As we learned earlier, Boston Red Sox owner John Henry, President/CEO Larry Lucchino and GM Theo Epstein had flown to Texas to meet with Scott Boras and presumably Mark Teixeira to talk about finalizing a deal.
Now according to Henry in an email to various Boston media members, the Red Sox are out of the hunt for the services of Teixeira.
“We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor.”
This is a huge turn of events. Just hours earlier, it’s thought that Teixeira would be a member of the Red Sox. Now it’s looking like he won’t be. Unbelievable. I highly doubt this is posturing by Henry. Remember he’s the one with the money. So if he says the Red Sox are out of it, they probably are.
All I can say is that I’m completely stunned by the turn of events.
UPDATE – 12/19, 1:20 AM: The Clubhouse Insider has an email from Boras regarding the events of Thursday night.
“The Boston ownership was kind enough to request and travel to meet with Mark Teixeira. While it was a very positive meeting Mark was candid and advised he is in the process of making a decision and is now attempting to eliminate teams.”
