Report: Red Sox In Lead For Teixeira

Could they be teammates in '09?
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that one of the GM’s involved in the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes said the Boston Red Sox were in the lead to sign him.
“I think they’re in the lead and ahead of where everyone else is right now,” he said. “I’m not sure who’s bidding against them at this point.”
Asked whether he thought the talks would end soon, the GM said, “You just never know where Scott Boras and the Red Sox are involved.”
Let’s see here. The Yankees, Red Sox, Orioles, Nationals and Angels are the teams involved in the talks. It’s very unlikely that Theo Epstein and Brian Cashman (Yanks GM) said that. So that it narrows it down to Tony Reagins (Angels GM), Andy McPhail (Orioles GM) or Jim Bowden (Nationals GM).
My money is on Reagins saying that.

Paw Prints – The Daily Roundup – 12/17

The big news yesterday for the UConn Huskies was that Donald Brown was named a second team AP All-American. It’s the first time in the Huskies FBS era that a player has been named to the AP team. Someone who helped Brown get those yards, Moe Petrus, was also honored as he was named to the Sporting News All-Freshman college football team.
Here are some reasons to attend the International Bowl on January 3, 2009.
The UConn women are in Cancun and John Altavilla of the Hartford Courant let’s us know he got there okay. He also gives a brief of Mel Thomas’ book.
Mel Thomas’ book tour kicks off tomorrow at the Enfield Senior Center.
The other Huskies, Washington, are ready to kickoff the Caribbean Classic against UConn.
Gavin Keefe of the New London Day breaks down the UConn men’s schedule.
The UConn men’s team helped out at the annual Jim Calhoun Food Drive in Hartford yesterday.
Jim Calhoun had given his team the day off yesterday but he wasn’t particularly happy with the performance on Monday night which meant they practiced yesterday.
Hasheem Thabeet, Jeff Adrien and Kemba Walker missed most or all of the practice yesterday.
Jim Calhoun wants to see his defense tighten up.
Jason Blake Spin-O-Rama
Jeff Jason Blake: I may not follow hockey too much anymore ever since the Hartford Whalers left town but you can’t say enough about this goal by Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman forward Jason Blake during a shootout against the New Jersey Devils.
The Leafs would win the shootout and the game 3-2.
Will The Red Sox Go 10 Years On Teixeira?

Could he get 10 years?
The answer to that question is probably not according to an email from Boston Red Sox owner John Henry to the Boston Herald’s Sean McAdam.
“Yes,” Henry responded in an e-mail. “The Red Sox effectively had a 10-year deal with a player determined not to live up to his contract. A lot can change over 10 years, for both sides.”
With all of the known offers at 8 years right now, it’s still possible that someone could jump in with a 10 year offer. Henry did note that “there are exceptions to every rule” which I take to mean they could quite conceivably go 10 years for Teixeira but only if need be.
We all know Scott Boras will try to get the best deal possible for his client. Let’s just hope the best deal is from the Red Sox and that’s where Teixeira decides to play for the forseeable future.

Moe Petrus Named To 2008 Sporting News All-Freshman Team
Here’s a press release from the UConn Huskies athletic department about Moe Petrus being named to the Sporting News 2008 All-Freshman college football team.
STORRS, Conn. (December 16, 2008) — University of Connecticut redshirt freshman offensive guard Moe Petrus (St. Laurent, Que.) was named to the Sporting News 2008 All-Freshmen college football team on Tuesday.
Petrus started all 12 games of the regular season games for the Huskies at left guard. He was part of an offensive line that allowed junior running back Donald Brown (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) to lead the country in rushing. UConn was ranked 20th in the country in rushing yards per game and second in the BIG EAST at 204.58 yards per game.
A product of Vanier Prep, he was a 2006 Canadian All-Star and helped Vanier to the Cegep Championship in 2006 with a 12-1 record.
