It was a good afternoon for the Boston Red Sox as seven pitchers combined on a 5-0 shutout of the Minnesota Twins at Hammond Stadium. The Red Sox now lead the Mayor’s Cup 2-1.
The one bad thing to come out of the game was the fact that Brent Dlugach dislocated his shoulder making catch on a bunt by Alexi Casilla in the 5th inning.
Jon Lester got the start and threw 18 of his 27 pitches for strikes. He allowed one hit, one walk and had one strikeout in two innings of work to pick up the win. Alfredo Aceves followed him with two innings of one hit ball. Jonathan Papelbon needed all of six pitches, five of them for strikes in his inning of work.
Randy Williams, Rich Hill, Tony Pena Jr and Matt Fox combined to give up two hits, two walks and had three strikeouts over the final four innings.
Josh Reddick knocked in the first run of the day for the Red Sox with a sacrifice fly and was 1-for-2 on the day. Jed Lowrie drove in the second run of the day with a single which turned out to be his only hit of the day. Mike Cameron went 2-for-3 while Kevin Youkilis was 0-for-2 with a walk. Jarrod Saltalamacchia was also 0-for-2 with a walk and had a throwing error on a pickoff attempt at first base.
Red Sox prospect Juan Carlos Linares had a good afternoon as he was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Paul Hoover and Nate Spears had the other RBIs for the Red Sox.
The Red Sox will finally see someone other than the Twins on Wednesday as the Atlanta Braves come to town for a 1:05 p.m. at City of Palms Park. John Lackey will make his spring debut and Scott Atchison and Hideki Okajima are two of the relievers scheduled to work tomorrow.
