UConn Opens Up NIT On Tuesday Against Northeastern

The UConn Huskies men’s basketball team opened up the 2009-10 season in the NIT Season Tip-off where they eventually lost to Duke in the finals. And fittingly enough, the Huskies season will end in the Postseason NIT.

How far they will get will depend on which UConn team shows up on Tuesday night when they’ll host the Northeastern Huskies on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion. The game will be nationally-televised on ESPN2.

The winner will take on the winner of the Quinnipiac/Virginia Tech game.

Calhoun Back For Four More Years

Despite the rumors earlier this week, UConn Huskies head coach Jim Calhoun will be back as he’s agreed to a four-year extension to stay in Storrs.

Here’s the statement he issued through his agent on Thursday:

“I think it is important for me to put the recent questions about my future to rest and make it clear that I will be signing a new contract at UConn. I plan to continue working hard to get us back to where we expect to be as a basketball program and hope that this agreement will show people that I am committed to the future of UConn basketball.”

UConn athletic director Jeff Hathaway added this statement:

“I am excited that Jim has decided to continue coaching at the University of Connecticut and look forward to having a signed contract in the near future to make it official.”

Calhoun will enter his 25th season at UConn next year.

Nomar Garciaparra Retires As A Member of the Red Sox

There was a buzz around City of Palms Park in Ft. Myers, FL. on Tuesday morning.

The Boston Red Sox had called a press conference at 10:30 a.m. and initially no one knew what it was for. Could it be that they had signed Josh Beckett and/or Victor Martinez to contract extensions or had they traded Mike Lowell?

None of those scenarios were the case. Instead, it was for former Red Sox great Nomar Garciparra who was signing a one day contract and announcing his retirement from baseball.
