Wakefield, Bullpen Lead Bosox to 2-1 Win

Wakefield acknowledging the crowd. After going winless in Seattle, the Red Sox got some strong pitching from Tim Wakefield and the bullpen as the Sox squeezed out a 2-1 victory over the Rangers in front of a packed house at Fenway Park on Roush Fenway Racing Night. Wakefield went 6 â…” innings, and Manny Delcarmen, Hideki “Darkman” Okajima and Jonathan “Ocho Cinco” Papelbon finished off the Rangers.

Wake gave up two hits in the 1st inning. Kenny Lofton, who went 4 for 4 with 4 stolen bases and a walk, led off the game with a single. He was retired when Jerry Hairston grounded into a double play. Michael Young followed with a single but Slammin Sammy Sosa popped out to second to end the inning.

The Sox threatened in the 2nd inning off of Ranger’s starter Jamey Wright, a former New Haven Raven. Manny Ramirez led off with a single and went to third on a J.D. Drew single. Mike Lowell grounded into a fielder’s choice that saw Manny going on contact and being caught in a rundown between home and third for the first out of the inning. Wily Mo Peña followed with a fielder’s choice of his own that got Lowell out a second as Wily Mo beat the throw to first. Alex Cora, in for the uber-slumping Julio Lugo, struck out swinging to end the inning.

Wakefield scattered 3 hits over the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings. He allowed two doubles to Marlon Byrd and an infield single to Lofton.

Boston finally got on the scoreboard in the 4th inning. Manny led off the inning but getting hit with a Wright curveball. He went to third on a Drew ground rule double to right. With the infield in on the corners, Lowell grounded out to former Sox utility guy Ramon Vazquez at third for the first out of the inning. Wily Mo brought in Manny with an infield single to Young at deep short, giving the Sox a 1-0 lead. Cora ended the inning by grounding into a 5-4-3 double play.

Texas got the run back in the top half of the 5th inning. The newly acquired Adam Melhuse started the inning off with a double and went to third on a Vazquez sacrifice. Lofton worked a walk off of Wake and stole second with Hairston at the plate. Hairston drove in Melhuse with a sacrifice fly to Wily Mo, making it 1-1. Wake got out of the inning by getting Young to ground out.

Big Papi avoiding the tagBoston would score the winning run in their half of the 5th on a very strange play. Doug Mirabelli flied out to center for the first out. Dustin Pedroia worked a walk off of Wright but was retired at second on a Kevin Youkilis fielder’s choice. Big Papi was walked and both Youk and Papi moved up a base on Wright’s wild pitch with Manny at the plate. Then the strangeness began. Manny hit a shot up the middle that Wright stuck his foot on and kicked over to Vazquez at third. Instead of trying to get Manny at first, Vazquez went to tag Big Papi but not before Youk could score. Since, it was not a force play, the run counted because the hustling Youkilis crossed the plate before the tag on Papi. This run ended up being the winning run as it gave the Sox a 2-1 lead.

Wake got into a little trouble in the 7th inning after getting the first two outs of the inning. After a Melhuse groundout and Vazquez strikeout, Lofton reached on an infield single. He stole second before Hairston was walked by Wake. The walk of Hairston ended Wake’s night. Delcarmen came in and walked Young to load the bases. With a full count on Slammin Sammy, Delcarmen blew a fastball by him to end the inning.

Wakefield’s night was just what the doctor ordered. He went 6 â…” innings, scattering 7 hits. He did walk 4 but also struck out 4 in his 8th win of the season.

Darkman came in the 8th and worked an easy 1-2-3 inning. Meanwhile the Sox tried to add an insurance run in the 8th inning. Lowell led off the inning with a single off of Rangers reliever Frank Francisco. After Wily Mo and Cora made outs, Jason Varitek pinch-hit for Mirabelli and was walked. Pedroia grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.

Papelbon came in for the 9th inning and had no problems retiring the first two batters he faced. Then the emotions came out. Lofton grounded a ball to Youk, who flipped to Papelbon for what they thought was the third out of the inning. But first base umpire Mike Reilly called Lofton was safe. Papelbon’s emotions then came out as he got into the face of Reilly and was arguing the call. Papelbon was probably an “F-bomb” away from being tossed had Pedroia, who is about 5 foot nothing tall, pushed Papelbon back from the argument. With Lofton being safe, Papelbon had to return to the mound and compose himself. He ended up hitting Hairston in the wrist with a 96 mph fastball in the wrist. He did settle down enough to get Young on a 97 mph fastball that was called for third strike. The save was his 19th in 20 chances and helped Wake even his record at 8-8.

You have to love Papelbon. He wears his heart on his sleeve and that’s what you need in a closer. I was glad to see Pedroia push him away from getting tossed because odds were had he got tossed, he might have been suspended a game or two and thats not what you want. Plus you’d be going into the bullpen after using your best 3 relievers. So it was good to see him settle down and the strikeout of Young.

Josh Beckett takes the hill for the Sox tomorrow night as he looks to get his 12th win of the season. Gametime is 7:05 PM.

Red Sox News & Notes – 6/29

Darkman and Tek

When the Red Sox embarked on the long trip, they left Boston with a 8 ½ game lead over the Yankees. Now the lead sits at 9 ½ while the Yanks have fallen on hard times again and dropped to 11 out. So while the road trip (4-5) wasn’t a complete success, they still managed to put a litte more distance betwen themselves and their AL East foes. The Sox will now play 7 at home before heading out to the Motor City for a 3-game set before the All-Star break.

The Sox were off yesterday but that doesn’t mean the Boston and Dallas area media was sleeping. So let’s take a look at what they have to say.

NBA Draft 2007 With Your Host, Steve

2007nba.jpg

Much like the rest of the blogosphere Sox and Dawgs has decided to go with a live blog/random thoughts look at the NBA Draft. Here’s our version.

WOOF! Does Greg Oden remind anyone else of a pug with all them damn wrinkles in his forehead?

Kevin Durant had a weird look on his face when Stu Scott interviewed him. I think he was trying to figure out what Stu was looking at.

What did you think of Joakim Noah’s get up? I thought he looked like a tan Tiny Tim on stilts. I’m still looking for the ukulele and the chick with bad teeth. Joakim said he needed something “funky”.

I wish we had the feed from the WAMU during the commercials. I wanted to see if Stephen A. Smith is knocking back the Cheez Doodles again or if he changed his snack food.

I finally figured out who SAS reminds me of. He is the ghetto Howard Cosell. With the choppy speaking interspersed with his brand of ghetto-ese.

Is Ray Allen gonna be a Celtic? According to Mike Tirico there are “sizzling rumors” about such a deal. What the hell is a sizzling rumor? Does that mean Paul Pierce has Danny’s balls over a fire? ESPN is reporting Allen to Boston for Delonte West, Wally Sczerbiak and the #5 pick.

Glad to see ESPN’s Ric Bucher stole Bart Simpson’s forehead and haircut. I kept waiting for him to say “eat my shorts”.

Now the Chinese guy Yi Jianlian (pronounced E Jan-leann) doesn’t want anything to do with Milwaukee. Does he have a problem with beer and brats? Is he scared that Bud Selig will sell him a car?? I can see the promotional campaign now wherever he goes. Are you on the Yi? We got the Yi come check it out. You need any Yi? Oh the possibilities.

Wow what’s with Dickie V. and the golf shirt buttoned all the way up to his ears? He must have to pop the middle button just to eat.

SAS says the draft won’t be that deep. He needs to eat something besides the doodles. Try some veggies it will give you brain power.

Rachel Nichols says Michael Jordan had his cell phone in his ear and was still making calls. What Jordan didn’t say was those calls were to his bookies.

Quick someone get KG a pimp. He’s whoring himself out to anyone who will listen so he can get out of Minnesota. Right now at 7:26 ET the rumor is Golden State.

There’s 12 guys in the draft room of the Trail Blazers all thinking the same thing. We best not fuck this up.

Who spiked David Stern’s Sprite???

Oh now SAS is ball washing the Blazers before they even have made the pick.

SURPRISE!!!!! Greg Oden was drafted #1. Didn’t you just wanna see Stern say the Blazers selected Joakim Noah and then say nah I’m joking.

Jay Bilas says Oden is a star and hey SAS concurs. “You can’t teach 7 feet”. Uh thanks for the tip Doodles.

What’s up with Stu and the ‘hand dancing” during the interviews???

Celtic have supposedly acquired Seattle’s Ray Allen for the 5th pick and will select Jeff Green for the Sonics. The Celtics also will send West and Sczerbiak to the Sonics.

Meanwhile Seattle takes Kevin Durant #2. His mom Wanda Pratt is so proud. She’s thinking “baby I’m gonna get to drink Starbucks anytime I want”.

How long will it take now for Portland and Seattle to compete in the west with San Antonio, Phoenix and Dallas?

Quote of the night: “This third spot is the hot spot in the draft because we pretty much knew for a few days it would be Oden and Durant.” ~ Mike Tirico. All I got to say is DUH.

Atlanta takes Al Horford third.

I wonder what percentage of players in Jay Bilas’ mind have a high basketball IQ?

Horford’s dad is named Tito. He related to the Francona’s?

Who is this guy who is saying that “Al Hartford” is a bad choice for the Atlanta Hawks?

Memphis takes Mike Conley Jr., number 4.

So now his dad will be raking in the big bucks as he represents both him and Oden. It’s Mike Sr.’s first gigs as a NBA agent.

3 of the first four picks have been college freshman, only Horford is a junior.

The trade is complete between Seattle and Boston and Boston will draft Jeff Green of Georgetown for the Sonics.

Green was the Big East player of the year.

Yi Jianlian goes to Milwaukee 6th.

He is the first foreign player chosen. As we said before he doesn’t want to be there so this will be interesting. I don’t know why he doesn’t want to go Milwaukee what with the hot chicks, the great weather and all the PBR you can drink.

Minnesota takes Corey Brewer with the 7th pick.

Dickie V. thinks Brewer needs to improve his shooting range. And that Seattle out foxed Boston.

Now the question is with two of the three Gators gone, how far will Noah fall in the draft? Are we looking at the NBA’s version of Brady Quinn? I’ve seen Noah taken anywhere from 6-14.

Charlotte is reportedly trying to deal the 8th pick. I think Jordan wants to pay off his gambling debts so he’ll be looking for cash. Having failed to make a deal Jordan goes to his alma mater for Brandan Wright at number 8, he joins fellow Heels Sean May and Raymond Felton.

Bilas feels it’s a steal because he had him ranked as the fourth best in the draft. SAS knows that Brandon Wright can play. I see now why they pay him dearly for his NBA commentary. He is only the second freshman to leave UNC early.

Bulls fans have a “Thanks Isiah” sign because they are the only playoff team in the lottery because of last year’s trade of Eddie Curry. And with the 9th pick Chicago takes Joakim Noah. Here comes the freak show, watch out David. He looks like he got his hair styled by Gene Simmons. All he needs is the make up and he would like he belongs on the cover of the old “Dressed to Kill” album. His dad is former tennis player turned recording artist Yannick Noah and his mom is a former Swedish model. Glad to see he got dad’s good looks. Best part of this is they keep showing the UF co-eds.

Hey thanks for the shampoo tip Stu, I really don’t give a rats ass what Joakim runs through the birds nest he calls hair.

Spencer Hawes was taken 10th by Sacramento

I don’t realize he was white.

Oh jeez SAS doesn’t like the pick of Noah by Chicago because he is a high-energy guy and they have a bunch of high energy guys already. He feels they needed a low post player and even though Paxson knows what he’s doing SAS doesn’t think it matches well.

It’s A Great Day To Play “Brass Bonanza”

Former Hartford Whaler first round draft pick (and yes ESPN.com, he was a Hartford draft pick not a Carolina Hurricane draft pick) Ron Francis will be inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame. Joining him will be former Edmonton Oiler and New York Ranger Mark Messier, former Calgary Flames and St. Louis Blues back liner Al MacInnis and former Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils defenseman Scott Stevens.

All four players were inducted on the first ballot and will go into the Hall on November 10th.

Francis becomes the first player to play predominantly for the Hartford Whalers to make the Hall. He was their first round pick in 1981 out of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Francis played the third most games in NHL history only behind Gordie Howe and Mark Messier.

All Whaler fans remember March 4, 1991. It was the day that Francis was part of a six-player trade along with Ulf Samuelsson to Pittsburgh. It would become known as the day the Whalers died. The franchise never recovered from Eddie Johnston’s trade of the franchise player and a few short years later they would leave for Carolina and become the Hurricanes.

Francis would go on to win two Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh playing along side the great Mario Lemieux.

NASCAR Invades Red Sox Nation

Roush Fenway Racing announced today that Carl Edwards will be driving the No. 99 Lumber Liquidators/Red Sox Ford Fusion this Sunday in the Lenox Industrial Tools 300 at New Hampshire International Raceway in Loudon, NH. Lumber Liquidators and Gillette will be the primary sponsors this weekend of the No. 99 this weekend.

Edwards is very happy about the deal.

“I’m really proud to have Lumber Liquidators and Gillette on board as the primary sponsors of the No. 99 Ford at Loudon. Both organizations have deep ties in the New England area and it is truly an honor to represent a team like the Boston Red Sox that has so much respect and history. There is an obvious cross-over between the NASCAR fan base and Red Sox fans and I’m excited that Lumber Liquidators and Gillette have chosen me to represent them at New Hampshire International Speedway.”

Owner Jack Roush shared Edwards’ sentiments.

“We are excited to have Lumber Liquidators and Gillette sponsoring the No. 99 Ford Fusion and using the opportunity to promote their affiliation with the Boston Red Sox. It is our intention to be New England’s NASCAR team. We hope Red Sox fans watching the races in Loudon will support us with the same intensity as they do when watching the Red Sox”.

Tomorrow night at the ballpark will Roush Fenway Racing Day at Fenway Park presented by Gillette. There will be a NASCAR theme and exhibits throughout Fenway. All of the Roush Fenway stable of drivers will be honored before the game with the Texas Rangers. Carl Edwards and his car will also be on display outside Remdawg’s before the game as well.

It’s only matter of time before Jim Billy Bob Cooter will be wearing a Red Sox hat.
