UConn Women Sweep 2010-11 Big East Major Awards

HARTFORD, Conn. – The No. 1 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team was well represented when the 2011 Major Awards were announced by the BIG EAST at a press conference on Friday afternoon at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Geno Auriemma was named Coach of the Year, Maya Moore was honored as the Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Bria Hartley earned Freshman of the Year honors.

Bria Hartley is the 11th Husky to be named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year.Auriemma led the Huskies (29-1, 16-0) to their ninth undefeated conference season and the 19th BIG EAST Regular Season Championship in the last 23 years. Auriemma takes home the award for the fourth-consecutive year and the 10th time overall. Auriemma, who is in his 26th season at UConn, enters BIG EAST Tournament play with a 764-123 overall record and a 58-9 mark during the BIG EAST Tournament. Connecticut has won 16 Tournament titles since 1989.

Moore wins the BIG EAST Player of the Year award for a record-tying third time in her career. She was the first freshman in the history of the league to earn the award and also took home the honor during her sophomore season. A Husky has now earned BIG EAST Player of the Year in each of the last four seasons and 17 times in the last 23 years. Moore joins former Husky star Kerry Bascom (1989, 1990, 1991) and former Villanova standout Shelly Pennefather (1985, 1986, 1987) as the only players to earn the prestigious award three times.

Her second-consecutive BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year nod is equally impressive as Moore will receive a $2,000 scholarship as the women’s basketball winner and an additional $2,000 as the female scholar-athlete, making her total award $4,000. She will join Rebecca Lobo as the only two-time winners of the women’s basketball award and she will be just the third player to win both the basketball and female awards in the same year (Leigh Curl of UConn in 1985 and Ruth Riley of Notre Dame in 2001).

Moore was recently named the Capital One University Division All-American of the Year by the College Sports Information Directors of America for the second-consecutive year as well. The Lawrenceville, Ga. native who sports a 3.7 GPA in an individualized major of sports media promotion, is a three-time Academic All-America pick.

Hartley becomes the 11th Husky to be named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year. The Rookie of the Year has worn a Connecticut uniform in four of the last six years. Hartley was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week six times this season and she the only freshman to make the All-BIG EAST Second Team. She and classmate Stefanie Dolson were unanimous All-Rookie Team picks.

I got an email from Brad Clemens about a new unofficial anthem for Red Sox Nation. It’s entitled “I am Red Sox Nation” and features the music of Brad Clemens, Jeff Clemens and Jabe Beyer.

Take a listen and let me know what you think. You can also leave a comment for them on their site as well.

Evening Red Sox News From the Fort – 3/3

Boston Red Sox pitchers Josh Beckett(notes), right, and Clay Buchholz(notes) run sprints prior to a spring baseball game against the Philadelphia Phillies at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Fla., Thursday, March 3, 2011. Beckett will miss his next scheduled spring training start Thursday because of concussion symptoms. Beckett was hit on the left temple while shagging balls in the outfield during batting practice Monday. Boston said Wednesday he has passed tests and been cleared for physical activity.

While the Boston Red Sox didn’t end up with a win in their Grapefruit League game against the Philadelphia Phillies, they did get some good news before the game.

That good news is the fact that Josh Beckett has been cleared medically to resume baseball activities. He’ll throw a three-inning simulated game in the bullpen on Friday and should be okay to make his next start on Tuesday. He also showed a little sense of humor this morning when he presented Ino Guerrero with a crossing guard vest.

In the game, the Red Sox couldn’t get anything going against the Phillies pitchers who made the trip from Clearwater, FL. They mustered just one hit off of four Phillies pitchers. Mike Cameron had the only hit of the afternoon and it came against Cole Hamels who looks like he’s ready to start the 2011 season.

The Red Sox used eight pitchers and the only one to allow a run was Stolmy Pimentel who gave up two runs on three hits and a walk with a strikeout.  Dan Wheeler allowed two hits in his inning of work while Andrew Miller gave up one hit with a strikeout.

Bobby Jenks made his Red Sox spring debut and allowed just a hit. Jason Rice walked one but had two strikeouts with Rich Hill throwing a perfect inning.  Michael Bowden, who is out of options, walked two and struck out one. Blake Maxwell rounded out the Red Sox pitchers by striking out one in his inning of work.

The Red Sox will make a trip north on Friday night as they had to Tampa to take on the New York Yankees. Clay Buchholz is expected to make the start and he’ll be caught by Jason Varitek. Jed Lowrie, Darnell McDonald, Jose Iglesias, Lars Anderson and Ryan Kalish will also make the trip. The Yankees will counter with one-time Red Sox pitcher Bartolo Colon.

And you’re in luck if you live in the Red Sox or Yankees television markets or subscribe to MLB.tv as the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. YES will carry the game in the Yankees television market.

If all goes according to plan tomorrow, I do plan to do a gameday thread.

Red Sox News From The Fort – 3/3

The Boston Red Sox finally played someone other than the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday and they came away 6-1 losers to the Atlanta Braves at City of Palms Park.

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz(notes) hits a single in the first inning of their spring training baseball game against the Atlanta Braves at City of Palms Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla., Wednesday, March 2, 2011. Ortiz went 3 for 3 in the 6-1 loss to Atlanta.John Lackey made his 2011 spring debut for the Red Sox and allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout in two innings. The one run he allowed came on a home run by former Red Sox shortstop Alex Gonzalez. Scott Atchison was perfect in his inning of work and Hideki Okajima bounced back with a 1-2-3 inning, including two striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Kyle Weiland allowed one run on three hits but had three strikeouts over two innings. Unfortunately for him, he was charged with the loss. Alex Wilson had a poor afternoon as he allowed three runs (two earned) on a hit and four walks. He was the victim of a Jose Iglesias throwing error as well of his own control issues.

On the offensive side of things, David Ortiz continues his hot start to the spring as he was 3-for-3 with an RBI and yes folks, a stolen base. Jacoby Ellsbury, Jose Iglesias and Nate Spears had the other hits for the Red Sox.

Today, the Philadelphia Phillies come to City of Palms Park in what could be a World Series preview. Okay let’s not get ahead of ourselves here but these are the favorites from each league to make the World Series.

Stolmy Pimentel will make the start for the Red Sox instead of Josh Beckett who was scratched after suffering a mild concussion earlier in the week. Beckett is on track to make his next start.

Evening Red Sox News From The Fort – 3/1

It was a good afternoon for the Boston Red Sox as seven pitchers combined on a 5-0 shutout of the Minnesota Twins at Hammond Stadium. The Red Sox now lead the Mayor’s Cup 2-1.

Boston Red SoxThe one bad thing to come out of the game was the fact that Brent Dlugach dislocated his shoulder making catch on a bunt by Alexi Casilla in the 5th inning.

Jon Lester got the start and threw 18 of his 27 pitches for strikes. He allowed one hit, one walk and had one strikeout in two innings of work to pick up the win. Alfredo Aceves followed him with two innings of one hit ball. Jonathan Papelbon needed all of six pitches, five of them for strikes in his inning of work.

Randy Williams, Rich Hill, Tony Pena Jr and Matt Fox combined to give up two hits, two walks and had three strikeouts over the final four innings.

Josh Reddick knocked in the first run of the day for the Red Sox with a sacrifice fly and was 1-for-2 on the day. Jed Lowrie drove in the second run of the day with a single which turned out to be his only hit of the day. Mike Cameron went 2-for-3 while Kevin Youkilis was 0-for-2 with a walk. Jarrod Saltalamacchia was also 0-for-2 with a walk and had a throwing error on a pickoff attempt at first base.

Red Sox prospect Juan Carlos Linares had a good afternoon as he was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Paul Hoover and Nate Spears had the other RBIs for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox will finally see someone other than the Twins on Wednesday as the Atlanta Braves come to town for a 1:05 p.m. at City of Palms Park. John Lackey will make his spring debut and Scott Atchison and Hideki Okajima are two of the relievers scheduled to work tomorrow.

Maya Moore Wins Record Eighth Big East Player of Week Honors

Maya Moore doesn’t care about records that she’s broken. It was evident during Monday night’s UConn Huskies women’s basketball senior night when they listed all of her accomplishments in her four years at Storrs.

Connecticut Huskies forward Maya Moore (23), raises her jersey to the fans after receiving it as part of senior night ceremonies. The University of Connecticut woman's basketball team played Syracuse University at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs. The game was also Seniors night, the last regular season game scheduled at Storrs, and Maya Moore and Lorin Dixon were presented with jerseys. And now we can add another record to the already long list.

For a record eighth time this season and all but assuring her as being named the Big East Player of the Year later this week, Moore was named the Big East Player of the Week.

In helping the Huskies cap off a perfect Big East regular season in a 3-0 week,  Moore 21 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

In the 80-59 over the Seton Hall Pirates, Moore had 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. In the 52-42 win over the Georgetown Hoyas, Moore had 20 points,  eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. And in her final regular season home game at Gampel Pavilion, an 82-47 win over Syracuse, Moore had 23 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

She has scored in double figures in 146 of 150 career games and has scored at least 20 points in 71 of those 150 career games. Her record at UConn is a resounding 147-3.

Moore and the Huskies are back in action on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Big East Tournament being held in Hartford, CT at the XL Center.

Red Sox News From The Fort – 3/1

With the Boston Red Sox getting ready to take on the Minnesota Twins across town at Hammond Stadium, the news coming from City of Palms Park is good. Josh Beckett met with reporters this morning and said he was feeling better.

It doesn’t look like he’ll make his next start on Thursday but the fact he is feeling better is a good sign. Hopefully Red Sox Nation will let out its collective sigh of relief now. What we don’t need is Beckett having to battle this all season long. And my best guess would be is that you probably won’t see Beckett shagging any more fly balls during spring training this year.

Here are the lineups for today’s game.
