Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 7/1

Felix Doubront (L), Jason Vargas (R)

After falling 3-2 in 11 innings last night, the Boston Red Sox will try this afternoon to gain a split in the finale of a four-game set with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field in Seattle, WA.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Mariners television market, you can catch the game on ROOT Sports.  If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Felix Doubront looks to help the Red Sox gain that split of the series in his 16th start of 2012. In his previous 15 starts, Doubront is 8-4 with a 4.54 ERA. His only career appearance against the Mariners came into 2010 out of the bullpen when he didn’t allow a run in 1.1 innings of work. This afternoon’s start will mark his first appearance at Safeco Field.

Jason Vargas will make his 18th start of 2012 this afternoon. In his previous 17 starts, Vargas is 7-7 with a 4.54 ERA. He’s made one start against the Red Sox this season and took the loss after allowing five runs in six innings back on May 12th. He’s made four starts against the Red Sox in his career and is 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA. Two of those starts have come at Safeco Field where he is 0-1 with a 2.19 ERA (3 ER/12.1 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 7/1

Chone Figgins #9 of the Seattle Mariners is mobbed by teammates after hitting the game winning sacrifice fly in the eleventh inning to defeat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 at Safeco Field on June 30, 2012 in Seattle, Washington.

If you thought the end of the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners last night looked familiar, it’s because it just about was the same as Thursday night.

One of the differences was the fact that instead of Jarrod Saltalamacchia dropping the ball on the throw from Cody Ross, he misplayed it and that allowed the Mariners to take a 3-2 win over the visiting nine in the 11th inning (Thursday night’s loss was in the bottom of the 9th).

We really shouldn’t blame Salty though for the loss. That should lie with the offense which went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

They had runners on first and third in the 4th with two outs only to see Will Middlebrooks strike out. In the 5th, Ross was stranded at second base after Mike Aviles grounded out and Daniel Nava lined out.

They got their first run in the 7th after Ryan Kalish grounded into a fielder’s choice RBI. The second run came in when Middlebrooks scored on a passed ball. But with Kalish at second, Aviles grounded out, Nava walked and Dustin Pedroia grounded out.

In the 9th against Mariners closer Tom Wilhelmsen, they stranded Ross and Kalish on the base paths when Aviles struck out and Nava flew out. In the 10th, Pedroia and David Ortiz led off with singles only to be left there too when Salty struck out, Adrian Gonzalez and Middlebrooks grounded into fielder’s choices.

Against a team like the Mariners who are at the bottom of the AL West, the Red Sox need to win these games. They need to take advantage of the chances when they have them.

Josh Beckett made his return from the disabled list and gave the Red Sox a solid six innings of work. He didn’t allow his first hit of the night until the 5th inning when Miguel Olivo singled. He ran into some trouble in the 6th though.

After getting the first out, Ichiro Suzuki singled and stole second. He walked Casper Wells and that was followed by a Kyle Seager single to load up the bases. Thursday night’s hero John Jaso doubled in two runs. Beckett escaped further trouble by getting Justin Smoak to ground out to him and Olivo to ground to third sandwiched around an intentional walk to Dustin Ackley.

Beckett didn’t show any signs of rust with the layoff due to shoulder inflammation. His fastball was right about the same velocity it was before the stint on the disabled list. He was able to command his fastball and locate it as well as other pitches.

The bullpen was solid behind him as well. Mark Melancon, Andrew Miller, Vicente Padilla and Alfredo Aceves all pitched well. Unfortunately the Mariners got Aceves in his third inning of work to bring in the winning run.

The Red Sox really need a win this afternoon. Losing three-of-four to the Mariners could possibly dampen their spirts and despite two walkoff losses they aren’t playing all that badly. They just need a really big offensive output to keep things on track.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Evening Red Sox Delight – 6/30

Josh Beckett (L), Erasmo Ramirez (R)

After winning 5-0 last night, the Boston Red Sox look to secure a least a split of the series tonight in the third game of a four-game set with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field in Seattle, WA.

First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Mariners television market, you can catch the game on ROOT Sports.  And if you don’t live in either market, you’re in luck as the MLB Network will have coverage of the game (not in Red Sox or Mariners television markets). If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

After being placed on the 15-day DL with shoulder inflammation, Josh Beckett returns to make his 13th start of the 2012 season. In his previous 12 starts, Beckett is 4-7 with a 4.14 ERA. He’s made one start against the Mariners this season picking up the win after throwing seven shutout innings back on May 15th. In his career, Beckett is 7-2 with a 3.03 ERA in 10 career starts. Four of those starts have come at Safeco Field where he is 2-1 with a 3.33 ERA.

Erasmo Ramirez makes his fourth start (11th appearance) of 2012 tonight for the struggling Mariners. In his previous 10 appearances (three starts), Ramirez is 0-2 with a 4.18 ERA. In his three starts, he is 0-2 with a 5.29 ERA. Tonight marks his first career start and appearance against the Red Sox.

Darnell McDonald Odd Man Out With Beckett Returning

If you take a look at the below tweet from Boston Red Sox outfielder Darnell McDonald, it appears he has been designated for assignment to make room for Josh Beckett on the 25-man roster.

When McDonald was first called up to the Red Sox in 2010, he made a big splash helping them to a come-from-behind win over the Texas Rangers.

Let’s relive the first memories of DMac with the Red Sox.

Red Sox News & Notes – 6/30

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Aaron Cook, left, greets catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, right, after Cook threw a two-hit shutout against the Seattle Mariners in a baseball game, Friday, June 29, 2012, in Seattle.

Given how Aaron Cook and Hector Noesi were dealing through the first four innings, we were shaping up for a repeat of the Seattle Mariners 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night. But on Friday night, the results were just a little different.

The Red Sox finally broke through with three home runs off of Noesi in the 5th while Cook continued pounded his sinker into the zone as visiting nine went on to a 5-0 win over the home team.

You could argue that any one of the four guys to hit home runs, Will Middlebrooks, Cody Ross, Daniel Nava or Jarrod Saltalamacchia, were the stars of the game. To me there’s no question that star was Cook.

He needed just 81 pitches to shut down the Mariners anemic offense last night. He threw primarily sinkers last night (73) while mixing in the occasional curveball (8). His sinker stayed down in the zone for the entire night and the result of that was 15 ground ball outs. Of the two hits he allowed on the night, only one was hard hit. The other was a bang bang play at first on Ichiro Suzuki after Dustin Pedroia made a great stop.

The highest amount of pitches Cook had to throw in an inning was 12 and he did that twice (3rd and 7th innings). The least amount of pitches he need in an inning was five (4th inning).

When Cook pitches like he did last night, there’s no telling how good he can be. The good news for him is that Bobby Valentine is going with a six-man rotation until at least the All-Star break. After that, Cook along with Franklin Morales are going to make Valentine’s decision making process all the much harder especially when Clay Buchholz returns from the disabled list.

It was Middlebrooks who broke through first against the Noesi with a solo home run in the 5th. Ross followed that up with one of his own to give the Red Sox back-to-back home runs. Two outs later, Nava connected for a solo home run of his own to make it 3-0.

The Red Sox chased Noesi in the 6th after David Ortiz led off with a double and came into score on Salty’s opposite field home run in the 6th. The Mariners bullpen was solid after Noesi left the game until 9th when the Red Sox loaded the bases up on Oliver Perez. But he got Pedey to line out to right to end the threat.

With the way Cook pitched last night, the Red Sox really only needed one run. But after basically being shutdown for 13 straight innings, it was nice to see the offense break out.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Red Sox News & Notes – 6/29

Casper Wells #33 of the Seattle Mariners scores the winning run on a single by John Jaso against catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia #39 of the Boston Red Sox at Safeco Field on June 28, 2012 in Seattle, Washington.

With the other four teams in the American League East losing on Thursday, the Boston Red Sox had a prime opportunity to pick up a game on everybody in the standings. Unfortunately though, they ran into King Felix Hernandez.

King Felix tied his career-high of 13 strikeouts and John Jaso delivered the pinch-hit walkoff single in the bottom of the 9th to give the Seattle Mariners the 1-0 win over the visiting nine.

Franklin Morales did his best to match Hernandez as he allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out seven in seven innings of work. Morales gave way to Andrew Miller who set the side down in order in the 8th.

However in the 9th Scott Atchison gave up a one out double to Casper Wells. After an intentional walk to Justin Smoak, Jaso singled to Cody Ross in right field. Ross’ throw to the plate was on target and beat Wells to the plate but Jarrod Saltalamacchia couldn’t hold on to the baseball.

You have to like what Morales has given the Red Sox in just his third start after 22 appearances out of the bullpen.

Once again, he showed great life on his fastball as he averaged almost 94 mph for the night. The best part though he continued to show great command and location of all of his pitches. He did miss the zone later in the game as he ventured into uncharted waters with his pitch count but overall there’s nothing bad you can say about his outing.

In his three starts now since coming out of the bullpen, he has allowed 14 earned runs on 18 hits and three walks while striking out an astounding 24 batters.

Yes those numbers haven’t come against the best of offenses in the league. The thing is though that Morales was doing this out of the bullpen as well. With him starting now, we getting a bigger sample size of what he can do.

I know manager Bobby Valentine said before the game that he was going with a six-man rotation until the All-Star break but you’d have to think that Morales will be a part of the rotation going forward. He’s definitely earned it.

If you were going to say there was a winner in the Red Sox lineup last night, you’d probably go with Mike Aviles. But that’s because he was the only member of the starting nine not to be struck out by Hernandez. King Felix got Ryan Kalish three times, Dustin Pedroia, Will Middlebrooks and Cody Ross two times while striking out Daniel Nava, David Ortiz, Adrian Gonzalez and Salty once.

Hits were few and far between off of Hernandez as well as the Sox managed just five on the night, all singles. Those came off the bats of Nava, Big Papi, Salty, Gonzo and Aviles.

When the Red Sox had the opportunities, they weren’t able to take advantage. Their best one came in the 9th.

Big Papi reached on a one-out single and went to second on a Salty walk. Brent Lillibridge came into pinch run for Big Papi and second. But Michael Saunders robbed Gonzo of extra bases and at least one Red Sox run maybe two as the runners were off on the 3-2 pitch. That could have ended up costing the Red Sox because the runners were off on the pitch, they couldn’t tag up. It wouldn’t matter though as Middlebrooks popped out setting the stage for Jaso in the 9th.

Definitely a tough way to lose last night (early this morning really) for the Red Sox. You really hate to see an effort like the one of Morales wasted. But that’s the game of baseball. All we can do now is hope they come out and win later tonight.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

UConn’s Andre Drummond, Jeremy Lamb Taken In First Round of 2012 NBA Draft

Andre Drummond (L), Jeremy Lamb (R)

Two former UConn Huskies men’s basketball players saw themselves taken in the first round of the 2012 NBA Draft on Thursday night in Newark, NJ.

Here’s the release from UConn:

NEWARK, N.J. – Andre Drummond and Jeremy Lamb joined the growing list of first-round NBA draft choices from the University of Connecticut when both were among the top 12 selections in the 2012 NBA Draft, held Thursday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Drummond (Middletown, Conn.), UConn’s 6-11 starting center last season, was taken by the Detroit Pistons with the No. 9 overall pick. Lamb (Norcross, Ga.), a 6-5 shooting guard who was the Huskies’ leading scorer last year, was selected with the No. 12 overall pick by the Houston Rockets.

The UConn duo become the 17th and 18th first-round picks from UConn and the Huskies’ 12th and 13th lottery picks, all under 26-year head coach Jim Calhoun. They are the 14th and 15th UConn players to leave school early for the NBA Draft and all but one of those were first-round selections. Overall, UConn has had 39 players drafted by the NBA, 27 of them under Calhoun since Cliff Robinson in 1989.

Thursday’s draft marked the third time that UConn has had two players drafted among the lottery picks in the same year. Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon were drafted Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, in the 2004 draft, while Rudy Gay and Hilton Armstrong were selected No. 8 and 12, respectively, in 2006. UConn has had multiple players drafted in six different NBA Drafts.

Drummond, 18, a BIG EAST All-Rookie Team selection last year, started 30 games for the Huskies, averaging 10.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game, and shooting a team-leading 53.8 percent. He was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week four times while recording 10 double-doubles, a UConn freshman record. He is the only UConn player to enter the NBA Draft after only one season in Storrs.

Lamb, 20, was an All-BIG EAST first team selection and an honorable mention All-American as a sophomore last season after averaging 17.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and shooting 47.8 percent as the Huskies’ top three-point threat. He scored 20 or more points in 10 games last year and 30 or more twice.

As a freshman, Lamb was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team, the NCAA West Region All-Tournament Team, and the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team as he helped UConn produce a thrilling 11-game postseason winning streak to capture the Big East tourney title and the  NCAA national championship.
