Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3, Connecticut Whale 0

By Wil Goldsholl

Hartford, CT, December 27, 2012 – Kevin Poulin turned away 36 Connecticut Whale shots in Hartford on Thursday to pick up his first shutout of the season, on the way to a 3-0 win for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Bridgeport took both games in this week’s double-header, the first of which was at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport on Wednesday. Connecticut, who has now been shut out five times on the year, went 0 for 7 on the man advantage; they are 1 for 25 in the last five games.

CT WhaleBridgeport struck first, less than two minutes in to the game. Right winger David Ullstrom slid a pass to Matt Watkins. Watkins advanced to the right circle and shoveled a backhand pass allowing Chad Costello to tap it past Cam Talbot on the backdoor for his first goal of the year.

Dylan McIlrath, who made his first appearance of the season, came out with high energy, delivering a hard check on Marc Cantin breaking up the left half boards. He was called for elbowing at 7:49 but said of the check, “There’s no good penalties, of course, but that’s one the boys don’t really mind killing off.” As soon as he emerged from the box, Brett Gallant was there to challenge him and the two dropped the gloves at center ice.

The Whale strung together seven unanswered shots in the middle portion of the first period, including a quickly developed two-on-one where Blake Parlett slid around Matt Donovan and looked to Ryan Bourque cross-crease. Ty Wishart was there to cut the pass off, however.

Bourque drew a tripping call trying to get around Jon Landry with just over five to play, and Chad Kolarik saw a chance to put away a rebound on the ensuing power play following a Christian Thomas wrister.

Connecticut dug themselves into a bit of trouble, as Bridgeport came back on the transition. Kris Newbury was called for hooking and Kolarik earned himself an unsportsmanlike conduct call as Brandon DeFazio broke in on the left wing. Landry came out of the box moments later and the Whale handled the five on three situation.

The Whale nearly got on the board when Poulin came above the circles to play a puck and hit his own defenseman. Kelsey Tessier stepped to the middle and drove the puck from nearly half ice but it would hit the outside of the pipe.

Talbot, who finished with 23 saves on 26 shots, came up with an awkward and timely save late in the period, and Newbury with Kolarik responded with a near-miss of their own, but still could not get the rubber across the goal line.

With 67 seconds to go in the first, Newbury fired the puck towards Poulin on a close offside call, drawing some attention from Bridgeport as well as the referees. He was called for unsportsmanlike conduct as well. Bridgeport took six seconds to convert. Bridgeport captain Colin McDonald won a clean draw and Costello tapped it back to Matt Donovan. Donovan backpedaled to the middle of the point and pulled the trigger to beat Talbot stick side and gain a 2-0 edge before the first intermission.

Early in the second Brandon Segal drew a hooking call on Donovan, but after the penalty expired the Sound Tigers replied. Watkins put the puck to the middle for McDonald who, blindly and backhandedly, fed John Persson. The goal was Persson’s 10th of the year.

Marek Hrivik got chippy with McDonald a few minutes later and Mike Vernace jumped in to give him a hand. McDonald was called for charging and roughing, and Vernace for roughing only. Poulin frustrated the power play yet again, flashing the glove on a Christian Thomas one-timer, then shutting down Newbury on a point blank chance. After the penalty expired Thomas stole the puck on the blueline and broke in nearly alone but the five-hole effort was denied by Poulin with six and a half left in the second.

Jon Landry took two more penalties in the early minutes of the third; one for interfering with Bourque, and another for getting his stick tied up in Tessier’s midsection.

Tommy Grant clipped Poulin behind the net near the midway mark of the third and Brandon DeFazio took exception to that, landing them both in the sin bin. DeFazio took a double minor for roughing. Grant was guilty of the same infraction but served half the time DeFazio did. Chris Kreider would join him in the box moments later to negate the power play on a holding penalty.

While the Whale would see some additional chances in the closing minutes, they still could not get on the board and the 3-0 score would stand.

Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5, Connecticut Whale 2

Bridgeport, CT, December 26, 2012 – Nino Niederreiter scored two goals, and David Ullstrom had a goal and three assists, to lead the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to a 5-2 win over the Connecticut Whale Wednesday night at Webster Bank Arena.

CT WhaleJohan Sundstrom also contributed three assists for Bridgeport, and Casey Cizikas had a pair of helpers.  Marek Hrivik had a goal and an assist for the Whale, and Chad Kolarik had two assists.

It took Bridgeport only 63 seconds to open the scoring, as good early forechecking pressure led to Niederreiter’s first goal, which came on a high shot from the left-wing side of the slot.  Niederreiter scored again from almost the same spot at 7:04, on a rebound after Ullstrom got a couple of tries at a loose puck.

The Bridgeport power play made it a 3-0 advantage at 11:45, as John Persson found Colin McDonald with a pinpoint cross-slot pass and McDonald one-timed the puck in from along the goal line on the left-wing side.

The second period was scoreless until the 18:09 mark, when Matt Watkins scored for Bridgeport off of a goalmouth scramble.  Referee Terry Koharski allowed play to continue for several seconds after the goal judge turned the red light on, but eventually ruled that the puck had gone in the net to the right of Whale goaltender Cam Talbot (24 saves), and the Sound Tigers led 4-0 going into the third.

The Whale broke Bridgeport goaltender Kevin Poulin’s shutout bid 3:43 into the third frame, on Hrivik’s fourth goal of the season.  Mike Vernace’s shot from the left point hit traffic in front of Poulin (25 saves), and Hrivik was able to collect the loose puck and pull it to the backhand and slide it in.

Connecticut cut the lead to 4-2 at 7:07, scoring off of a rush.  Kolarik bore down the slot and fired a low shot that defenseman Blake Parlett, who had joined the attack, deflected underneath Poulin.

The Whale could not eat any further into the Sound Tiger advantage, though, and Ullstrom made the final margin 5-2 by scoring into an empty net as time expired.

The Whale and Sound Tigers complete a home-and-home series Thursday night at the XL Center, with faceoff at 7:00 PM.  Tickets start as low as $10 each ($12 each when purchased on the day of the game) and are available at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, through TicketMaster Charge-by-Phone at 1-800-745-3000 and on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.

Seven Patriots Named to 2013 Pro Bowl

The New England Patriots had seven players named to the 2013 Pro Bowl.

Here's the release:

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Seven members of the New England Patriots have been selected to the AFC Pro Bowl squad.

Pro BowlQuarterback Tom Brady, TE Rob Gronkowski, G Logan Mankins, LB Jerod Mayo, WR Matthew Slater (special teams), WR Wes Welker and DT Vince Wilfork have been selected to represent the New England Patriots and the AFC in the 2013 Pro Bowl on Jan. 27, 2013 at Aloha Stadium in Hawaii.

It is the eighth Pro Bowl selection for Brady (2001, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012) and fifth for Mankins (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012), Welker (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012) and Wilfork (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012).

Gronkowski and Slater earned their second straight Pro Bowl invitations, while Mayo (2010 and 2012) also earned a Pro Bowl berth for the second time.

Gronkowski, Mankins, Mayo and Wilfork were selected as starters.

Brady was named to the Pro Bowl for the eighth time, including four straight seasons. John Hannah (9) is the only Patriots player with more Pro Bowls than Brady. Brady enters the final week of the season with 4,543 yards passing and 32 touchdowns. Brady became just the fifth player in NFL history to reach 4,000 yards in five or more seasons and the fifth player with at least 30 or more touchdown passes in four seasons. Brady needs one touchdown pass in the season finale vs. Miami to extend his streak to 48 straight games with at least one touchdown pass and move past Johnny Unitas (47) for the second longest streak behind Drew Brees (54). He will also become the first NFL player to throw at least one touchdown pass in all 16 games for three consecutive seasons.

Gronkowski is going to his second Pro Bowl. Despite missing the last five games, Gronkowski leads all NFL tight ends with 10 touchdowns on 53 receptions for 748 yards. He is the first tight end in NFL history to have three straight 10-plus touchdown seasons after his 10 in 2010, 18 in 2011 and 10 in 2012. Gronkowski had three 100-yard games in 2012 to increase his career total to nine, tying Ben Coates for the most 100-yard games by a New England tight end.

Mankins is going to his fifth Pro Bowl, including his fourth consecutive. He went to his first Pro Bowl in 2007 when he became the first Patriots guard to earn a Pro Bowl selection since 1985 when Pro Football Hall of Famer John Hannah went to his ninth career Pro Bowl. The Fresno State product is in his eighth season with the Patriots since being selected in the first round (32nd overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft. Since entering the starting lineup in 2005, Mankins has helped the New England offense finish in the Top 10 on offense six times. The 2012 New England offense is currently ranked first in the NFL. Mayo earned his second Pro Bowl honor after being selected for the first time in 2010. Mayo enters the final week of the season with a team-leading 179 total tackles. He is the first Patriots player to start his career with five straight 100-tackle seasons and his five straight 100-tackle seasons are tied with Lawyer Milloy and Vincent Brown for second, behind the six straight 100-tackle seasons by Fred Marion. Mayo has registered 10 or more tackles in 10 of the first 15 games to tie a career-high. He also had ten 10-tackle games in 2010.

Slater is going to his second Pro Bowl. He enters the final week of the season with a team-leading 20 special teams tackles, one behind his career-high of 21 special teams tackles set in 2010. Slater, a Special Teams Captain for the last two seasons, has been a productive member of the Patriots special teams units since joining the team as a fifth round draft pick out of UCLA in 2008. He has led the Patriots in special teams tackles for the past two seasons with 21 in 2010 and 17 in 2011.

Welker has been selected to the Pro Bowl five straight seasons. He enters the final week of the season with 110 receptions for 1,260 yards and five touchdowns. Welker became the first player in NFL history with five 100-catch seasons. Welker also added four 10-catch games in 2012 to set an NFL record with 18-career 10-catch games. He extended his team record with his fifth 1,000-yard season. He also became the Patriots’ all-time leader in receptions, surpassing Troy Brown in Week 2 vs. Arizona.

Wilfork earned his fifth Pro Bowl selection overall and fourth straight Pro Bowl honor. Since being selected in the first round (21st overall) of the 2004 draft out of Miami, Wilfork has helped the Patriots defense finish in the top 10 in points allowed on six occasions (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010). The Patriots own a 106-31 (.774) record in Wilfork’s 137 career regular-season games.

Red Sox Make Drew Deal Official

After Uncle Ben Cherington completed the trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he and the Boston Red Sox made the signing of shortstop Stephen Drew official.

Here's the release from the Red Sox:

The Boston Red Sox today signed shortstop Stephen Drew to a one-year contract through the 2013 season.  A first-round selection of the Diamondbacks in the 2004 draft, Drew has appeared in 812 career Major League games over the last seven seasons with Arizona (2006-12) and Oakland (2012).

Boston Red SoxDrew, 29, is one of three players to have three seasons with at least 20 doubles, 10 triples and 10 home runs since 2008, along with current Red Sox Shane Victorino and Toronto’s Jose Reyes.  He ranks fourth among all Major League shortstops over the last five seasons with a .441 slugging percentage and fifth with a .770 OPS (min. 1,500 plate appearances).

He is a .265 career hitter (814-for-3,069) with 181 doubles, 52 triples, 77 home runs, 349 RBI, 414 runs, 293 walks, and 34 stolen bases.  The left-handed hitter has finished with the second-most triples in the National League on three occasions and his 41 triples since 2008 rank sixth in the majors.  His 52 career triples are an Arizona franchise record.

All 792 of his career appearances in the field have come at shortstop and his .978 fielding percentage is seventh-best among active shortstops with at least 650 games played.  His 72 errors are third-fewest among active shortstops with at least 3,000 total chances.

Drew has hit at a .417 clip (10-for-24) in his career as a pinch-hitter, the third-best mark among all Major Leaguers with 25 plate appearances in the pinch since 2006.

He is the younger brother of former Red Sox outfielder and 14-year Major League veteran J.D. Drew.  It will mark the 11th time a set of brothers have both played for the Red Sox, the last being Pedro and Ramon Martinez.  The younger Drew will wear No. 7, just as J.D. did with the Red Sox.  His older brother Tim also pitched for parts of five seasons in the majors.

After spending his entire professional career with Arizona, Drew was traded to Oakland on August 20 and started 39 of the A’s last 41 games of the season en route to the team winning the American League West title.  He batted .250 (38-for-152) with five home runs and 16 RBI with Oakland, including a .315 mark (17-for-54) over his final 13 games.

Drew hit a combined .223 (64-for-287) with 13 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 28 RBI, 38 runs and 37 walks in 79 games overall in 2012 after missing the first 73 games of the season while recovering from July 2011 surgery on a fractured right ankle.  He was 4-for-6 (.667) with seven RBI with the bases loaded and his .383 average (18-for-47) in 11 games against American League East opponents was tops among all Major Leaguers with at least 50 plate appearances against that division last year.

In 2008, Drew became the third shortstop in Major League history to collect at least 40 doubles (44), 10 triples (11) and 20 home runs (21) in a season, joining Nomar Garciaparra (Boston, 1997) and Hall of Famer Robin Yount (Milwaukee, 1980 and 1982).  He was named the D-backs’ Player of the Year by the Arizona chapter of the BBWAA that season and hit for the cycle on September 1, 2008, the third D-backs player ever to accomplish the feat.

His teams have reached the postseason twice and he started at shortstop in all seven of the Diamondbacks playoff games during the 2007 NLDS and NLCS, and all five of the A’s 2012 ALDS contests.  Drew has hit safely in all but two of his 12 career postseason games, batting .320 (16-for-50) with two home runs and five RBI, including a .500 clip (7-for-14) with two home runs and four RBI in the D-backs three-game sweep of the Cubs in the 2007 NLDS.

With the signing, the Red Sox 40-man roster is now at 40.

Red Sox Make Hanrahan Trade Official

Uncle Ben Cherington was busy the day after Christmas as he was busy showing off his new toys as the Boston Red Sox made their trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates official.

Here's the release from the Red Sox:

The Boston Red Sox today acquired two-time All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan and infielder Brock Holt from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for right-handed pitchers Mark Melancon and Stolmy Pimentel, infielder Ivan De Jesus, and first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands

Boston Red SoxHanrahan, 31, ranks fourth among National League relievers over the last two seasons with 76 saves and a 2.24 ERA (32 ER/128.1 IP) (min. 100.0 IP) and has recorded 128 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .205 batting average in that time.  He and Atlanta’s Craig Kimbrel are the only players to collect at least 35 saves and post an ERA under 3.00 in both 2011 and 2012, and he earned NL All-Star honors in each of those two campaigns.

He went 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA (18 ER) and 67 strikeouts in 59.2 innings in 2012, and finished fifth in the NL with both 36 saves and a 90.0 percent save rate (40 chances).  Hanrahan also held opponents to a .187 average this past season, sixth-best among qualifying National League relievers, and he did not allow an inherited runner to score all year.

In 2011, Hanrahan was given the Roberto Clemente Award by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America as the Pirates’ most valuable player.  That year, he ranked fourth among NL relievers with a 1.83 ERA (14 ER/68.2 IP) in 70 appearances and collected 40 saves.

Hanrahan has posted a 2.59 ERA (66 ER/229.1 IP) with 265 strikeouts in 238 relief appearances since being traded to Pittsburgh on June 30, 2009.  In that time, his ERA leads all Major League closers with at least 200.0 innings pitched.  Among all hurlers with at least 225.0 innings of work since that trade, Hanrahan ranks fourth in ERA and fifth in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (10.4).

Since becoming a full-time reliever in 2008, Hanrahan has fanned 393 batters in 346.1 innings for an average of 10.2 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, third-best among NL relievers with at least 250.0 innings in the last five years.  Only Carlos Marmol has a higher strikeout rate while pitching at least as many innings out of the bullpen since 2008 (12.6).

Hanrahan was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second round of the 2000 June Draft out of Norwalk (IA) Community High School.  He began his professional career with seven seasons in the Dodgers farm system before making his big league debut with Washington in 2007 after signing with the Nationals as a free agent after the 2006 campaign.  On June 30, 2009, he was sent to Pittsburgh from Washington with outfielder Lastings Milledge in exchange for outfielder Nyjer Morgan and pitcher Sean Burnett.

Over his six-year Major League career with the Nationals (2007-09) and Pirates (2009-12), he has logged 436 strikeouts in 397.1 innings while compiling a 22-17 record with 96 saves and a 3.74 ERA (165 ER).  He has made 342 consecutive relief appearances after beginning his career with 11 starts in 2007.

Hanrahan was the Nationals’ nominee for MLB’s Roberto Clemente Award in 2008, when he began a partnership with the American Red Cross to raise awareness and funds for the organization’s disaster relief efforts on the heels of devastating floods in the Midwest.

Holt, 24, was selected by Pittsburgh in the ninth round of the 2009 June Draft and made his Major League debut with the Pirates in September, hitting .292 (19-for-65) in 24 games.  He spent the majority of 2012 with Double-A Altoona and led the Eastern League with a .322 average (123-for-382) and was the fifth-hardest player to strike out (8.47 PA/SO).  He also saw his first Triple-A action and batted .432 (41-for-95) in 24 games with Indianapolis.

2013 NCAA Women’s Basketball Rankings – Week 8 (Dec. 25)

AP & USA Today Coaches Polls

When the Stanford Cardinal and UConn Huskies women's basketball teams step on Maples Pavilion court on Saturday, they will do be doing so as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country.

If UConn wins, the odds are they'll be the No. 1 team and there's no telling where Stanford will drop to.

The Cardinal and Huskies are followed by the Baylor Lady Bears, Duke Blue Devils and Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the top five of both polls.

Joining UConn and Notre Dame from the Big East in the top 25 are the Louisville Cardinals (12/12).

The Syracuse Orange and Villanova Wildcats are the only teams from the Big East among the others receiving votes in both polls. The St. John's Red Storm, Rutgers Scarlet Knights and DePaul Demons are among the others receiving votes in the Coaches Poll.
