Connecticut Whale 2, Worcester Sharks 1

Worcester, MA, November 17, 2012 – Chris Kreider and Ryan Bourque scored goals 1:17 apart in the third period Saturday night at the DCU Center, to erase a 1-0 deficit and give the Connecticut Whale a 2-1 win over the Worcester Sharks.

CT WhaleCam Talbot made 23 saves in the Whale net in the victory, which snapped a two-game Connecticut losing streak.  Brodie Reid scored the only Worcester goal, and Alex Stalock made 21 stops for the Sharks.

The first period was tightly played and scoreless until the 17:29 mark, when Reid, playing his first game of the season, scored to give Worcester a 1-0 lead.  Reid tracked down a bouncing puck near the blue line and moved down left wing, before snapping a shot through Whale defenseman Matt Gilroy’s legs and past Talbot’s catching glove side.

The Whale pushed back strongly after that goal, but were unable to get anything by Stalock, despite several good chances.

Both goaltenders had to make some sparkling saves in a scoreless second period, which included the Whale’s Chad Kolarik hitting the goalpost on Stalock’s glove side twice in one shift around the 13-minute mark.

The Whale finally broke through against Stalock on a power play at 1:40 of the third.  After Worcester was called for having too many men on the ice, Kreider flipped in a rebound only four seconds into the man advantage.  Kyle Jean won a draw back to Gilroy at the point, and Stalock stopped Gilroy’s shots with his pads but could not control the puck.

Then, at 2:57, Bourque scored an unassisted goal that turned out to be the game-winner.  Worcester’s Travis Oleksuk dropped the puck behind his own net to Taylor Doherty, who lost control to Bourque.  Bourque reversed his field and stepped out to the left of a surprised Stalock, slipping the puck just inside the goalpost.

It was the second straight Saturday night that the Whale won in Worcester, after Connecticut skated off with a 6-2 road win against the Sharks the previous Saturday.

The Whale (6-7-1-0, 13 pts.) are now off until this Friday night, when they will travel to Bridgeport for a Nutmeg-State battle with the Sound Tigers.  That game faces off at 7:00 PM, and the play-by-play can be heard live on “Beethoven Radio” AM 1290, and on-line at www.ctwhale.com

The Whale’s next home game is next Saturday, November 24 vs. the defending Calder Cup-champion Norfolk Admirals, and fans can enjoy a doubleheader of hockey action that day at the XL Center.  Prior to Whale vs. Admirals at 7:00, the UConn Men’s Hockey Huskies will take on Air Force in an NCAA Division I hockey battle.  That game faces off at 3:30, and one ticket is good for both the college game and the Whale game.  The XL Center will serve as UConn’s home ice for Hockey East contests when the Men’s Huskies join the nation’s most prestigious conference in 2014-15.

Tickets for all Whale regular season home games at the XL Center are on sale now at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, through TicketMaster Charge-by-Phone at 1-800-745-3000 and on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.

Portland Pirates 2, Connecticut Whale 1

By Wil Goldsholl

Hartford, CT, November 16, 2012 – Alexandre Bolduc and Chris Brown scored third-period goals for the Portland Pirates Friday night against the Connecticut Whale, and former Whale Chad Johnson made 29 saves, in a 2-1 Portland victory at the XL Center.

CT WhaleBrandon Segal scored the only Whale goal, with only 36 seconds left in the third period, and Johnson’s former stablemate Cam Talbot had 31 saves in the Connecticut net.

It was busy night for the officials, with the Whale having nine power plays and Portland three, but neither team could capitalize on a man advantage.

Play was one-sided early in Portland’s favor, as all the rubber was being fired Talbot’s way.

Even an interference minor to Brown lead to little Whale offense, as Connecticut produced just one shot on the advantage and seemed unable to find the net in the early goings of the first period.

Marek Hrivik was sent off for holding, and moments after the minor expired Portland cranked a shot off the pipe.

The Whale replied with a near-miss of their own when Johnson’s outstretched glove stopped a backdoor play on the goal line to Sean Collins.

Brown and Michael Haley dropped the gloves with just under five minutes to play in the first period and the teams brought the scoreless tie into the break. Portland led in shots, 13-8.

At the 5:53 mark of the second period, the Pirates’ Joel Rechlicz was called for interference behind the Portland net. Things got chippy after a shoving match and Haley fought again, this time with Scott Arnold, who immediately went to the tunnel to get patched up. Arnold would later return.

Talbot made a tremendous kick save on Jordan Szwarz’ breakaway with seven minutes to play in the period.

A Connecticut 5-on-3 with three minutes left was the Whale’s best puck movement of the night, but a number of blocked shots kept the puck away from Johnson.

The third period started scoreless, but it took just two minutes for Portland to find the goal. A pass came from Szwarz down the half-boards to Ethan Werek, who fed it behind to Bolduc. Bolduc shoved it towards the crease from the end boards and it snuck off Talbot’s skate and in.

Bolduc took a tripping minor a minute later and the Whale saw chances but Johnson made quality stops, and the Portland defense continued to block shots. The third period was the only period the Whale earned a shot advantage.

After the Whale failed to convert on the man advantage, Brown made it 2-0 for the Pirates at the midway mark of the third after Brendan Shinnimin won a faceoff to the left of Talbot.

Segal found the twine with 36 seconds to play in regulation on a rebound from Gilroy’s shot, but it wasn’t enough to climb back.

The Whales seventh regulation loss of the season dropped Connecticut to 5-7-1-1.

Video: UConn Slips Past Wake Forest 77-71

When now UConn Huskies head coach Kevin Ollie was out there recruiting, I'm beginning to wonder if he told recruits "come to UConn see the world".

2012 Paradise JamThe Huskies started their 2012-13 season in Germany before returning back stateside for a brief time. Now they are in the Virgin Islands at the 2012 Paradise Jam, a tournament they won in 2008.

On Friday night, they had a tough matchup with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the first round of the tournament.

And with a strong second half effort from Shabazz Napier, the Huskies were able to hold off the Demon Deacons for a 77-71 win at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.

No. 23 UConn improves to 3-0 on the season and awaits the winner of the Quinnipiac-Iona game at 9 p.m. on Sunday night. That game will be televised by the CBS Sports Network. Wake Forest falls to 1-1.

Given that Napier didn't score until there was 10 minutes to go in the game, you wouldn't have thought he would have led the team in scoring. He actually tied Ryan Boatright for the team lead with 16 points. Napier added four assists while Boatright led the Huskies with seven rebounds and five assists.

Both DeAndre Daniels and Enosch Wolf had fine games for the Huskies as both finished with 12 points. Wolf also pulled down six rebounds. Not bad for a kid who had barely seen the floor before this season.

Codi Miller-McIntyre led all scorers in the game with 21 points and added five assists for the Demon Deacons. C.J. Haris chipped in with 17 points while Travis McKie added 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

2012 AL & NL MVP Awards

Miguel Cabrera (L), Buster Posey (R)

It's now time to put the finishing touches on the 2012 MLB season as Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) are presenting their 2012 end of the year awards.

On Monday, it was the 2012 American League and National League Rookie of the Year. On Tuesday, it was the 2012 AL and NL Manager of the Year. On Wednesday, it was the 2012 AL and NL Cy Young Awards. And on Thursday, it's their final awards, the 2012 AL and NL MVP Awards.

In the AL, the BBWAA has selected Detroit Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera. And in the NL, they have chosen San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey.

Cabrera, who won the AL Triple Crown, hit .330 with 44 home runs and 139 RBIs in 161 games for the Tigers. He was the first Triple Crown winner since 1967 when Boston Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski won it.

Posey's MVP award caps off a season in which his Giants team won the 2012 World Series. In 148 games, Posey hit .336 with 24 home runs and 103 RBIs.

That's a wrap on the 2012 BBWAA award season. Now we can keep our eyes on the free agent market and of course the trade market.

Five Huskies Tabbed to Naismith Women’s Early Season Watch List

The UConn Huskies women's basketball team has had five of its members selected for the 2012-13 Naismith Trophy Early Season Watch List.

Here's the release:

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s basketball team had five standouts named to the 2012-13 Naismith Women’s Early Season Watch List as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Thursday morning. Stefanie Dolson, Kelly Faris, Bria Hartley, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Breanna Stewart all earned a spot on the early season list. The Huskies led all schools with their five selections.

UConn Huskies women's basketball logoDolson, Hartley and Mosqueda-Lewis were also named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top-30 and the Preseason Wade Watch List, while Hartley and Mosqueda-Lewis were selected as Honorable Mention Preseason All-Americans.

The 50 player watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2012-2013 college basketball season. The Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year presented by AT&T will be awarded on April 8, 2013, in New Orleans, La.

“With so much returning talent this year, anticipation and excitement for women’s college basketball season among fans, players and coaches is extremely high,” said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. “We look forward to watching these student-athletes compete and prove to the nation that they deserve to be recognized as the best women’s college basketball player in 2013.”

In late February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors will compile a mid-season team of the top 30 players in the nation. In March, the Naismith Trophy voting academy will vote to narrow the list to the four finalists.

For more information, visit www.naismithawards.com.

The UConn women’s hoops team will hit the road for the first time of the 2012-13 campaign as they take on No. 16 Texas A&M on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The No. 2 Huskies enter Reed Arena with a 1-0 record after downing the College of Charleston behind Stewart’s 21 points.

Former Husky Darius Butler Named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Cecil Shorts #84 of the Jacksonville Jaguars misses a pass defended by Darius Butler #20 and Antoine Bethea #41 of the Indianapolis Colts during a game at EverBank Field on November 8, 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida.

A very nice honor for former UConn Huskies defensive back Darius Butler who now plays for the Indianapolis Colts.

Here's the release from the Colts:

INDIANAPOLIS —The NFL today announced that Indianapolis Colts cornerback Darius Butler has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 10. This marks the first time Butler has earned the award in his career.

In Butler’s first start of the season, he contributed with two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, and one fumble recovery in a 27-10 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Butler became the first Colt to record three-or-more takeaways in a game since Mike Prior in 1992. Since moving to Indianapolis in 1984, the Colts have had only two other players record three-or-more takeaways in a single game.

The interceptions for Butler were the fourth and fifth of his career and first since 2009. He now holds career totals of 98 tackles (87 solo), 26 passes defensed and five interceptions in 46 games played (15 starts).
