It’s Official: Torre To Manage Dodgers

I am beginning to think that Peter Abraham of the Journal News is the hardest working man in the media. He’s been in the zone during these past few weeks.

Early this morning at 12:32 AM, Abraham reported that Joe Torre has accepted a 3 year $15 million deal from the Los Angeles Dodgers to become their next manager. It also seems as though Donnie Baseball (Don Mattingly), Larry Bowa and perhaps Lee Mazzilli will be joining Torre in Tinseltown.

An official announcement should come by Thursday. For those who don’t know, Mattingly’s son Preston plays in the Dodgers minor league system.

If you missed Torre on Letterman this week, you missed a witty Torre. Here is it for you after the jump.

Red Sox News & Notes – 10/31

He's one crazy ass mofo

It’s the Halloween edition of the Red Sox News & Notes on day 3 of the offseason. Curt Schilling, Eric Hinske, Matt Clement and Bobby Kielty all filed for free agency yesterday. Schilling explained in a post over at 38 Pitches that this is his first time facing free agency in his career and listed his teams he would have interest in after the Red Sox.

If you haven’t seen any of the videos from yesterday’s Rolling Rally, I have three of them that you can watch right here on Sox & Dawgs (Papelbon Dance 1, Papelbon Dance 2, Papelbon Dance 3). So after watching the three video, be sure to check out what the local scribes are writing in today’s Boston area papers as well as what Schilling has to say about free agency.

This is a car advertisement from Great Britain. When they finished filming the ad, the film editor noticed something moving along the side of the car, like a ghostly white mist. They found out that a person had been killed a year earlier in that exact same spot.

The ad was never put on TV because of the unexplained ghostly phenomenon. Watch the front end of the car as it clears the trees in the middle of the screen and you’ll see the white mist crossing in front of the car then following it along the road……Spooky!

Is it a ghost, or is it simply mist? You decide. If you listen to the ad, you’ll even hear the cameraman whispering in the background about it near the end of the commercial. A little creepy but pretty cool!

Tidbits From the College Gridiron – 10/30

SOX & Dawgs - Tidbits From the Gridiron

We interrupt your Boston Red Sox Championship coverage to bring you some college football news and a look at the polls.

The South Carolina Gamecocks football team will honor six students killed in an Ocean Isle Beach fire this past weekend before Saturday’s game. They will wear stickers on their helmets that say “Forever to thee”. A great gesture by Steve Spurrier and his players.

The US Department of Education says in a federal report that Michigan’s Big House is inaccessible for the disabled. The report states that the stadium doesn’t provide enough handicapped seats and also doesn’t offer the same choices in seating to the disabled. If Michigan doesn’t make changes, they could lose millions in financial aid.

LSU’s backup quarterback Ryan Perrilloux and backup linebacker Derrick Odom will miss their game this Saturday as they are suspended for taking part in a brawl at nightclub this past weekend. This is huge as they will face Alabama this weekend. LSU uses Perrilloux in a QB rotation in certain situations. That should make Nick Saban happy.

Florida State will be without their backup quarterback Xaiver Lee for their next two games. He was suspended for a violation of team rules in relation to his academic standing. He will miss the Seminoles big game against #2 Boston College this week and their next game against #11 Virginia Tech.

Schilling Among Four Sox To File For Free Agency

The first four Red Sox free agents

Curt Schilling, Eric Hinske, Bobby Kielty and Matt Clement were the first four Red Sox players to file for free agency today. The Red Sox still have more guys who are eligible to file for free agency. This includes Mike Lowell, Mike Timlin, Eric Gagné and Doug Mirabelli.

The Red Sox also hold the club options on the following players’ contracts: Tim Wakefield and Julian Tavarez.

If you don’t understand the free agency period, here it is in a nutshell. A player who does not have a contract for the following season can file for free agency for a period of up to 15 days after the World Series ends. The team the player plays for has exclusive negotiating rights for those 15 days. After that time is up, it’s open season. Other teams can be in contact with the free agents but they can’t talk contract or money.

Basically, the Red Sox will have first choice on their free agents. To me Curt Schilling is a big question mark. While he has proven himself over the years, he was clearly not the Schilling we all know and love. Would he accept a 1-year deal for less than the $13 million he made this season? The answer to that question lies with Schilling and also the Red Sox brain trust as to whether or not they want him back.

I’d like to see the Red Sox re-sign Kielty. To me, he proved himself in his brief time in Beantown. He would give the Red Sox a switch-hitting backup OF off the bench who can play the corners in the outfield.

As for Clement and Hinske, I think their time in Boston is done. For Hinske, Brandon Moss is working on his first base skills in the offseason and could fill the role Hinske had this season as the backup 1B and OF. Clement’s time in Boston was marred by injuries and would only asked back on a minor league deal, if at all.

Gear up folks, this is only the start.

The End of Another Memorable Season Is Upon Us

2007 World Series Champions

As baseball fans, we never want the season to end. We want baseball all the time. And if our team’s season comes to an end, we want it to be after they’ve won the World Series Championship. For the fans of Red Sox Nation (myself included), that’s what happened this year.

I want to congratulate the members of the Red Sox team, the players, the management, the ownership group and the fans. Everyone has made this season a memorable one for me and I am sure all of the Red Sox fans worldwide.

I’d also like to congratulate the Rockies for making the World Series. I have some ties with the Rockies organization dating back to 1995 when I worked for their Double-A affiliate in New Haven, CT. The Rockies had a magical run to get to the World Series, having won 21 of their last 22 games. Unfortunately, they ran into a juggernaut in the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. So my congratulations go out to Clint Hurdle, Todd Helton, Brian Fuentes, Marc Gustafson, Rick Matthews, and Mark Strittmatter as well as the rest of the organization there as well. Everyone in the Rockies organization and their fans should be walking around with their heads held high because the Rockies brought an entire city together with their magical run. The Rockies have a young core of talent with a good veteran mix and it wouldn’t surprise me to see them back on the big stage again next fall.

So as this baseball season comes to a close, by no means is it over. Now comes the time where the makeup of the 2008 teams happens. Guys are filing for free agency, some will play winter ball, and some might even be playing in the Hawaiian or Arizona Fall Leagues.

Does this mean the end of baseball coverage here at SOX & Dawgs? By no means will that happen. While the focus may shift a little bit as the UConn men’s and women’s basketball teams start their seasons and the football team continues it magical rise in the Big East and national ranks, we will be tracking all the free agents, especially the ones with the Red Sox. And oh yeah, Steve will keep you updated about the Patriots as well.

As I close out this post, enjoy this video montage from NESN.

Dog Shoots Hunter

dogs shooting guns = funnyJames Harris of Tama, Iowa was out hunting with a group of friends on the opening day of pheasant hunting season when the group shot a bird. Harris put his shotgun down on the ground and started to hop a fence when his own dog stepped on the gun firing one shot of about 120 pellets into Harris’ calf from about 3 feet away.

Harris had surgery and is doing fine and was listed in good condition today at Universitys Hospital in Iowa City.

No one else was hurt and the dog was uninjured.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has decided not to cite the dog for hunting without a license.
