As The Teixeira Turns – 12/19 [Updated]

As The Teixeira Turns

Now that the whole Mark Teixeira free agency has become a soap opera, it’s time to rename it all to “As The Teixeira Turns.”

Last night came the stunning developments that the Boston Red Sox were pulling out of the negotiations with Mark Teixeira.

“We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor.”

While I feel that this is the end for the Red Sox in the Teixeira chase, others don’t share my feelings:

A Red Sox Fan in Pinstripe Territory: Considering the source, though, this could be a prank email from anybody. If it is true, we’ll see soon why they decided to just walk away. Could be just a threat to mess with that pig Boras.

Around the Bases: While Henry’s words make it seem like Boston is out of it, I wouldn’t count them out until Teixeira’s putting his signature on a contract elsewhere.

Fenway West: This does not necessarily mean the Sox are done in the case that Boras was bluffing about other offers and will have to come back to the Red Sox with hat in hand but that is an unlikely senario.

The Joy of Sox: Is Henry bluffing? Has Teixeira eliminated Boston from his possible places of employment? Or is this a straight statement of the Red Sox removing themselves from the bidding and moving on?

Red Sox Monster: If true, that’s certainly unfortunate for the Red Sox organization. But is it true?

SOX1FAN: Is it posturing for Boras, or does it mean the Red Sox are really moving on? Time will tell…

Surviving Grady: So the Sox winkwink are apparently dropping out of the Mark Teixeira talks winkwink because the money is just getting too winkwinkwink ridiculous.

The Bottom Line: Personally, I think Henry and Co. made their offer and are choosing to play hard ball now. This is the final hand in the poker game. If Boras does have a $200 million deal from the Angels, Nats or Yankees, then Teixeira will not be in Boston… but I don’t think he does and I think Boras’ statement was really targeted at the other teams involved.

Yanks Fan vs Sox Fan: As I’ve said in the comments, I’m pretty convinced this is a case of Henry calling a Boras bluff.

Some thoughts from the national and Boston media after the jump.

Aliens Invade The NFL Network

I was watching the postgame show on the NFL Network last night when all of the sudden things turned a little bit strange.

Like them, I was laughing hysterically.

I’ve been waiting for this to be posted somewhere on the internet so a big thanks to YouTube user DCFanatic8 for posting the video.

3rd Annual SOX & Dawgs College Bowl Pick’em Contest Reminder

3rd Annual SOX & Dawgs College Bowl Pick'em Contest

With all of the college bowl games being announced, it’s time for the third annual SOX & Dawgs Bowl Pick’em Contest. The past two seasons have been won by mother, Sue Bethune. Can she make it 3 straight?

If she does win her third straight, I have decided that the contest will be renamed to the Sue Bethune College Football Bowl Game Pick’em Contest presented by SOX & Dawgs.

So what’s at stake here? Well for one, it’s a chance to knock my mother off of the throne. Secondly, it’s a chance to win a guest post or two here at SOX & Dawgs.

The rules for the contest are simple. Pick who you think will win without spreads. I’ve previously used spreads in the past but have decided to make it a straight pick’em this year. The winner of this contest will get to write a post here on the site. In case of a tie, the total points from the BCS Championship game will be used. When making your picks you can just write the team you want. And don’t forget to put in your total points in the BCS Championship game.

Entries will be accepted through December 21st. So get in early so you don’t miss out on any games.

Good luck to everyone!!!

GAMES START TOMORROW SO BE SURE TO GET YOUR ENTRY IN BEFORE THE DEADLINE.

Paw Prints – The Daily Roundup – 12/19

Paw Prints The Daily Roundup

It’s game day once again for the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team as they are coming off a 109-51 drubbing of the Washington Huskies in their first game of the Caribbean Classic in Cancun. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM and the game will be broadcast locally here in Connecticut on CPTV.

It could get ugly again tonight for the Huskies as Northern Colorado lost by 43 points to Florida State last night.

Florida State has agreed to a 2-year series that will start with the UConn women’s team next year in Tallahassee.

Former Husky Mel Thomas’ book was a hit with fans during stops in Enfield and Waterford yesterday. She is scheduled to be in East Haven, CT tonight but it remains unclear if she’ll cancel due to the impending snow storm here in Connecticut. If it’s not cancelled, I will most likely be in attendance and have pictures for you in the morning.

Heather Buck is ready to take advantage of being a medical redshirt.

John Altavilla of the Hartford Courant has some extras from yesterday’s UConn women’s game. He also says that mono isn’t the black plague.

Kalana Greene can only tolerate New England weather to a certain point.

The UConn women will host the WBCA Classic next year.

UConn football offensive coordinator Rob Ambrose is drawing interest from his alma mater Towson State to be their new head coach.

Cody Brown was ranked the second best defensive lineman by Brian Bennett of ESPN.com.

Randy Edsall deserves our trust while he continues to build the UConn football program.

Rob Lunn says Donald Brown finally got the recognition he deserves over at Thoughts From a Fat White Guy.

David Gillett has a video preview of the UConn men’s game against Gonzaga from ESPN.

Mike Anthony of the Hartford Courant has some notes about tomorrow’s game against Gonzaga.

Red Sox Out Of The Bidding For Teixeira?

Boston Red SoxAs we learned earlier, Boston Red Sox owner John Henry, President/CEO Larry Lucchino and GM Theo Epstein had flown to Texas to meet with Scott Boras and presumably Mark Teixeira to talk about finalizing a deal.

Now according to Henry in an email to various Boston media members, the Red Sox are out of the hunt for the services of Teixeira.

“We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor.”

This is a huge turn of events. Just hours earlier, it’s thought that Teixeira would be a member of the Red Sox. Now it’s looking like he won’t be. Unbelievable. I highly doubt this is posturing by Henry. Remember he’s the one with the money. So if he says the Red Sox are out of it, they probably are.

All I can say is that I’m completely stunned by the turn of events.

UPDATE – 12/19, 1:20 AM: The Clubhouse Insider has an email from Boras regarding the events of  Thursday night.

“The Boston ownership was kind enough to request and travel to meet with Mark Teixeira. While it was a very positive meeting Mark was candid and advised he is in the process of making a decision and is now attempting to eliminate teams.”
