Jacoby Ellsbury & Josh Beckett Charity Wines

BOSTON BASEBALL CHARITY WINES RETURN:
JACOBY ELLSBURY & JOSH BECKETT MAKE ROSTER

Debuting from Longball Cellars are charity wines for Boston baseball stars Jacoby Ellsbury and Josh Beckett. The players do not profit a single dime. Instead, 100% of their proceeds will raise big league dollars for local charities:

Jacoby Ellsbury: ZinfandEllsbury – benefiting the Navajo Relief Fund, Project Bread and the Ellsbury-Read Project.

Josh Beckett: Chardon-K – benefiting The Josh Beckett Foundation.

The names ZinfandEllsbury and Chardon-K are word plays of the wine varietals in the bottles: Red Zinfandel and Chardonnay. The 2010 wines are produced by acclaimed winery Clos LaChance out of San Martin, California.

Both wines are expected to retail for about $14 a bottle, and will be available beginning in May 2010 across New England, wherever wine is sold. For non-local members of “The Nation,” wines will be available for purchase online at www.charitywines.com.

Baseball enthusiasts and wine aficionados may recall that in 2007, Charity Wines debuted in Boston with wines from Manny Ramirez (Manny Being Merlot), Curt Schilling (Schilling Schardonnay) and Tim Wakefield (CaberKnuckle). The effort sold more than a quarter-million bottles. Charity Wines returned in 2008 with releases from David Ortiz (Vintage Papi), Jason Varitek (Captain’s Cabernet) and Kevin Youkilis (SauvignYoouuk Blanc). To date, more than $1,400,000 has been raised overall as a result of athlete wines and their contributions.

ABOUT CHARITY WINES

After personal tragedies involving friends and family with cancer and heart disease, Andrew Graff started Charity Wines, a philanthropic division of his Massachusetts based company, VinLozano Imports Inc. With the goal of pairing fine wine with great charities, the Longball Cellars brand was born. Nationwide, more than 30 professional athletes across baseball, football and hockey have teamed up with Charity Wines to raise funds for great causes. Visit www.CharityWines.com.

NRF also provides the critical disaster relief for emergencies such as the recent northern AZ snowstorms, which greatly affected the Navajo Reservation. NRF support helps reservation programs reinforce a sense of hope for the Navajo people. Visit http://www.nrfprograms.org.

Project Bread

As the leading anti-hunger organization in Massachusetts, Project Bread is dedicated to alleviating, preventing, and ultimately ending hunger in the state. Through The Walk for Hunger, the oldest continual pledge walk in the country, Project Bread provides millions of dollars each year in privately donated funds to more than 400 emergency food programs in 128 communities statewide. Project Bread also advocates systemic solutions that prevent hunger and that provide food to families in natural, everyday settings, including schools. Visit http://www.projectbread.org.

Ellsbury-Read Project

The Ellsbury-Read Character Strength Project has been established to insure that character strength development receives priority attention from birth through the adult years. Red Sox sign LHP Alan Embree

Here’s the press release from the Boston Red Sox announcing the signing of Alan Embree to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

BOSTON — The Red Sox today announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Alan Embree to a 2010 minor league contract. In addition, Embree has been invited to Boston’s Major League Spring Training camp as a non-roster player. Embree will wear No. 43.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Embree, 40, spent 2009 with the Colorado Rockies, going 2-2 with a 5.84 ERA (16 ER/24.2 IP) in 36 relief appearances. His season was cut short when a batted ball fractured his right tibia on July 10.

The 16-year Major League veteran owns a 39-45 record with 25 saves and a 4.59 ERA (395 ER/774.0 IP) in 882 career games/four starts with the Indians (1992, 1995-96), Braves (1997-98), Diamondbacks (1998), Giants (1999-2001), White Sox (2001), Padres (2002, 2006), Red Sox (2002-05), Yankees (2005), Athletics (2007-08) and Rockies (2009). He ranks ninth all-time among Major League left-handers and second among active southpaws with 878 career relief outings.

He returns for a second stint in the Red Sox organization after going 8-9 with four saves and a 4.69 ERA (93 ER/178.1 IP) in 211 relief appearances with the club from 2002-05. He allowed earned runs in just one of his 19 postseason games with Boston, going 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA (2 ER/14.0 IP). Embree induced a ground ball by Ruben Sierra for the final out of Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS in Yankee Stadium.

Medical update on Red Sox Minor League outfielder Ryan Westmoreland

Here’s a press release from the Boston Red Sox on the progress of minor league outfielder Ryan Westmoreland after his brain surgery earlier this week.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox today received an encouraging report on the condition of Minor League outfielder Ryan Westmoreland.

According to Dr. Robert Spetzler, Westmoreland’s neurosurgeon and the director of Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Ryan has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit and into the hospital’s Neuro Rehabilitation Unit, where he will undergo physical and occupational therapy.

“Ryan is right on track and we expect progressive improvement,” said Dr. Spetzler.

“We are thrilled for Ryan and his family that the surgery went so well,” said Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein. “While we recognize that the recovery process is long and complicated, we are excited that all of the early indications are so positive. On behalf of the Westmoreland family, we thank everybody who has expressed concern and support for Ryan.”

The Red Sox request that the media please continue to respect the Westmoreland family’s privacy and refrain from contacting them until later in Ryan’s recovery.

Late Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 3/19

The visit to Bradenton wasn’t very kind to Josh Beckett and the Boston Red Sox on Friday afternoon as they fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-7 at McKechnie Field.

Beckett seemed to be feeling the effects of the flu bug that caused him to miss his last start. He wasn’t particularly sharp as he gave up four runs on six hits and two walks with a strikeout in 3 2/3 innings of work.

The key for Beckett though is that he got his work in:

“It would’ve nice to take 70 pitches a little further than 3-1/3, but I think we got our work in. Obviously, the numbers don’t look good, but the most important number for me today was 70 pitches. You miss a start during spring training, it’s pretty tough. But I knew I had to do something. There was no way I could’ve pitched the other day. I was basically bed-ridden for four days. You try and get what you can in, but today was definitely moving in the right direction. “I don’t think [Opening Night] will be a problem. We’ve got two or three more starts. Hopefully, I feel good enough tomorrow to go in and get a full week [of workouts] in this week.”

Scott Atchison allowed a two runs (one earned) on two hits and walk in 1 2/3 innings while Brian Shouse gave up a hit in his inning. Jorge Sosa took the loss as he allowed two runs on four hits with a strikeout. Junichi Tazawa gave up a run on a hit in his inning of work.

David Ortiz continues to swing a hot piece of lumber has he went 2-for-3 including a two-run homer. Jeremy Hermida also added a solo shot. The Red Sox did have 14 hits on the afternoon and Josh Reddick was the only one besides Big Papi to have two hits.

The Red Sox return to action on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. at City of Palms Park when the Baltimore Orioles come to town. Tin Wakefield will make the start for the Red Sox.

Tomorrow’s game will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market and will also be available via the radio on WEEI 850 AM.
