Fourth of July Red Sox Delight

Aaron Cook (L), A.J. Griffin (R)

After falling 3-2 last night in a walkoff loss, the Boston Red Sox look to salvage the finale of a three-game set with the Oakland A’s at O.co Coliseum.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Athletics television market, you can catch the game on CSN California.  And if you don’t live in either market you’re in luck as well as the MLB Network will be broadcasting the game as well (not in Red Sox or Athletics television markets). If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

After a dominating performance his last time out, Aaron Cook looks to repeat that in his fourth start of 2012. In his previous three starts, Cook is 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA. He’s made two career starts against the Athletics and is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA. He picked up the win after allowing one run in eight innings of work in his only road start against the A’s.

A.J. Griffin will make just his third big league start for the A’s this afternoon. In his previous two starts, Griffin has no record with a 1.50 ERA (2 ER/12 IP). This will be his first career start against the Red Sox.

First pitch is scheduled for 10:05 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Athletics television market, you can catch the game on CSN California.  If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Overall in his career, Lester is 3-3 with a 4.53 ERA in nine starts. Three of those starts have come at Al Davis Memorial Stadium where he is 1-2 with a 4.58 ERA.

One time member of Red Sox, Bartolo Colon, returns from the disabled list to make his his 16th start of the season. In his previous 15 starts, Colon is 6-7 with a 4.22 ERA. Red Sox News & Notes – 7/3

Jarrod Saltalamacchia #39 of the Boston Red Sox talks to Daisuke Matsuzaka #18 of the Boston Red Sox in the second inning of their game against the Oakland Athletics at O.co Coliseum on July 2, 2012 in Oakland, California.

The left coast isn’t proving to be to kind to the Boston Red Sox as last night it was two former members of the organization that came back to haunt them.

Josh Reddick and Brandon Moss both hit home runs with Moss’ three-run shot the big blow as the Oakland Athletics beat the visiting nine from Boston 6-1.

The Red Sox missed a chance to move up in the AL East standings as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees, this weekend’s opponent. And while the Red Sox were finishing up, the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles. With their win, the Rays move up to a tie for third at 6.5 games behind the Yanks while the Red Sox remain a 1/2 game behind the Orioles who are six back of first.

Daisuke Matsuzaka started this one for the Red Sox and we all know he’s had troubles in the 1st inning. Last night, he gave up his usual early run when Reddick took a fastball that was right down Broadway and cranked it out of O.co Coliseum. Dice-K’s big trouble though was the 2nd inning when he didn’t retire a batter.

He gave up a leadoff double to Seth Smith and walked the A’s catcher Derek Norris. Another fastball down the heart of the plate to Moss and just like that it was 4-1. It didn’t stop there either as he gave up a single to Brandon Inge and then walked Cliff Pennington.

Clayton Mortensen took over and walked former Sox OF Coco Crisp. He got Jemile Weeks to foul out before Reddick’s sacrifice fly and finished off the inning by getting Yoenis Cespedes to ground out.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that Dice-K was struggling with everything last night and it looked as though he was pitching hurt. Well that turned out to be the case as he was dealing with a tight neck. It’s the same injury that plagued him during his rehab.

Dice-K reportedly told the Red Sox he would be okay to pitch and didn’t even throw a side session before last night’s start. Obviously it didn’t work out so well.

I do think part of the blame should lie within the medical staff and manager Bobby Valentine and pitching coach Bob McClure.

Right now, they have an extra starting pitcher due to the emergence of Franklin Morales and Aaron Cook. Now I know they want to give the starters an extra day of rest. But knowing that Dice-K was hurt and might not be okay to pitch turned out to cost them. And maybe in more than ways than one.

They had to use Mortensen for five innings and with Will Middlebrooks‘ balky hamstring, Mortensen could be the odd man out since he’s only one down in the bullpen with an option remaining. And by using him for five innings last night, he probably won’t be available for the rest of this series.

Despite giving up a run, Mortensen was solid last night. He kept the game from getting out of hand but with Jarrod Parker dealing against the Red Sox like he did in May, his effort didn’t matter. Well it did, I think y’all get what I was trying to say there.

The odds are that Dice-K will end up back on the disabled list. The question is though, are the Red Sox ready to move on from the Dice-K era? Given how much they invested in him, they might not be. But given what he’s given the team, it’s probably time to cut their losses. He is a free agent after the season and there’s probably a zero percent chance of him coming back here.

If he’s hurt, they obviously wouldn’t be able to trade him and even if they could, he wouldn’t bring much in return. So do they just ride out the season with him or cut him loose? If he continues to pitch like has so far this season, they are probably better served by letting him go.

It did look like the Red Sox were going to have a big night when Daniel Nava led off the game with a double and then came around to score on a Dustin Pedroia single. After that though, they never really could mount anything against Parker.

For now, we have to just wait and see what the Red Sox are going to do with Dice-K and the Middlebrooks situation as well as Mortensen. With the only infielders on the 40-man roster being Mauro Gomez (1B) and Jose Iglesias (SS), if the Red Sox were to bring another infielder up, say Andy LaRoche, they would have to cut someone from the 40-man.

And with Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford nearing their returns plus two more 40-man roster moves when they do, the Red Sox front office will have a tough decision to make today.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Evening Red Sox Delight – 7/2

Daisuke Matsuzaka (L), Jarrod Parker (R)

After splitting the four-game set with the Seattle Mariners, the Boston Red Sox travel down the left coast to finish up their seven-game west coast road trip. They’ll kick that off tonight with the first of a three-game set with the Oakland Athletics at O.co Coliseum.

First pitch is scheduled for 10:05 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Athletics television market, you can catch the game on CSN California.  If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Daisuke Matsuzaka looks to get his first win of the season in his fifth start of 2012. In his previous four starts, Matsuzaka is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA. He last faced the A’s in 2010 when he went 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA (4 ER/13.1 IP) in two starts. He’s made seven career starts against the A’s and is 4-1 with a 3.69 ERA. Five of those starts have come on the road where he is 2-1 with a 3.76 ERA. Four of those starts have come at O.co Coliseum where he is 2-1 with a 3.80 ERA. The other road start against A’s came in the Toyko Dome in 2008.

Jarrod Parker toes the rubber for the 13th time in 2012 for the A’s. In his previous 12 starts, Parker is 4-3 with a 2.57 ERA. His lone career start against the Red Sox came earlier this season when he picked up the win after allowing one earned run in 6.1 innings of work back on May 1st.

Red Sox News & Notes – 7/2

Closing pitcher Alfredo Aceves #91 of the Boston Red Sox celebrates with catcher Kelly Shoppach #10 after defeating the Seattle Mariners 2-1 in ten innings at Safeco Field on July 1, 2012 in Seattle, Washington.

Something tells me that the Boston Red Sox are probably just a little bit happy that they were able to escape the Emerald City with a split of the four-game set with the Seattle Mariners. If they hadn’t, it probably wouldn’t have been good for their psyches.

The 2-1 win in 10 innings almost didn’t happen either.

The offense was being shut down by Jason Vargas through the first 7.1 innings as they managed just four hits and a walk up to that point. Things began to look a little brighter when Dustin Pedroia smacked a home run in the 8th to tie the game up at one.

The bullpen did its job to keep the game tied and force some more bonus baseball for the second time in as many days. You almost didn’t want to see extra innings because the Red Sox were 0-5 so far this season.

But they made sure to take care of business right away.

Ryan Kalish, who was pinch-hitting for Brent Lillibridge, laced a double to right off of Brandon League. He would go to third on a Pedroia single to Ichiro Suzuki in right as Kalish was wisely held up at third. Lucas Luetge took over for League and gave up a long sacrifice fly to the only representative the Red Sox will have in the 2012 MLB All-Star Game in David Ortiz.

With Cody Ross at the plate, Pedroia stole second before Ross worked a walk. But Luetge got out of trouble when Adrian Gonzalez flew out to left. Alfredo Aceves came on in the bottom of the 10th and was drama free as he set the side down in order to pick up his 19th save of the season.

If it weren’t for the Red Sox bullpen yesterday afternoon, they may have been sent to their second straight defeat instead of earning the split.

Felix Doubront wasn’t all that effective on the mound as it looks as though he could use a break. He’s entering uncharted territory as far as innings pitched and it’s beginning to show. Doubront had been the most consistent starting pitcher the Red Sox have had this season but with five walks in 4.1 innings this outing on top of allowing 11 hits his last time out before yesterday, it makes you wonder if Bobby Valentine will stick with the six-man rotation until the All-Star break or will he go with Jon Lester on regular rest this weekend.

Matt Albers bailed out Doubront on the 5th with just one pitch in a bases loaded situation. He induced a grounder off the bat of Jesus Montero to Will Middlebrooks at third. WMB stepped on the third base bag and threw across the diamond to get Montero and complete the inning-ending double play. Albers would end up walking one in his 1.2 innings of work while Scott Atchison was perfect in his two innings.

Vicente Padilla worked out of a jam he created in the 9th to set the stage for the 10th inning heroics.

The Mariners pitching staff isn’t exactly the greatest (with the exception of Felix Hernandez) but for the most part of the series, the Red Sox offense made them all look like Cy Young candidates (yes, I know King Felix has won one). Whether it was the long trip out to Seattle or just the normal struggles that an offense hits remains to be seen.

One thing’s for sure, they don’t want it to happen again in Oakland this week.

As down and out as the Red Sox have looked at times this season, yesterday’s win got them to within a half game of the second place Baltimore Orioles. Sure they are 6.5 games out behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East but it looks like there’s a good chance the Red Sox could enter the All-Star break in second.

A good week of baseball will ensure that. Let’s hope it happens.

Big Papi Only Member of Red Sox Heading To 2012 MLB All-Star Game

David Ortiz #34 of the Boston Red Sox watches as his grand slam leaves the park in the fourth inning against the Miami Marlins during interleague play at Fenway Park on June 20, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts.

It’s been since 2001 when the Boston Red Sox had one representative in a MLB All-Star Game. And in the 2012 MLB All-Star Game to be held in Kansas City on July 10th, that’ll be the case as well.

David Ortiz was the only member of the Red Sox to make the AL All-Star Team and he did that by winning the fan voting at DH. No other player on the Red Sox was voted in by the players or the coaches. Nor were any of the choice of AL manager Ron Washington.

Big Papi enters Sunday’s game with the Seattle Mariners on the cusp of 400 home runs as he currently sits at 399. He is hitting .305 this season so far in 77 games with 21 home runs and 53 RBIs.

Given the way the Red Sox season has gone, this is not surprising at all. Maybe they’ll get lucky and have some one chosen to replace a player that can’t or won’t be able to play in the game.

But I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one folks.
