In The Red Zone – Brady Expected To Play

ITRZ

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick expects NFL MVP Tom Brady to be ready to play on Sunday in the season opener against Kansas City.

Belichick made his comments during his Wednesday conference call with the media in Kansas City. Brady has been saying all along that regardless of not playing in the preseason he’d be ready to go on Week 1.

Brady’s father, Tom Sr., said in an interview that his son was “chomping at the bit” to play. He also added that he knew nothing of the report that his son had a broken bone in the top of his right foot that was revealed in an August MRI. He said that as far he knew was what Tom had told him and that there was some stress on the foot but he never told him anything different nor did he ask.

The younger Brady sat out all four preseason games with a reported foot injury.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 9/4

It’s always a nice thing to kick off your morning with a musical montage from the fine musical montage makers at NESN. This one is from before and after yesterday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.

After trailing yesterday 4-0, the Boston Red Sox did what we normally expect them to do and come back to win. One of the characteristics of this team is that they never give up no matter what the deficit. The comeback win was huge in the sense that the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays last night, narrowing the Red Sox deficit to 3 in the AL East. The Minnesota Twins lost last night pushing the lead for the Red Sox in the wild card to 5 games.

It was a good homestand for the Red Sox as they went 5-1. Contributions came from everyone on the team but the one person who is leading the team right now is Dustin Pedroia. With the injuries to J.D. Drew and Mike Lowell to go along with Kevin Youkilis’ bad back, Pedroia has stepped up his game to even higher level than he plays at all season. Seriously, how many second baseman that are 5 foot nothing do you see batting cleanup.

Pedroia is in the midst of a 8-game hitting streak right now where he’s batting .618. Plus he’s been solid defensively behind the Red Sox pitching staff. You can definitely not count him out of the MVP talk.

Speaking of Pedroia, he said Jerry Remy “stunk” when he played.

Mark Kotsay did a great job playing first base yesterday.

Baltimore reliever Jim Johnson will undergo an MRI on his sore shoulder.

The Red Sox are getting healthy at the right time.

Daisuke Matsuzaka wasn’t at his best yesterday but was happy the team won.

“My pitching was one thing but right now we need to win games, so to pull it off the way we did today, after falling behind, I can’t ask for more than that,” said Matsuzaka, who failed to surpass Hideo Nomo for the most wins in a single season by a Japanese-born pitcher. “I felt my condition was good, so I hoped for a better result but I guess baseball isn’t that easy. Today, we got the win and I just want to thank the guys on the field.”

It was a good year for the Red Sox farm system.

For more slices of Boston Red Sox goodness, head over to the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Hartford Courant and Providence Journal websites.

And if you must see what the enemy papers are saying you can check out the Baltimore Sun and Washington Post websites.

The Next Great Sports Blogger My Ass

weei contest

As many of you know WEEI re-launched its website in an attempt to be a local version of ESPN.com or Yahoo! Sports and other national sites. As part of this re-launch they have hired Rob Bradford, Mike Felger, Will Leitch and others to write articles and blog entries for weei.com. Now they want to add two more people, locals to blog about the Boston sports scene.

The “winners” will write 5 pieces a week and get paid to do it for one year in the “Next Great Sports Blogger” contest sponsored by TD BankNorth.

I wanted to let you know that “I choose not to run” and the reasons for my decision not to enter the contest.

First off I really don’t think the average everyday blogger, the true Boston sports fan who writes his or her opinions stands a snowballs chance in hell. Even though the rules prevent someone who has been paid to write for a sports site in the past it doesn’t prevent someone with a degree, fresh out of college with a writing background from entering. Someone with that experience of having been edited and molded in a college setting will be leaps and bounds above the average fan. Also it doesn’t prevent some of the comedians in waiting, guys and gals who are looking for a platform to break their career, from getting involved. Someone with comedy writing experience is in the same book as the previously mentioned possible candidates.

In the Boston blog market someone out there has the chance to be the next “Fitzy” (Nick Stevens) or the guys who do the “Red Socks Diaries” or if you listen to WEEI the Francona guy or the Bob Kraft guy those aren’t sports radio callers who are funny, they’re actual comedians looking to get noticed.  That is the type of person who will win and while I don’t begrudge them the chance at launching a career I don’t think that is the intent of the contest.

The playing field will be far from level. It will look like the opening auditions of “American Idol” with the wannabe’s against the more polished writers. It can and will be ugly.

But my biggest problem lies with the judges of the event. While I highly respect Rob Bradford, the weei.com editior, and Michael Holley, who has written three books including “Patriot Reign” and was a sports writer for the Boston Globe prior to coming to WEEI, I just can not and will not allow myself to be judged by the likes of Gerry Callahan, Glenn Ordway and Mike Felger.

Callahan and Ordway are the biggest hypocrites of the bunch as they have done nothing but knock blogs and the people who write for them. Calling them many things but constantly referring to a lack of professionalism and accountability.  They have no clue what a blog is, what it does, what its purpose is or how it relates to the topics it covers.  Now these two assholes will be judging the very people they put down and mock openly on the air. Felger is a whole separate entity, he is just a pompous ass who is so full of himself as he constantly carries his big stick trying to stir the pot to see what shit rises to the top.  He is why people loathe the media and the Boston Sports Media specifically.  Just watch him on Comcast SportsNet and you can feel the smugness ooze through your television screen and onto you making you feel dirtier than if you had just watched a Mexican Donkey Show

I just can’t bring myself to be judged by this trio. And neither should you.

Red Sox Walk-Off With 5-4 Win

Alex Cora scores the winning run on Jim Miller's throwing error.

Jim Miller’s throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Jacoby Ellsbury allowed Alex Cora to score from second base to give the Boston Red Sox a 5-4 walk-off win to give them a 3-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles in front of a MLB record tying 455th consecutive sellout at Fenway Park.

Cora led off the bottom of the 9th with a single and went to second on a Coco Crisp bunt single. With no outs, Ellsbury laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line that Miller threw past Orioles third baseman Aubrey Huff allowing Cora to score the winning run.

Dice-K wasn't at his best today.

Dice-K wasn't at his best today.

Daisuke Matsuzaka started for the Red Sox today and wasn’t at his best. He went 6 innings allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits and walks while striking out 7. He had only two walks in his last 3 games prior to today’s start. Javier Lopez allowed a hit in an inning of work and Justin Masterson picked up the win by pitching two perfect innings striking out 2 along the way.

Guess who led the Red Sox offense once again? If you said Dustin Pedroia you would be correct. Pedroia went 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Alex Cora had 3 hits as well while Coco Crisp had 2 hits and an RBI. Mark Kotsay had the only other hit for the local nine and it was a 2-run triple to get them back into the game.

Brian Roberts led off the game with a double and after a Jay Payton fly out, came into score when Coco dropped a Nick Markakis fly ball at the wall to make it 1-0 O’s.
