Paw Prints – UCONN Football & Men’s Basketball

UCONN’s 39-10 win over Toledo in the 2004 Motor City Bowl is being investigated over allegations of point-shaving by the Mudhen’s football team. Scooter McDougle, a running back, is the primary focus of the fed’s investigation. Also former Mudhen’s QB, Bruce Gradkowski, is a name of interest in the investigation. The investigation is focused on allegations of point-shaving in two other Toledo football games as well as some games by the basketball team.

NBC 30 has a feature on their website called “Meet the Huskies”.

The UCONN men’s basketball team took individual and team pictures yesterday. The team will be sporting new uni’s this season.

Red Sox vs Yankees- Bloody Sock vs Vera Wang

In just a little bit, Curt Schilling will make his first important start at Yankee Stadium since the bloody sock game in 2004. Chien-Mien Wang will start for the Yankees as they look to sweep the Red Sox and cut the lead to 5 in the AL East. The Sox will be without the services of one Manny Ramirez, as he is sidelined indefinitely with a strained oblique. This is a pivotal game for the Red Sox who have lost momentum since last weekend’s shellacking of the White Sox. The Sox offense has seemed to have disappeared and their starting pitching hasn’t been that great. They need a win so that the Yankees don’t think they have a chance of actually winning the division.

Here a look at the lineups for today’s 1:05 PM start.

Tidbits From the College Gridiron – Rule Changes

It’s that time people. College football gets underway tonight at 7 pm ET at various venues around the country. As you’re watching these games, you will notice a few things different from last season as far as some rules go.

The first thing that the NCAA changed was where teams kicked the ball off from. In previous years, college kickers were kicking off from their own 35-yard line. Now, they will be kicking from their 30-yard line like they do in the NFL. The reason being the NCAA wanted to create a little excitement rather than watching kickers boom the ball through the end zone. The one thing to watch for is kick returners being injured. The more kickoffs in play, the bigger the likelihood of an injury.

Remember that awful rule of last year where the clock started right away on kickoffs and then again as soon the ball was set after kickoffs or change of possessions. The NCAA threw that rule out the door. The reason being there was an average of 14 less plays a game in 2006 from 2005. Plus, it created a mess at times. If you had the lead at the end of the game, you could easily milk the clock or if teams were trailing, you would see a full dead-on sprint right after the ball was set. Now the clock will start when the receiving team gets the ball on kickoffs and then again when the quarterback snaps the ball.

The times on the playclock were altered a little bit as far as certain situations go. Coming out of a TV timeout, teams will have 15 seconds to snap the ball rather than the usual 25 seconds. The play clock on kickoffs will start as soon as the kicker is handed the ball.

And there is one final rule change. Charged timeouts will now only be 30 secs while TV timeouts will remain the same at 1 minute. Although it does seem like TV timeouts can last like 10 minutes. If you are at a game and you see the guy dressed in red on the field, it’s a television timeout.

I like the changes, especially the starting of the clock. It was ridiculous to see how much time was wasted during a game. As a fan, I want to see as much action as I could get. Also the kickoff rule is an interesting one as you will see how good many special teams are or aren’t. This may also change the recruiting a little as you are going to want the best return guys to help get your team in good field position.

It’s going to be a fun entertaining season of college football this season.

Red Sox/Yankees News & Notes – 8/30

Beckett and Clemens - Boston Globe

To sum up last night’s game between the Red Sox and Yankees is pretty easy.

  • Red Sox, Beckett – Not good
  • Yankees, Clemens – Good

The Yankees pounded out 14 hits last night and Johnny Demon again was clutch against his former mates as the Yanks beat the Sox again. Beckett ran into some trouble early and that’s what cost the Sox the game. He was clearly not the pitcher we’ve seen all year while Clemens looked like the Clemens of Red Sox lore as he threw 5 1/3 no hit innings last night. Big Papi broke up the no-no with a home run but that’s all they could scrape together off of Clemens. They were unable to take advantage of the walks issued by Clemens. They did get two runs off of Kyle Farnsworth but then old nemesis Mariano Rivera came in and finished them off. Big Schill starts this afternoon trying to push the lead back to 7 games but before he does, let’s take a look at some of the headlines from the Boston area and New York scribes.

Red Sox vs Yankees- Beckett vs His Idol

Josh Beckett and Roger Clemens

When Josh Beckett was just a young pup growing up in Texas, his idol was Roger Clemens. When Clemens went to the Astros in the National League, there would be a chance that Beckett would face his idol when he pitched for the Marlins. Beckett’s dream matchup never materialized until tonight with both of them in the American League. What makes Beckett like his idol, Clemens? His heart. Both of them wear their emotions on their sleeves and have “heart” when they take the mound. We’ve all seen how passionate Clemens was back in his days in Boston and then those other cities (It is Dan Duquette’s fault that Clemens didn’t stay with the Sox). And we have most definitely seen how much passion Josh exhilarates on the mound. Tonight’s game should be one of the best to watch as you see two competitors face off. Idol vs idolizer.

Here’s a look at tonight’s lineups courtesy of Nick Cafardo from the Boston Globe.

Red Sox
1. Julio Lugo, SS
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH

-Julio Lugo, 1 for 9 (.111), 2B
-J.D. Drew, 0 for 2, BB
-Alex Cora, 0 for 3
-Bobby Kielty, 0 for 5, BB
-Clemens is 8-5 with a 3.85 E.R.A. in 19 regular-season starts against Boston. He last faced them during in Game 7 of the 2003 American League Championship Series, when he picked up a no decision while giving up four runs (three earned) in three innings pitched. We all know how that one ended.
