UConn Men’s 2012-13 Big East Opponents Announced

Here’s the release from UConn and the Big East announcing the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team’s 2012-13 Big East opponents.

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team will play home-and-home series against Cincinnati, DePaul, Providence, and USF as part of its 18-game BIG EAST Conference schedule in 2012-13, according to the game sites and opponents breakdown released by the league Thursday afternoon.

UConn Huskies men's basketballThe Huskies will also play host to Syracuse in the final season in the league for the Orange, and will journey to Pittsburgh to play the Panthers in their last season as a BIG EAST member.

With 15 member schools in the BIG EAST in 2012-13, each team will play 10 league opponents once and four opponents twice. In addition to its four home-and-home opponents and Syracuse, UConn will also be at home against Georgetown, Louisville, Rutgers and Villanova.

The Huskies will play on the road against Marquette, Notre Dame, St. John’s and Seton Hall, as well as Pittsburgh and the four repeat opponents.

Nine of the UConn league games will be against teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season.

The BIG EAST will play a total of 135 regular-season conference games, with 75 single-play matchups and 30 home-and-home series. The selection of repeat opponents is based on television contractual obligations, the projected strength of teams, competitive balance, rivalries, geography, and schedule history.  All league games will be televised, either by CBS or the ESPN family of networks.

Of the 30 home-and-home series, only seven are the same as last season. UConn played home-and-home series against Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Seton Hall last year.

The complete 2012-13 BIG EAST schedule, including venues, game dates and starting times, will be announced at a later date.

Red Sox News & Notes – 6/28

David Ortiz #34 of the Boston Red Sox and J.P. Arencibia #9 of the Toronto Blue Jays watches the flight of a home run by Ortiz in the fifth inning at Fenway Park June 27, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Before heading to the left coast after yesterday afternoon’s game, the Boston Red Sox had some business to attend to, the rubber game with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Things went well for the local nine as they got out to a big early lead with Jon Lester making it hold up in a 10-4 win.

It turned out to be a big win for the Red Sox. With the Tampa Bay Rays losing to the Kansas City Royals, the Red Sox moved up another notch in the AL East standings into a tie for third with the Rays. They both sit 6.5 games out of first and are 1.5 games behind the second place Baltimore Orioles. That’s also the difference in the wild card standings as well.

Considering the way this season has gone for the Red Sox and all of the injuries, things are much better than the “rock bottom” days of April.

The Red Sox did this one with the offense as they took advantage of a wild Ricky Romero for six runs in the 1st inning. It took Romero until the sixth batter of the inning to record an out when Will Middlebrooks had an RBI ground out to make it 4-1. Mike Aviles and Darnell McDonald followed with RBI singles to extend the lead to 6-1.

They would add a run in the 2nd on Adrian Gonzalez‘s RBI single. Another Gonzo RBI single in the 4th made it 8-2. Two batters later Aviles knocked in a run with a double to make it 9-2.

The Red Sox would add their final run of the day when David Ortiz hit a 418 foot home run over the Red Sox bullpen in the 5th inning. For Big Papi, it was career home run 399. It was really also the first pitch he was able to swing it after being walked in his first three at-bats.

Lester would give up a quick run to start the game when Colby Rasmus singled in Brett Lawrie who led off the game with a double. After that Lester settled in until he left a pitch out over the plate to Jose Bautista who cleared everything in left field. He even left a huge dent on a black SUV in a parking garage behind the Green Monster.

He left another changeup over the plate to Bautista in the 6th who took it for double down the right field line that was misplayed by Darnell McDonald. With the error by DMac, Bautista went to third but wasn’t there long as Edwin Encarnacion took advantage of a mistake pitch by Lester and crushed a home run to close out the scoring at 10-4.

Given how the season has gone for Lester, he has to be mostly happy with the results. I’d have to think it’s a lot easier to pitch when your team gets you six runs after you gave up one the previous half inning. The mistakes he made are correctable.

But with the top of the Red Sox rotation in flux, it was exactly what they needed.

The Red Sox now head out for west for their first west coast trip of the season. They’ll play four in Seattle before heading to Bay area for three with the Oakland Athletics. So you know what that means folks. You’re going to need to stay up late for the next week to enjoy your favorite team.

I’m up for the challenge. Are you?

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 6/27

Ricky Romero (L), Jon Lester (R)

After coming back for a 5-1 win last night, the Boston Red Sox look to take the series before heading to the left coast in the finale of a three-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Blue Jays television market, you can catch the game on Rogers SportsNet or TVA Sports (French language).  If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Jon Lester looks to put things together for the first time in a while as he toes the slab for the 16th time this season. In his previous 15 starts, Lester is 4-5 with a 4.48 ERA. He took the loss in his only start against the Jays back on Aprill 11th after allowing three runs in eight innings (complete game). Lester’s made 19 career starts against the Jays and is 10-5 with a 3.08 ERA. Seven of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 4-1 with a 2.61 ERA.

Former Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell sends his ace Ricky Romero to the hill for the 16th time this season. In his previous 15 starts, Romero is 8-1 with a 4.34 ERA. In his only start this season against the Red Sox, he was matched up with Lester in that Aprill 11th start and got the win after allowing one run in 8.1 innings of work. He’s made 14 career starts against the local nine and is 5-6 with a 6.45 ERA. Half of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 3-3 with a 5.85 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 6/26

Ryan Kalish #55 of the Boston Red Sox is unable to catch a ball hit by Ben Francisco #8 of the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth inning at Fenway Park June 25, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts

Day one of the post-Kevin Youkilis era (the only time I’ll say this by the way) didn’t go so well for the Boston Red Sox.

Felix Doubront got in some early trouble in which the Toronto Blue Jays got to him for four runs early. But despite the best efforts from the offense, Doubront couldn’t keep the game tied as the Red Sox would eventually fall 9-6 in game that finished up just after midnight after a one hour 56 minute rain delay.

With the win, the Blue Jays moved into a tie for fourth place in the AL East with the Red Sox. Both teams are 38-35 and are two games behind the third place Tampa Bay Rays.

It was obvious from the start that Doubront didn’t have the same stuff that had helped him to eight wins on the season. He allowed the first four batters of the game to reach although one was on Will Middlebrooks error. But three of those four scored with Edwin Encarnacion, the man who drove in the third run of the game after Colby Rasmus had homered two batters before him, came around to score later in the 1st.

Doubront gave up another run in the 2nd inning when Rasmus drove in his third run of the game with a single. After getting Jose Bautista to ground into an inning-ending double play that inning, Doubront settled down allowing two hits and a walk until the 6th. In that inning, he had gotten the first two outs before Ben Francisco doubled for the second time in the game. J.P. Arencibia followed that with a two-run moon shot that put the Jays out front for good at 7-5.

Certainly not the best effort from Doubront on the night but given how he’s pitched this season, I’m sure this was just an aberration. He’s been probably the most consistent starter up to this point for the Red Sox this season. I’d expect him to make the adjustments from this start and be much better the next time on the bump.

Doubront should thank the offense for keeping the game close.

After he had given up those four runs in the 1st, David Ortiz got two of them back with a long two-run homer over the Red Sox bullpen that brought in Dustin Pedroia who had tripled. They then put together a two-out rally in the 3rd that narrowed the gap to 5-4.

The Red Sox wasted no time in the 4th inning tying the game up as Cody Ross led off with a double and came in to score on a Ryan Kalish single. But that would the last time the Red Sox would score until Big Papi’s second homer of the game in the 8th.

Whether or not this was just a hangover effect from Sunday’s events remains to be seen. Hopefully it was just one of those nights and the Red Sox continue this good stretch of baseball that pulled them back over the .500 mark. They still have two more games against the Jays before making a trip to the left coast.

Two wins would go a long way right given how competitive this AL East is and probably will be for the rest of the season.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Marlon Byrd Suspended 50 Games For PED’s

If Marlon Byrd wants to play in the big leagues again this year, he’ll now have to wait until August 20th to do. The reason why is that MLB has announced that Byrd was suspended 50 games for testing positive for a banned substance.

Boston Red Sox's Marlon Byrd walks away after he was tagged out at home by Baltimore Orioles' Matt Wieters in the 16th inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Sunday, May 6, 2012. That banned substance is reportedly Tamoxifen.

According to the National Cancer Institute, Tamoxifen is used to block the production of estrogen in breast cancer patients. It can also be used during cycles of steroids, hence why it’s banned by MLB.

Byrd, who was designated for assignment by the Red Sox earlier this month, is currently a free agent. Since no one picked him up during waivers, the Red Sox are currently paying the remaining $6.5 million on his contract. But with the suspension for 50 games, the Red Sox will save a little money.

He was acquired from the Chicago Cubs on April 21st for Michael Bowden and a player to be named later who turned out to be Hunter Cervenka.

After starting out the season 3-for-43 with the Cubbies, Byrd hit .270 (27-for-100) with one home run and seven RBIs in 34 games for the local nine.
