizona Cardinals took batting practice with the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

Takashi Saito isn’t ready to test his injured hamstring on the mound yet for the Dodgers.

Barry Bonds is out of the Giants lineup right now with shin splints.

No news is good news for the Marlins about Wes Obermueller’s freak injury.

Carlos Beltran returned to the Mets lineup after missing 3 games with knee soreness.

Ryan Wagner will miss the rest of the season for the Nationals after shoulder surgery.

Josh Bard has stopped studying himself on videotape and it’s paying dividends right now for the Padres.

The Phillies series with the Mets is could help them get back in the race if they win the series.

Rajai Davis had a 21-game hitting streak in the minors before being recalled by the Pirates.

Josh Hamilton returned to the Reds lineup after a battle of gastroenteritis.

The Rockies called up Sean Barker after they designated Steve Finley for assignment.

Former Players Help Defeat Sox 2-0

Former Red Sox pitchers Lenny DiNardo and Alan Embree played a big part helping the Oakland A’s defeat the Boston Red Sox 2-0 on Tuesday night. Eric Chavez homered for the second night in a row and Nick Swisher added an RBI double for the only runs of the night. The loss was the third in a row for the Red Sox and the first time they have lost 3 games in a row all season. It was also their 5th loss in six games.

I’ll be honest. I passed out during the game. I was exhausted from staying up late watching Monday night’s game. I woke up around 2 am and just caught what I missed on MLB.tv.

I thought Daisuke Matuszaka pitched really well. He went 7 innings, allowed 7 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and he struckout 8. A much better outing for him compared to his last start against the Indians.

Unfortunately for him, the Sox hitters couldn’t take advantage of 6 walks from DiNardo. They only managed 3 hits, 2 off DiNardo. The Red Sox also hit into 4 double plays and had another when Coco Crisp was doubled off first.

Dustin Pedroia lost his 14 game hitting streak and J.D. Drew sat out the game with a lefty on the mound.

I have to ask this. Did we really spend $70 million dollars so that Drew can only play against righties? For about a 1/4 of the cost, we could have kept Trot Nixon out there.

Anyways, here is a link to the game story. These West coast games are tough but I will do my best to provide a story for you to read.

What’s In a Name

Only in independent baseball would you ever see this.

longest-name.jpg

That’s right. The Long Beach Armada, who play in the Golden Baseball League, have decided to change their name to Long Beach Armada of Los Angeles of California of the United States of North America Including Barrow, Alaska. Otherwise known as LBALACUSNAIBA.

“In order to better reach the larger Armada Nation, we felt compelled to lengthen the name to incorporate all our fans stretching from the warm beaches of Los Angeles to the frigid beaches of the Artic Circle,” Golden Baseball League CEO Dave Kaval stated. “Our inspiration was Arte Moreno’s brilliant marketing gambit of positioning the Anaheim Angeles as an LA team. Being a real Los Angeles county team, we too wanted to extend our reach as far north as possible.”

The team was in the news last year when Jose Canseco played for them.

I’d hate to be a radio announcer or public address announcer in that league.

Steinbrenner Death Watch For 6/5

Big Stein is not happy. The NY media is calling for Roger like he will be the savior. Big Stein hopes so. He doesn’t like seeing the team called the Devil Rays ahead of him. Oh and did I mention, the Yanks are tied for last again.

Red Sox News & Notes

Red Sox News & Notes @ SOX & Dawgs

For those of you like me who stayed up and watched the game last night, you saw a great game. A game in which the Sox trailed and fought back, only to lose on a walk-off home run in the 11th inning. I give the team credit. They could have easily packed it in for the game after a long night of travel. But typical of this 2007 Sox team, they battled to the bitter end.

With that being said, let’s talk a look at what the Boston and Oakland area media are writing about in today’s paper.

Welcome To The Slugger Round

Terry Francona barely squeaked by with 31% of the votes in the heated Before They Were Managers Round of the Rookie Card Playoffs. Tony La Russa, whose card was chiseled out of stone in 1904, came in second with 23% of the tallies while Joe Torre’s 1962 Topps All-Star got him only 17%. Willie Randolph was on his tail with 16% and everyone’s favorite Venezuelan hothead, Ozzie Guillen rounded out last place with 13% of the votes.
