Ok so it’s a joke. But still a pretty funny one.

UConn Women Hit 100 In Romp

The UConn women played their first national television game this season and showed the rest of the country why they are the #1 team in the land as they doubled up the Purdue Boilermakers 100-50 at Mackey Arena on Sunday afternoon. It was the worst loss for the Boilermakers in their history.

Tina Charles going up for 2 - AP PhotoTina Charles led 5 Huskies in double figures as she had her 6th double-double of the season with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Brittany Hunter had a productive 11 minutes as she put up 15 points and 7 rebounds. Meghan Gardler added a career-high 14 points while Renee Montgomery added 13 points. Maya Moore rounded out the Huskies in double digits as she scored 13 points and added 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks to the cause.

Danielle Campbell led the Boilermakers (6-8) with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Lakisha Freeman scored 10 points and pulled down 5 boards as well. FahKara Malone added 9 points for Purdue in the losing effort.

This game was over as soon as Moore started the game with a 3-pointer for the Huskies (13-0) and they turned that into an 11-0 run. Purdue finally got on the board with 16 minutes left in the first half when Campell hit two free throws. UConn went on another 8-0 run before Purdue scored 2 more points on free throws. UConn went on another 11-0 run to go up 29-4 before the Boilermakers made their first basket of the game with 9:06 remaining in the half after missing their first 13 shots. The Huskies would go into the break with a 53-14 lead.

It was more of the same in the second half as Geno Auriemma was able to give his starters a break and let the reserves play. Mel Thomas and Jacquie Fernandes were the only Huskies not to score in the game.

UConn will return home on Wednesday night to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers in a Big East game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM and the game will be shown locally on CPTV.

Picking Up The Blitz Ver 2.1

Steve's new man crush

After Tom Brady, Jonathan Papelbon, Josh Beckett and Kevin Garnett, Glenn “Big Baby” Davis is my new man crush. No one ever accused Danny Ainge of not being a fine evaluator of college talent. This kid looks like he has something to prove and last night in Detroit, when it mattered most, he made Rasheed Wallace look like a high schooler in the paint.

The UConn Huskies have lost two players off the roster this past season as backup QB Dennis Brown and backup tight end Derek Rich have decided to transfer from the program. Brown has decided to transfer to Norfolk State and it’s unknown where Rich will transfer to.

The Huskies will also lose 11 seniors from this year’s roster as well.

UConn did make use of one of the scholarships already as they received a commitment from a quarterback, Casey Turner, from Chesapeake, VA. Turner may enroll for the spring semester and would be eligible to participate in spring practices if he chooses to enroll early. Turner has enough credits already to graduate from high school.

If he did participate in spring practices, he would be competing with incumbent starter Tyler Lorenzen, Notre Dame transfer Zach Fraser and redshirt freshman Cody Endres for the starting QB1 job.

Notre Dame Holds Off UConn

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish were able to hold off a strong second half comeback by the UConn Huskies as they defeated them 73-67 behind Kyle McAlarney’s career-high 32 points at the Joyce Center on Saturday night. The win was Notre Dame’s 30th straight at the Joyce Center, which is good for third longest in the NCAA.

Coach Calhoun is not pleased - AP PhotoNotre Dame (12-2, 2-0) also got double-doubles from Rob Kurz and Luke Harangody. Both of them each had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Harangody was only 5-of-23 from the floor. Tory Jackson added 7 rebounds and 11 assists for the Fighting Irish.

UConn (10-3, 1-1) was led by Jeff Adrien who had a double-double of his own. He finished the game with 16 points and 11 rebounds. A.J. Price and Jerome Dyson, who were a combined 7-of-23 from the floor, both finished with 13 points. Hasheem Thabeet nearly missed a triple-double as he finished the game with 8 points, 9 rebounds and a career-high tying 10 blocked shots.

Notre Dame started out the first half on a 29-10 run in the first 9 minutes of the game behind four 3-pointers by McAlarney. Notre Dame pushed the lead to 21 points at one point in the first half. UConn was able to cut the lead to 15 points at the half, going into the locker room trailing 47-32.

The first part of the second half was the polar opposite of the first half. UConn came out firing on all cylinders and kept cutting down the Irish lead. On the strength of an 8-0 run, the Huskies took their first lead of the game at 58-57 with just over 6 minutes to go in the game. It was a shortlived lead though as the Irish got a tip-in and a 3-pointer from Kurz to pull ahead by 3 points. McAlarney stuck the dagger in the Huskies as he hit his sixth 3-pointer of the night.

Unfortunately for the Huskies, their poor first half was too much to overcome in the game. The Huskies return to the friendly confines of Gampel Pavilion on Tuesday night as they will host the St. John’s Red Storm at 7 PM. The game will be covered locally in Connecticut on MyTV9.

Celtics Drop Pistons

Celtics coach Doc Rivers does some coaching - AP PhotoGlenn “Big Baby” Davis came up large scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter alone on 6 for 6 from the field and 4 of 5 from the line as he took over the final two and half minutes as the Boston Celtics beat the Detroit Pistons 92-85 Saturday night in the Palace at Auburn Hills in Detroit.

Davis, who had 20 points in all, got 7 of those 16 points in the final two minutes as he helped Boston end Detroit’s 11-game win streak while Boston won it’s 9th in a row since a home loss to these very Pistons. Davis was one of four Celtics in double figures as Paul Pierce had 19 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists, Kevin Garnett put up 15 and Tony Allen had 10.

Detroit was led by former UConn star Richard Hamilton who had 18 points and 8 assists, Chauncey Billups had 17 points and 8 assists and Rasheed Wallace chipped in 16 points and 8 rebounds.

For the first time since 1981, two NBA teams entered a game on January 5 with a combined 54 wins. They were also the first two teams since 2000, to face each other with each riding at least an eight-game winning streak.

The Celtics improved to 29-3 and are off until Wednesday when they host the Charlotte Bobcats.

Tom Brady Is Your NFL MVP

Tom Fuckin Brady - Reuters photoTom Brady has another trophy to add to his mantel as today he was named the MVP of the NFL. Brady was a nearly unanimous choice for Associated Press NFL MVP as he garnered a whopping 49 of the 50 votes. Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre got the other vote.

Brady helped the Patriots to a 16-0 record, something that hadn’t been done in the regular season since the 1972 Miami Dolphins went 14-0 and finished that season with a Super Bowl Trophy. Nothing short of his 4th Super Bowl Trophy will be good enough for Brady and the Pats though.

Brady was a part of New England’s record setting offense as he threw 50 touchdown passes and led them to an NFL record 589 points in a season. 23 of those 50 touchdown passes went to Randy Moss, which broke Jerry Rice’s single season record of 22. As a team the Patriots scored 75 touchdowns which was also an NFL record.

This what Mike Vrabel had to say about TFB winning the MVP:

“He’s our MVP. I think we’ve known that for quite some time. “I think his work ethic day in and day out (is most impressive). We get to practice against him so I think that makes us better. I think it makes us a better defense. He puts a lot of time into it. It’s important to him. Going out there every week and then trying to play his absolute best is a priority for him.”

Brady becomes the first Patriot to ever win the award.

It shouldn’t be long before the haters come out and say he cheated too and isn’t deserving of the award. I’d like to see you lead an NFL team to a perfect 16-0 record during a long and grinding regular season and help the Patriots to the records that he and the TEAM put up.

Red Sox News & Notes – 1/5

Red Sox News & Notes @ SOX & Dawgs

Clay Buchholz, Devern Hansack, Michael Bowden, Hunter Jones, Justin Masterson, Dustin Richardson, Dusty Brown, Aaron Bates, Jed Lowrie, Bubby Bell, Chris Carter and Jonathan Van Every are all in town for the annual Boston Red Sox rookie development program.

“Last January, Ellsbury was at our rookie development program, so he was hearing from our trainers and our coaching staff and our manager and me and [catcher] Jason Varitek and [pitcher] Curt Schilling about the expectations of playing winning baseball in Boston and trying to hammer those lessons home,” Epstein said during the 2007 World Series. “He’s obviously taken those right to the field and then some. To be the organization we want to be, we have to develop players who can adjust quickly and thrive in Boston. Otherwise, we’re not going to be as effective.”

The players will be busy from Sunday to January 18th working on strength and conditioning as well as attending seminars about life in Major League Baseball. The speakers include Larry Lucchino, Theo Epstein, Craig Shipley, Terry Francona, John Farrell, Dave Magadan, Dustin Pedroia former Sox lefty Bruce Hurst, UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun and ESPN reporter Peter Gammons. Quite an experienced crew to say the least.

Something I missed in the news & notes yesterday was something that I saw over at the Bradford Files, Rob Bradford’s blog over at the Boston Herald.

Baseball America announced in an online chat today that the Red Sox’ farm system has been ranked second-best in all of baseball. It is the highest finish for the organization since the current regime took over. In 2002 the Red Sox placed 28th, ‘03: 27th, ‘04: 23rd; ‘05: 21th; ‘06: 8th; ‘07: 9th.

This is the reason why the Red Sox could afford to lose players like Justin Masterson and Jed Lowrie in a Johan Santana deal. In years past, the Red Sox would trade away the one or two top prospects they have. Now they have one of the best minor league systems thanks to Theo and his crew.

Baseball America also released it’s Top 10 Boston Red Sox prospects and Clay Buchholz and Jacoby Ellsbury headline the list. The top 10 is as follows:

1. Clay Buchholz, rhp
2. Jacoby Ellsbury, of
3. Lars Anderson, 1b
4. Justin Masterson, rhp
5. Jed Lowrie, ss
6. Ryan Kalish, of
7. Michael Bowden, rhp
8. Nick Hagadone, lhp
9. Oscar Tejeda, ss
10. Josh Reddick, of

A full look of Baseball America’s Red Sox rankings will be listed after the jump.
