Her resume also includes being a member of the coaching staff that helped guide the Huskies to their first of seven NCAA National Championships.

In addition to his role on SNY, Andrew has worked three Olympics for NBC – including London – as well as tennis at Wimbledon.  Andrew’s other play-by-play experience includes NFL games on CBS, NBC and WKYC.  Andrew worked for CBS at the 2011 & 2012 Masters – doing play-by-play for the featured group channel. Worcester Sharks 2, Connecticut Whale 1

Worcester, MA, October 4, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale fell to 0-2 in the preseason Thursday night, as they lost to the Worcester Sharks by a score of 2-1, at the Hart Center on the campus of the College of the Holy Cross.

CT WhaleBrandon Mashinter’s third-period goal was the game-winner for the Sharks, and Sena Acolatse also scored for Worcester.  Sebastien Piche had the only Whale goal.

After a scoreless first period, in which Worcester outshot the Whale 10-4, the Sharks jumped on top at 4:45 of the second frame, just as Connecticut’s Andrew Courtney was stepping out of the penalty box.  The Sharks’ Yanni Gourde worked the puck out of the right-wing corner to Acolatse at the middle of the blue line, and Acolatse fired a slap shot past the stick side of Whale starting goaltender Scott Stajcer.

After the Whale’s Ryan Bourque missed the net on a shorthanded partial breakaway at 10:45, Connecticut tied the game on its fourth power play at 18:58.  Piche, a defenseman, was credited with the goal, after his shot from the left point hit a Worcester defender and deflected past Shark starting goaltender Alex Stalock.

Worcester regained the lead just before the halfway point of the third period, as Mashinter scored on a rebound at 9:53.  Kyle Rank, who replaced Stajcer in the Whale net at 12:14 of the second, made a pad save on a shot by Mikael Tam off of a 3-on-2, but Mashinter found the carom in the left circle and buried the puck for a 2-1 Shark lead, and, as it would turn out, the win.

Thomas Heemskerk played a perfect third for Worcester, stopping seven shots, after Stalock made 16 saves through the first two periods.  Stajcer made 21 stops for the Whale and Rank had 13.

The Whale had opened its preseason with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Albany Devils Wednesday night, at Champions Skating Center in Cromwell, CT.  The Whale’s only other home preseason game is this Sunday, October 7, as they and the Sharks rematch at the Koeppel Community Sports Center on the campus of Trinity College.  That game faces off at 2:00 PM.

Red Sox Get Sands, De La Rosa From Dodgers

When the Boston Red Sox made the big deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers we knew they were going to get five players. But we also knew that two of them wouldn’t join the Red Sox until the season is over.

Well now that the miserable 2012 season for the Red Sox is over, they have now received the two players-to-be-named later from the Dodgers.

Here’s the release from the Red Sox:

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today acquired right-handed pitcher Rubby De La Rosa and first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands from the Los Angeles Dodgers, completing the August 25 trade that sent right-handed pitcher Josh Beckett, outfielder Carl Crawford, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and infielder Nick Punto to the Dodgers in exchange for first baseman James Loney, infielder Ivan De Jesus Jr. and right-handed pitcher Allen Webster.  To make room on the 40-man roster, catcher Guillermo Quiroz was designated for a assignment.

Boston Red SoxThe announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.

De La Rosa, 23, tallied an 11-9 record with six saves, a 2.86 ERA (74 ER/233.0 IP), 237 strikeouts and just 187 hits allowed in 59 career minor league appearances (39 starts) over six seasons in the Dodgers system, and earned the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year award in 2010.  Signed by Los Angeles as an international free agent in July 2007, the right-hander made his Major League debut with the club in 2011 and posted a 4-5 record with a 3.71 ERA (25 ER/60.2 IP) and 60 strikeouts over 13 games (10 starts).  After beginning the 2012 season on the disabled list recovering from Tommy John surgery underwent on August 9, 2011, he made one Major League appearance for Los Angeles in August and compiled a 1-0 record with a 2.08 ERA (3 ER/13.0 IP) and 12 strikeouts in six minor league outings, including five on rehab, between the Rookie-level Arizona League Dodgers, High-A Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Chattanooga.

The 25-year-old Sands spent most of 2012 with the Dodgers Triple-A Albuquerque affiliate and was named to the Pacific Coast League’s Postseason All-Star Team.  This season, he led all Triple-A batters with 107 RBI and finished third in the PCL with 26 home runs while also tallying 17 doubles, four triples, 84 runs scored and 59 walks in 119 games.  The right-handed batter hit .383 (51-for-133) with a minor league-leading 46 RBI over his last 34 regular season games with Albuquerque.  In five postseason contests for the Isotopes he hit .381 (8-for-21) with a double, a homer and seven RBI.  Sands also appeared in nine Major League games over two stints with the Dodgers this year and in 70 career Big League tilts, all with Los Angeles over the last two seasons, he has hit .244 (54-for-221) with 17 doubles, four homers, 27 RBI, 22 runs and 26 walks.  Selected by the Dodgers in the 25th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, Sands is a career .289 hitter (502-for-1,737) with 86 doubles, 16 triples, 119 home runs, 379 RBI, 356 runs, 236 walks and 28 stolen bases in 469 minor league games in the Dodgers system.

Quiroz, 30, was acquired from the Seattle Mariners on September 4 and appeared in two games for the Red Sox this season, going 0-for-2 at the plate.  He began the season with Seattle’s Triple-A club in Tacoma, batting .278 (84-for-302) with 15 doubles, a triple, 15 home runs, 52 RBI, 45 runs scored and 36 walks in 89 games.  Originally signed by Toronto in 1998, the right-handed batter has played in 103 career Major League games with the Blue Jays (2004-05), Mariners (2006, 2009-10), Rangers (2007), Orioles (2008) and Red Sox (2012), going 53-for-257 (.206) with 11 doubles, two homers, 28 RBI, 19 runs scored and 17 walks.

CT WhaleFlanigan, 24, got his first taste of pro hockey at the end of the 2011-12 season, skating in four AHL games with the Hamilton Bulldogs.  The 6-1, 180-pound Rochester, NY native contributed a goal and an assist for two points, and registered four penalty minutes, with the Bulldogs, after finishing a four-year Hockey East career at Merrimack College.  In 36 games with Merrimack last season, Flanigan scored 11 goals and added 18 assists for 29 points, good for tops on the team in both points and assists.  He also served 42 minutes in penalties.

Red Sox Fire Bobby Valentine

Manager Bobby Valentine #25 of the Boston Red Sox walks back to the dugout after checking on Jon Lester during the game against the New York Yankees on October 2, 2012 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx borough of New York City.

I know everybody knows this already but since I’ve been preoccupied with some personal stuff all day, I’m just getting around to this now.

We can all rejoice. Bobby V has been canned. Thrown out to the trash.

Here’s the release from the Boston Red Sox:

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today announced, following a meeting among team leaders and Manager Bobby Valentine, that Bobby will not return in 2013.   A search for a new manager will begin immediately.

“Our 2012 season was disappointing for many reasons,” said Executive Vice-President/General Manager Ben Cherington, who made the announcement and who will lead the search.  “No single issue is the reason, and no single individual is to blame.  We’ve been making personnel changes since August, and we will continue to do so as we build a contending club.  With an historic number of injuries, Bobby was dealt a difficult hand.  He did the best he could under seriously adverse circumstances, and I am thankful to him.”

The Red Sox used 56 players in 2012, the most in club history. Their 9-player blockbuster trade August 25 with the Los Angeles Dodgers was their largest in 40 years.

“This year’s won-loss record reflects a season of agony,” said Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino.  “It begs for changes, some of which have already transpired.  More will come.  We are determined to fix that which is broken and return the Red Sox to the level of success we have experienced over the past decade.

“Difficult as it is to judge a manager amid a season that had an epidemic of injuries, we feel we need to make changes.  Bobby leaves the Red Sox’ manager’s office with our respect, gratitude, and affection.  I have no doubt that he will continue to contribute to the game he loves so much and knows so well.”

Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner said, “This season was by far the worst we have experienced in over ten years here.  Ultimately, we are all collectively responsible for the team’s performance.  We are going to be working tirelessly to reconstruct the ballclub for 2013.  We’ll be back.

“We thank Bobby for the many contributions he made and for the energy he brought each day.  He is a baseball man through and through.”

Red Sox Principal Owner John Henry said, “In our meeting with Bobby today, he handled everything with dignity and class, and it is deeply appreciated. Ultimately, we as owners are responsible for arming our organization with the resources — intellectual, physical, and financial — to return to the levels of competitiveness to which we aspire and to which our fans are accustomed.  Our commitment to winning is unwavering.  It is a commitment to this team, to this city, and to these fans who have supported us through thick and thin.

“We have confidence in Ben Cherington and the kind of baseball organization he is determined to build.”

“I understand this decision,” said Valentine.  “This year in Boston has been an incredible experience for me, but I am as disappointed in the results as are ownership and the great fans of Red Sox Nation.

“It was a privilege to be part of the 100 year anniversary of Fenway Park and an honor to be in uniform with such great players and coaches.  My best to the organization.  I’m sure next year will be a turnaround year.”

Notes from this week’s opponent Rutgers:

Here is video of Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood’s press conference.

Kyle Flood is in his first year as the head coach at Rutgers and is in his first year as a collegiate head coach. He had served on the Rutgers staff for the previous seven seasons and also had assistant coaching stints at C.W. Post (1995-96), Hofstra (1997-2001), Delaware (2002-05). He was part of the coaching staff that led the Blue Hens to the 2003 NCAA FCS Championship. Flood is a 1993 Iona College graduate. The last time Rutgers promoted an assistant coach on staff to the head coaching position was the naming of Frank Burns to replace John Bateman in 1973 — and Burns became the winningest coach in school history.

Rutgers will debut its new black uniforms Saturday as all fans in the stadium are asked to wear black for a stadium blackout vs. the Huskies.

Rutgers hasn’t been ranked in both polls since September 30, 2007.

With a win:

  • Rutgers would win a game as a ranked team for the first time since 2007.
  • Start the season 5-0 for the seventh time in 143 seasons of college football.
  • Kyle Flood would become the second coach in school history to start 5-0. The only first-year RU head coach to begin 5-0 was John Bateman in 1960. Bateman guided the Scarlet Knights to an 8-1 record, including wins in his first five games as head coach.

Rutgers is 81-91-2 all-time against current members of the BIG EAST.

Rutgers looks to become 2-0 in the BIG EAST for only the third time since the BIG EAST began play in 1991. The only other years RU started 2-0 in conference play was 2011 (19-16 2OT win at Syracuse; 34-10 win vs. Pitt) and 2006 (22-20 win at USF; 20-10 win at Pitt).

The Scarlet Knights are 9-12 all-time in BIG EAST home openers, including victories in each of the last two years in conference home openers.

Rutgers is the only team in the nation to win three road games in the month of September in 2012.

Former Rutgers head coach and player Frank Robert Burns passed away on July 14, 2012. In 2012, every Scarlet Knight will wear a “FRB” sticker on their helmet in honor of Burns.

Red Sox News & Notes – 10/4

Boston Herald and NY Daily News sports covers for October 4, 2012

Our long standing New England nightmare is over. Wait, you mean Bobby Valentine hasn’t been fired as of 9:55 a.m.? Okay then.

One of our long standing New England nightmares is over. The 2012 season has finally come to a close for the Boston Red Sox after the New York Yankees bent them over their knee last night and spanked the crap out of them to clinch the AL East.

The Red Sox as a team hadn’t lost at least 90 games since 1966 when they were 72-90. They topped that mark this season going 69-93.

We can all sit back and make excuses for what happened. The injuries, the trade, the fact that Valentine is an idiot, Ben Cherington didn’t do enough, ownership cares more about Liverpool.

Forgot the excuses, what we should be talking about is what’s going to be done to fix this team to get back into the playoffs.

The trade of Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez freed up a ton of payroll for the Red Sox. But the free agent class, sans Josh Hamilton, isn’t all that special.

The Red Sox need starting pitching, a first baseman, an outfielder or two and some bullpen help. We know they’re going to try and re-sign David Ortiz and Cody Ross.

But even if they do re-sign them, that doesn’t even crack the surface of what needs to be done.

While last year’s offseason was a crazy one for the Red Sox because of what happened, this one is shaping up to be even more crazier. It will defintely be worth following closely.
