Patriots Busy on Second Night of NFL Draft

It was another busy night for the New England Patriots on the second night of the draft. We saw them make a few trades again and oh yeah, they even made a few draft picks.

New England PatriotsThe Patriots first draft pick was supposed to be 12th pick in the 3rd round (44th overall) but a trade with the Oakland Raiders moved them up two spots to No. 42. With that picks, the Patriots selected tight end Rob Gronkowski out of Arizona.

In order to get Gronkowski, the Patriots gave up their 2nd round pick at No. 44 along with a 6th round pick (190th overall).

They were scheduled to make the 47th overall pick but once again they made another trade, sending the pick to the Arizona Cardinals. They got two picks back, a 2nd rounder (58th overall) and a 3rd rounder (89th overall).

When the Patriots went on the clock with the No. 53 pick, they didn’t make a trade. Instead they chose defensive end Jermaine Cunningham out of the University of Florida.

With the trade from the Cardinals giving them the No. 58 pick, when it came time to pick someone, they made yet another trade. This time they moved the No. 58 pick to the Houston Texans for the No. 62 pick (2nd round) and a 5th rounder (150th overall).

The Patriots used that No. 62 pick from the Texans to take linebacker Brandon Spikes from Florida.

When it came time for the Patriots to make their first selection in the third round, pick No. 89, they once again made a trade. This trade was with the Carolina Panthers. In return, the Pats got a second round pick in 2011.

They finally made a pick in the third round at No. 90, a pick acquired last night from the Dallas Cowboys, to take wide receiver Taylor Price out of Ohio University.

The Patriots will have eight picks on the final day of the draft (Rds 4-7).

Barring any trades, they’ll have one in the 4th round (No. 113), one in the 5th round (No. 150), one in the 6th round (No. 205) and five picks in the 7th round (Nos. 229, 231, 247, 248, 250).

The Patriots orginally had the 22nd pick but traded it to Denver for the 24th pick in the first round and a 4th round pick (113th overall). When it came time to pick at No. 24, the Patriots traded that pick and a 4th round pick (119th overall) to the Dallas Cowboys for the 27th pick in the first round and a 3rd round pick (90th overall).

The Broncos used the original Patriots pick to draft wide receiver Demaryius Thomas out of Georgia Tech while the Cowboys used the 24th pick to take wide receiver Dez Bryant out of Oklahoma State.

The Patriots will have four picks on the second night of the draft that begins at 6:00 p.m.

They’ll have the 11th pick in the 2nd round (44th overall), the 14th pick (47th overall) and the 21st pick (53rd overall). They’ll also have the 26th pick in the 3rd round (90th overall).

2010 New England Patriots Schedule Released

New Engalnd PatriotsThe NFL has released the 2010 schedules for all of the teams and we find our New England Patriots opening up their season at home against Chad Ochocinco and the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Patriots schedule features two games on Monday Night Fooball on ESPN on the road against the Miami Dolphins (10/4) and at home against the New York Jets (12/6). They also have two games on Sunday Night Football in NBC on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers (11/14) and at home against the Green Bay Packers (12/19).

There is the possibility that the Sunday night game against the Packers could be flexed out of primetime.

The Patriots will also make their fourth appearance on Thanksgiving Day (11/25) as they’ll take on the Detroit Lions. They lost the Dallas Cowboys 20-17 in 1984, 34-9 against the Lions in 2000 and they beat the Lions 20-12 in 2002.

One other wrinkle to the 2010 schedule is the fact that all games in the NFL will be Divisional games. The Patriots will host the Dolphins in the season finale at Gillette Stadium.

Patriots sign Crumpler

The New England Patriots started to fill a big hole in their offense today when they signed veteran free agent tight end Alge Crumpler.

The four time Pro Bowl slection has spent nine seasons in the league between Atlanta and Tennessee and he has 367 career receptions for 4691 yards and 37 TD’s. He is now the only tight end on the roster who has payed in a NFL game.

Kevin Faulk Agrees to One Year Deal

The New England Patriots have re-signed running back Kevin Faulk to a one year contract carries a $1 million salary with another $1 million in incentives and Faulk also gets a $1 million signing bonus to stay for his 12th season in Foxboro.

Faulk has been in Foxboro so long, he came in under former coach Pete Carroll, that he outdates everyone on the club except coach Dante Scarnecchia. He was New England’s second round pick out of LSU in the 1999 NFL Draft.

This is a good signing for the Pats, Faulk is a team guy, a smart player and someone who head coach Bill Belichick trusts with a game on the line.

Faulk never wanted to go anywhere either despite overtures from Washington and Philadelphia. He and his wife raised their family here and they don’t want to uproot them.

“It was always the Patriots,’’ said Faulk’s agent, Raymond Brothers. “I can’t even tell you it was close. It wasn’t.’’ “He always wanted to stay in New England — he said it publicly, I said it publicly,’’ Brothers said. “Any time he plays for the Patriots, he knows the standard is to win a Super Bowl. It’s not to make the playoffs or win more games than he did last year. Coach [Bill] Belichick is trying to win Super Bowls. “And [Faulk] has won three of them with them already, so he’d be in a place where he’d be in a position to do that again, in a place where he feels most comfortable and a place where he’s loved.’’

The Patriots still have three of their own free agents left on the market punter Chris Hanson, tight end Ben Watson and OLB/DE Derrick Burgess.

Patriots Free Agency Update

The New England Patriots re-signed free agent cornerback Leigh Bodden to a four year deal worth a reported $22 million with $10 millon guaranteed. Bodden decided to return after being courted by the Houston Texans.

The team also saw free agent defense lineman Jarvis Green join former Patriots assistant and current Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels as he signed a four year contract for $20 million with $7.5 million guaranteed.
