Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 4/17

Colby Lewis (L), Jon Lester (R)

After taking three-of-four from the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox welcome the two-time defending American League champions the Texas Rangers to historic Fenway Park for a two-game set.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Rangers television market, you can catch the game on Fox Sports Southwest. And if you don’t live in either market, you can watch the game on the MLB Network. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Jon Lester makes his third start of the season for the outspoken Bobby Valentine. In his previous two starts, Lester is 0-1 with a 2.40 ERA. In his only start against the Rangers in 2011 on Opening Day, he picked up a no decision after allowing five runs in 5.1 IP. He’s made eight career starts against them and is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA.

Colby Lewis also is making his third start of the season. In his previous starts, Lewis is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA. He faced the Red Sox three times in 2011 and was 1-2 with an 8.22 ERA. Overall in his career, he’s made 11 appearances (seven starts) and is 2-3 with a 5.01 ERA. Lewis has made four appearances (three starts) at the Fens and is 1-1 with a 6.48 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/17

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine looks out of from the dugout during their 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston Monday, April 16, 2012. Valentine questioned Kevin Youkilis' commitment to the game in his weekly television interview, then apologized to the Boston third baseman on Monday.

Bobby Valentine really didn’t have a good day in his first Patriot’s Day game as the manager of the Boston Red Sox.

It started out with him trying to explain his comments about the heart of Kevin Youkilis that he had made on Sunday night as well as an apology to Youk. The day ended with him telling the media as to why he left Daniel Bard out there a little too long as it had cost them the game in a 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

The one thing I think everyone dislikes about Valentine is that he likes to be in the spotlight. It’s a far cry from the days of Terry Francona.

To me, it seems like Valentine doesn’t think before speaking. Sure the words he said about Youk may not have come out the way he wanted but he said them. And now he has to live with the fallout.

He definitely didn’t endear himself to any one on the 25-man roster and now how are they to expect their manager to have their back if they are slumping or going through a rough patch.

There are two sides to the Bard situation.

First, it’s letting a young pitcher with a high pitch count try to work out of a jam he created. Secondly, it’s an opportunity for Bard to get that experience in a situation like that so he can use it in future games.

It’s hard not to fault the logic either way as it makes perfect sense to someone in the baseball world. But to the common fan, it’s just Valentine’s second huge mistake of the day. And for me, who spent almost a decade in the baseball world, I have to agree with the thinking of Valentine (yes it hurt me to say that).

In the end though it hurt Bard and the Red Sox as it turned out that the run he walked in would be the only run of the afternoon.

If we take out the fact that Bard walked seven guys, his line would have been spectacular for someone making just their second big league start. He would end up allowing just four hits over 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven and walking the seven guys.

It’s obvious that Bard needs to work on his command. He did possess a nasty slider and his other pitches looked good for the most part.

I think what it boils down to for me is that it was a learning experience for both Valentine and Bard. Bard now knows what it’s like to pitch really fatigued as a starter both physically and emotionally while Valentine learned not to second guess his gut.

Offensively the Red Sox weren’t able to do much against James Shields. They would manage just four hits on the afternoon against him with Cody Ross leading the way with two hits. Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez had the others.

After the 1-5 start, things definitely are looking a lot better for the Red Sox. Hopefully Valentine will keep his mouth shut about the players before he completely loses the clubhouse. If he does that, I think everything will work out fine for the club.

We’ll be back later on today with this evening’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

2012 UConn Football Spring Game Honorary Coaches Announced

With the 2012 UConn Huskies football team’s spring game coming up on Saturday afternoon, the program has announced the four “honorary coaches” for the game. Don’t forget, you can watch the game live on SNY or listen to it online or your AM dial at WTIC 1080 AM.

STORRS, Conn. — Four former University of Connecticut captains will serve as “Honorary Coaches” for the 2012 UConn Blue vs. White Spring Football game on Saturday, April 21 at Rentschler Field. Kickoff will be at 1:00 p.m. and admission and parking are free.

UConn Huskies footballThe Blue Coaches will be 1967 captain Roy Lawrence and 1969 captain Tony Casarella while the White Coaches will be 1981 co-captains Ken Swetizer and Dewey Raymond.

Lawrence played on the offensive line for the Huskies from 1965-67 and was named to UConn’s 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1998. He was an All-Yankee Conference pick in 1967. In addition to his offensive line duties, he also excelled as a kicker and, in 1966, he booted a 50-yard field goal – the longest in New England history at the time. He is a native of Islam, N.J., and had a long career as a teacher in the Columbia (Conn.) school system.

Casarella moved positions during his Husky career from 1967-69 as he was a fullback in high school and later moved to tight end as a sophomore in college, a defensive tackle as a junior and a center as senior. He is a native of Harrison, N.Y., and is a retired math teacher at Rockville (Conn.) High School.

Sweitzer is one of the most successful quarterbacks in UConn history as he was an Honorable Mention All-America pick in 1980 and ’81 and was the 1981 Yankee Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He remains fourth in school history in total offense and fourth in passing yardage. He was named to UConn’s 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1998. Sweitzer was also an All-Yankee Conference and All-ECAC punter and started his Husky career as a wide receiver before switching to quarterback as a junior. He is currently the owner of Sweitzer Insurance, LLC., in his native Madison.

Raymond lettered for the Huskies from 1979-81 as a defensive lineman. He was a second team All-Yankee Conference pick as a junior in 1980. He is a native of Norwalk, Conn., and currently serves as an Associate Director of Development for The UConn Foundation.

Tiffany Hayes Taken By Atlanta Dream In Second Round of 2012 WNBA Draft

The UConn Huskies women’s basketball program’s streak of four straight players taken in the WNBA Draft ended on Monday afternoon. The good news though is that Tiffany Hayes was selected by the Atlanta Dream with the second pick in the second round (14th overall).

Here’s the release from UConn:

STORRS, Conn. – University of Connecticut senior guard Tiffany Hayes has been selected by the Atlanta Dream as the No. 14 pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft on Monday afternoon at ESPN Studios in Bristol, Conn.

UConn's Tiffany Hayes shoots for two of her 10 points over Penn State's Nikki Greene in the second half of their NCAA Sweet 16 game at the Ryan Center at the University of Rhode Island.Hayes is the 26th Husky to play in the league since the WNBA’s inception in 1997. UConn has now had a player selected in the WNBA Draft 13 times in the past 15 years. Connecticut did not have any seniors on its roster in 2003 or 2007. This marks the first time in five years that a Husky has not been selected in the first round of the WNBA Draft.

The Lakeland, Fla. native finished her decorated career with a 147-7 record as a Husky. Hayes’ senior campaign was her best as she averaged 14.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Playing in 30.2 minutes per game, the senior led the squad in steals and was second in scoring and rebounding. Hayes tallied 23 twenty-plus performances in her career, including scoring 30 or more points three times in the 2011-12 season.

While at UConn, Hayes won two national championships, played in four Final Fours, was a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team member, was selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the 2012 Kingston Regional and was named Associated Press Third Team All-American in her senior campaign.
