Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 7/31

Justin Verlander (L), Josh Beckett (R)

After taking the first game 7-3 last night, the Boston Red Sox look to take the series tonight in the second game of a three-game set with the Detroit Tigers at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Tigers television market, you can catch the game on FOX Sports Detroit. And if you don’t live in either market you’re in luck as the MLB Network will have coverage of the game (not in Red Sox and Tigers television markets). If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Josh Beckett looks to turn his season around in his 18th start of 2012. In his previous 17 starts, Beckett is 5-9 with a 4.57 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Tigers this season and is 0-2 with a 8.49 ERA (11 ER/11.2 IP). Beckett has made eight career starts against the Tigers and is 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA. Four of those starts have come at the Fens and he is 1-2 with a 4.15 ERA.

Justin Verlander will toe the rubber for the 22nd time this season. In his previous 21 starts, Verlander is 11-6 with a 2.60 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Red Sox in 2012 and is 0-1 with a 3.21 ERA (5 ER/14 IP). Verlander has made nine career starts against the Red Sox and is 3-3 with a 3.22 ERA. Six of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 2-2 with a 3.80 ERA.

Red Sox Acquire Craig Breslow From DBacks For Albers, Podsednik

A member of the Boston Red Sox in 2006 will be coming back to Boston for the rest of 2012 and probably 2013.

Craig BreslowAccording to multiple reports, the Red Sox have acquired LHP Craig Breslow from the Arizona Diamondbacks for reliever Matt Albers and outfielder Scott Podsednik.

Breslow has made 40 appearances for the DBacks and is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA this season. He is in his second year of arbitration and will be a free agent after the 2013 season.

As a member of the Red Sox in 2006, he was 0-2 with a 3.75 ERA in 13 appearances.

The acquisition of Breslow gives the Red Sox another lefty in the bullpen to join Franklin Morales. It also gives them a little extra insurance in case they want to put Morales back in the rotation.

Albers has made 40 appearances this season and is 2-0 with a 2.29 ERA. Overall in two seasons with the Red Sox, Albers was 6-4 with a 3.81 ERA in 96 appearances. Podsednik made 19 appearances for the Red Sox this season and hit .387 with one home run, seven RBIs and six stolen bases.

Red Sox News & Notes – 7/31

Dustin Pedroia #15 of the Boston Red Sox is congratulated by teammates in the dugout after hitting a two run home run against the Detroit Tigers in the sixth inning during the game on July 30, 2012 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

The so called “aces” of the Boston Red Sox, Jon Lester and Josh Beckett, have combined for 10 wins this season. Daniel Bard, who was banished to Triple-A, has the same amount of wins this season as that duo (5).

Felix Doubront has stepped up but as a rookie hasn’t earned ace status. Plus he’s a middle of the rotation guy at best.

Last night’s starting pitcher for the Red Sox though has the pedigree to be an ace. Including last night’s 7-3 win over the Detroit Tigers, the Red Sox are 7-1 in the last games in which Clay Buchholz has started.

Buchholz did get off to a somewhat slow start, at least ERA wise. Even as he was giving up runs, the Red Sox were scoring them for him. If it weren’t for the battle with esophagitis, there’s no doubt in my mind he’d be leading the Red Sox in wins right now. When he’s on the mound, the Red Sox seem to have more confidence as a team.

He did get roughed up to start the game as Austin Jackson led off with a solo home run. And after Quintin Berry followed that with a double, he set down the next six batters he faced. He was tagged for another run in the 3rd inning when Miguel Cabrera singled in Omar Infante who had tripled to lead off the inning.

The final run the Tigers would score was an unearned run in the 7th. Brennan Boesch reached on a Kelly Shoppach throwing error after Buchholz had struck him out. He came around to score on an Alex Avila double to deep center.

Buchholz went eight innings last night, allowing the three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks. He struck out four along the way to his ninth win of 2012.

This is the second time in his last three starts that he’s gone eight innings and it’s the sixth time in his last eight starts that he’s gone at least seven innings. His ERA, once at a high of 9.09, stands at 4.75.

The offense picked him up after he allowed the home run to Jackson in the 1st.

Jacoby Ellsbury worked a leadoff walk off of Tigers starter Max Scherzer and came around to score on a Carl Crawford triple. Dustin Pedroia brought in Crawford with a RBI groundout.

It was Pedroia who put the Red Sox out front for good in the 6th when the Red Sox took advantage again of a leadoff walk. Crawford worked a walk and then Pedroia, on a 1-2 count, put the Scherzer offering into the first row of seats on the Green Monster. They would chase Scherzer in the 7th when Ellsbury singled in Shoppach, who had tripled to lead off the inning.

Will Middlebrooks gave the Red Sox some insurance runs in the 8th with a mammoth home run to left that rattled off the light poles above the Green Monster.

It’s the third straight win for the Red Sox who are right now playing like the team they are capable of being. They need to continue that though and not fall back into the rut that’s plagued them all season where they get hot, then go cold.

Otherwise, there will be no chance of making the playoffs.

With the trade deadline just over six hours away, it’s going to be interesting to see what the Red Sox do or don’t do. It wouldn’t surprise me if Ben Cherington didn’t make a move and kept the team together.

We’ll be back later on today with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

2012 Big East Football Preseason Media Poll

The Big East Conference is holding it’s annual Media Day once again in Newport, RI and they kicked off the festivities on Tuesday by announcing the 2012 Big East Football Preseason Media Poll.

Big East FootballOur UConn Huskies football team has been picked to finish 6th in the eight team league. The Louisville Cardinals are predicted to win the conference.

Given that the Huskies are in the same predicament as last year with no starting QB yet, this is a not a surprise. However, I do think UConn might sneak up on some teams this year given the strength of their defense.

And if Lyle McCombs can carry over the success from his freshman campaign running the ball, there’s no telling how far the Huskies can go this season.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 7/30

Max Scherzer (L), Clay Buchholz (R)

After taking two-of-three in the Bronx, the Boston Red Sox return home to historic Fenway Park for a 10-game homestand. Tonight, they’ll kick it off with the first game of a three-game set with the Detroit Tigers.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Tigers television market, you can catch the game on FOX Sports Detroit. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Clay Buchholz looks to keep the good times rolling in his 18th start of 2012. In his previous 17 starts, Buchholz is 8-3 with a 4.93 ERA. He has faced the Tigers once this year and picked up a no decision back on April 8th after allowing seven runs in four innings of work. Buchholz has made seven career starts against Detroit and is 1-1 with a 3.83 ERA.  Three of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 0-1 with a 0.82 ERA (2 ER/22 IP).

Max Scherzer steps on the slab for the 21st time in 2012. In his previous 20 starts, Scherzer is 10-5 with a 4.49 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Red Sox in 2012 and is 1-0 with a 10.38 ERA (10 ER/8.2 IP). Scherzer has made five career starts against the local nine and is 1-2 with a 9.82 ERA. Two of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA (4 ER/12.1 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 7/30

NY Post and Boston Herald sports covers for Monday, July 30, 2012

Pedro! Pedro! Pedro! Certainly if the Boston Red Sox were playing at home last night instead of Yankee Stadium that would have been the chant going on. And if you’re the New York Yankees you probably don’t want to see Pedro Ciriaco anytime soon.

For the second straight night, Ciriaco delivered the big hit as his bloop single in the 10th gave the Red Sox a 3-2 lead and the win.

David Robertson started the 10th for the Yanks by walking Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Will Middlebrooks attempted to bunt him over but was hit with the pitch as he tried the bunt. Despite Middlebrooks showing the ump where he was hit, it was ruled a foul ball. Bobby Valentine came out to argue and was promptly ejected. Moments later, Josh Beckett was ejected as well for arguing from the dugout. WMB ended up with a single a few pitches later.

Ryan Sweeney followed that with a fielder’s choice that saw WMB retired at second but with Salty getting to third. With the Yankees infield draw in, Ciriaco was able to get one just over the infield to bring in Salty with the eventual winning run.

Russell Martin proved to be the killer to the Red Sox pitching staff last night.

He provided both of the runs for the Yankees. He hit a solo home run in the 7th off of Felix Doubront and then gave Alfredo Aceves the blown save in the 8th when he singled in Andruw Jones who had doubled off of Andrew Miller.

Despite five walks, Doubront continued to dominate the Yankees, the same team he basically earned the starting nod against during spring training. Of the four hits he allowed, three of them were infield singles. He picked up a whopping 15 swings-and-misses on his fastball, curveball and changeup.

While he did struggle with his location at times, it was nice to see him battle through when he did get in trouble. Every start he makes, he’s entering uncharted territory for himself as this is the most innings he’s thrown in the big leagues.

But he’s also one of the big reasons the Red Sox are where they are today as his 10 wins lead the staff.

Offensively, Sweeney provided the first two runs of the game with a two-run double off of Hiroki Kuroda in the 2nd inning. Adrian Gonzalez continues to swing a hot stick as he added two more hits as did Jacoby Ellsbury.

Obviously this weekend didn’t provide an answer to whether the Red Sox are contenders or pretenders, buyers or sellers. But what it did show is that this team can battle back when in a hole. And if they can continue to do that over two plus months of the season, there’s no reason why we can’t see them playing in the wild card play-in game at the very least.

Of course we’ll be watching the rumor mill just like you over the next two days to see what/if the Red Sox are going to do.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take a look at the overnight links from the media.
