College Football Playoff Rankings Week 5 (Nov. 25)

The College Football Playoff Committee has released their rankings for the fifth week of the poll and we find the Alabama Crimson Tide on top for the second straight week.

cfplogoIn fact, there were no changes to the top seven of the poll.

The Crimson Tide are followed by the Oregon Ducks, Florida State Seminoles and Mississippi State Bulldogs in the top four. The TCU Horned Frogs remain on the outside looking in at No. 5.

As we’ve come to expect, there are no teams ranked from the American Athletic Conference.

American Athletic Conference Weekly Football Honors – Nov. 24

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly football honors for the 13th week of the college football season.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

american2Kenneth Farrow • Jr. • RB • Houston • Hurst, Texas

Farrow was the offensive catalyst behind Houston’s 38-28 win against Tulsa Saturday as he ran for 116 yards and tied the American Athletic Conference single-game record with four rushing touchdowns against the Golden Hurricane. Farrow scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the first quarter, broke a 45-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and scored the go-ahead TD on a 2-yard run with 3:06 left in the fourth quarter. Three of his four touchdowns gave Houston a lead. The performance was Farrow’s conference- leading fourth 100-yard game of the season.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jeff Luc • Sr. • LB • Cincinnati • Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Luc led a Cincinnati defense that limited UConn to 129 yards of offense and forced three turnovers in a 41-0 road win against the Huskies. He finished with 10 tackles to go with two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, helping Cincinnati register its first shutout since a 14-0 win against Miami (Ohio) Sept. 21, 2013. Luc is ranked second in the American Athletic Conference in tackles, averaging 10.6 stops per game, and has 106 tackles for the season.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Michael Easton • Sr. • LB • UCF • Winter Haven, Fla.

Playing in his final home game, Easton took the first kickoff return of his career 96 yards for a touchdown to help UCF to a 53-7 win against SMU. It was the 19th kickoff return for a touchdown in school history and the ninth-longest kickoff return in program history. Easton also added two special teams tackles for the Knights.

Rushed for a career-high 112 yards on 26 carries off the bench in a 53-7 win against SMU.

Rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and had one reception for 14 yards in a 41-0 win at UConn.

Justin Hardy • Sr. • WR • East Carolina • Vanceboro, N.C.

Had nine receptions for 104 yards and set the NCAA FBS career receptions record (355) in a 34-6 win against Tulane.

Howard Wilson • Fr. • CB • Houston • DeSoto, Texas

Had 15 tackles, a pass breakup and his third interception of the season in a 38-28 win against Tulsa.

Brandon Hayes • Sr. • RB • Memphis • Chicago, Ill.

Rushed for 189 yards on 21 carries and had three catches for 18 yards, including a touchdown, in a 31-20 win against USF.

2014 NCAA Football Rankings – Week 14 (Nov. 23)

AP & Amway Coaches Polls

The college football rankings are out and for the first time this season in the AP and Amway Coaches Poll, we have two different No. 1 teams.

The Florida State Seminoles are still on top in the AP Poll while the Alabama Crimson Tide are No. 1 in the Coaches Poll.

The Seminoles are followed by Alabama, the Oregon Ducks, Mississippi State Bulldogs and Baylor Bears in the AP Poll. In the Coaches Poll, the Crimson Tide is followed by Florida State, Oregon, Mississippi State and the TCU Horned Frogs.

Once again, there are no teams from the American Athletic Conference ranked. However, there are now teams among the others receiving votes.

The UCF Knights are among the others receiving votes in the AP Poll while the Cincinnati Bearcats are among the others receiving votes in the Coaches Poll.

College Football Playoff Rankings Week 4 (Nov. 18)

The College Football Playoff Rankings committee has released their rankings for the fourth time in 2014 and for the first time, we have a new No. 1 team in the Alabama Crimson Tide.

cfplogoAlabama jumped from No. 5 to No. 1 after beating now No. 4 Mississippi State. The Oregon Ducks and Florida State Seminoles remain at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

The TCU Horned Frogs drop from No. 4 to No. 5 and now are on the outside looking in at a big payday.

As you might have guessed, there are no teams from the American Athletic Conference ranked in the poll.

American Athletic Conference Weekly Football Honors – Nov. 17

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly football honors for the 12th week of the college football season.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

american2Gunner Kiel • So. • QB • Cincinnati • Columbus, Ind.

With questions abound as to whether he would start the game, Kiel played every snap on offense and helped Cincinnati win a 54-48 shootout against East Carolina, keeping the Bearcats even in the loss column atop the American Athletic Conference standings. Kiel completed 29 of 44 passes for a career-high 436 yards and four touchdowns, connecting on scoring strikes of 55, 17, 66 and 36 yards.  After East Carolina took a two-point lead with 1:02 left in the fourth quarter, Kiel brought the Bearcats within field goal range on just three plays to set up the game-winning kick with 15 seconds left. Kiel leads the American Athletic Conference with 24 touchdown passes, while he ranks second in the conference in passing yards at 276.1 yards per game.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jacoby Glenn • So. • CB • UCF • Prichard, Ala.

Glenn led a UCF defense that limited Tulsa, which had ranked third in The American in passing offense (294.1 ypg) to just 72 passing yards and 201 total yards in the Knights’ 31-7 win. Glenn had four pass breakups to go with five tackles to help hold the Golden Hurricane to 222 yards below its average. Glenn is tied for the American Athletic Conference lead with 14 passes defended, while he ranks sixth nationally with 1.6 passes defended per game.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Andrew Gantz • Fr. • K • Cincinnati • Dayton, Ohio

Gantz scored 12 points, connecting on a pair of field goals and going 6-for-6 on PATs to help Cincinnati to a 54-48 win against East Carolina, keeping the Bearcats even in the loss column atop the American Athletic Conference standings. After East Carolina had taken a two-point lead with 1:02 left in the fourth quarter, Gantz scored the game-winning points on a 47-yard field goal with 15 seconds left. He added a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter. Gantz, who has made his last 10 field goal attempts, ranks second in The American in scoring (8.2 points per game).

College Football Playoff Rankings Week 3 (Nov. 11)

The College Football Rankings are out for the third time in the 2014 season and the Mississippi State Bulldogs remain as the No. 1 team.

cfplogoWith Auburn losing, the top four teams looks a little different now. The Bulldogs are followed by the Oregon Ducks, Florida State Seminoles and TCU Horned Frogs. The Alabama Crimson Tide remain on the outside looking in.

Oregon jumped from fourth over into second over Florida State while TCU jumped from sixth to fourth.

Once again, there are no teams from the American Athletic Conference ranked in the CFP Top 25. There are no teams from outside the Power Five in the top 25 either.

Dane Evans • So. • QB • Tulsa • Sanger, Texas

Evans was the engineer behind Tulsa’s best offensive showing of the season, as the Golden Hurricane scored a 38-28 win against SMU. He completed 16 of 24 passes for 286 yards and five touchdowns without an interception, connecting on scoring strikes of 18, 42, 64, 1 and 32 yards. Evans had a streak of 12 consecutive completions during the game and threw four TD passes in the first half, helping the Hurricane take a 28-13 lead into halftime. Evans is second in the American Athletic Conference in passing yards (286.2 ypg), touchdown passes (19) and total offense (282.7 ypg).

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Parry Nickerson • Fr. • CB • Tulane • Terrytown, La.

Nickerson keyed Tulane’s defense, which forced four turnovers and held Houston to just two offensive touchdowns in the Green Wave’s 31-24 road win. Nickerson had seven tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and two fourth-quarter interceptions, including a pick in the end zone on the final play of the game as Houston threatened to tie the score. Nickerson is tied for the American Athletic Conference lead with five interceptions in his redshirt freshman season.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jake Elliott • So. • K • Memphis • Western Spring, Ill.

Elliott helped Memphis take over sole possession of first place in the American Athletic Conference standings as he scored 10 of the Tigers’ 16 points in a 16-13 win at Temple, making Memphis eligible for a bowl game for the first time since 2008. He connected on three field goals, including a 31-yard attempt as time expired to give Memphis the win. He added a 27-yard field goal that broke a 10-10 tie and hit from 42 yards in the second quarter to put the Tigers on the board. Elliott leads The American in scoring at 9.0 points per game.

WEEKLY HONOR ROLL

Had eight receptions for 110 yards and had a blocked punt on special teams in a 16-13 win at Temple.

2014 NCAA Football Rankings – Week 12 (Nov. 9)

AP & Amway Coaches Polls

For the fourth straight week, the Mississippi State Bulldogs remain as the No. 1 team in both the AP and Amway Coaches Polls.

They are followed by the Florida State Seminoles, Oregon Ducks, Alabama Crimson Tide and TCU Horned Frogs in the AP Poll. In the Amway Coaches Poll, the top five is the same as the AP with the exception of Alabama being third and Oregon fourth.

As you would expect, there are no teams from the American Athletic Conference ranked this week. However, the East Carolina Pirates and Cincinnati Bearcats are among the others receiving votes in the Coaches Poll.

We’ll have the College Football Playoff Rankings Poll when it’s announced on Tuesday.

College Football Playoff Rankings Week 2 (Nov. 4)

The College Football Playoff Committee rankings are out for the second time this season and like they are in the other polls, the Mississippi State Bulldogs remain on top.

With the Ole Miss Rebels losing, the top four looks a little different this week. Mississippi State is followed by the Florida State Seminoles, Auburn Tigers and Oregon Ducks, who moved up one spot. The Alabama Crimson Tide are on the outside looking in for the fourth and final playoff spot.

With the East Carolina Pirates losing, there are no teams from the American Athletic Conference ranked. There are no teams from outside the Power Five in the top 25 either.
