Video: St. John’s Runs Past UConn Men, 71-65

UConn's Enosch Wolf appears dejected at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night.

When I looked up at the scoreboard on the television and saw that the UConn Huskies had scored seven points in about the first 10 minutes of the game, I said to myself, "here we go again". And like the game against South Florida, I hoped UConn would rally.

Again they did rally but unfortunately, a late 9-0 run by the St. John's Red Storm gave them a 71-65 win over the Huskies in front of 8,441 and a nationally televised audience on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden in the Big Apple.

The loss ends a three-game winning streak for UConn who fall to 15-6 (5-4 Big East). St. John's improves to 15-8 (7-4). It just happened to be the Huskies last trip to the Garden this year since they are ineligible for the Big East Tournament next month.

In his hometown, Omar Calhoun led UConn with 21 points. Shabazz Napier, who didn't start because of a rules violation, finished the game with 14 points and five assists. DeAndre Daniels chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Niels Giffey, making the start for Napier, almost had a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

Jakaar Sampson paced the Johnnies with 18 points and had six rebounds. Both D'Angleo Harrison and Marco Bourgault had 11 points with Harrison pulling down a team-high seven rebounds. Phil Greene IV rounded out the Red Storm in double-digits with 10 points and a team-high six assists.

With Napier out of the game, UConn couldn't drain their shots early and that put them into a hole. I'm not sure Napier would have made that much of a difference starting out but you never know. But if he violated a team rule, head coach Kevin Ollie did the right thing in punishing him.

The Huskies started their rally late in the first half cutting a 15 point deficit down to eight points before trailing 31-20 at the break. But St. John's opened the second half up by increasing their lead back up to 15 points at 39-24.

Behind Napier, the Huskies would cut the deficit to seven points on an 8-0 run. They would continue to whittle down St. John's lead behind Napier and Calhoun cutting it down to one point at 40-39 with just over 10 minutes left.

Giffey tied the game up at 44 on a free throw and then Ryan Boatright tied it up again at 51 with a three pointer. Two free throws by Boatright gave UConn the lead at 53-51 but St. John's used a 9-0 run to seize control of the game as the Huskies would get no closer than three points the rest of the way.

For starters, UConn REALLY needs to figure out how to attack a zone. I don't think Napier and Boatright did a good enough job of that. Settling for three-pointers isn't going to win you ballgames. Sure the Huskies don't have the size up front, but they have good athletes at other positions and have to figure out their zone offense.

Secondly, they need to figure out a way to not come out flat. When their shots weren't falling, it looked as though they had their heads down. We know Kevin Ollie isn't going to stand for that and my best guess would be that we may see some changes to the lineup going forward.

Yes, we know the Huskies aren't playing for anything but pride this season. They've done a pretty decent job of that all season long. Last night, just wasn't one of those nights.

UConn returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they visit the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ for a matchup with the Seton Hall Pirates. Tip is scheduled for 12 p.m.

CT WhaleBrandon Mashinter was boomeranged to New York; he left for the Big Apple with J.T. Miller, and returned to Hartford with Benn Ferriero two days later without seeing any NHL ice time.

The first shot of Tuesday’s game got Albany on the board, when Brandon Burlon got the puck to Matt Anderson at the point. After two quick steps to the middle, Anderson wound and fired the puck over the stick side shoulder of starting goaltender Jason Missiaen for Anderson’s eighth of the year. The goal went under review, but would ultimately stand for a 1-0 Devils lead 27 seconds into the matchup.

Missiaen would make a glove save on Chad Wiseman shortly thereafter, but when Kyle Jean sat for holding at 4:40, Burlon catalyzed another scoring play. Burlon fed Anderson at the left hash mark. Anderson’s one-touch pass hit Phil DeSimone right in the slot, and DeSimone had no problem closing on his fourth of the year. Five minutes and seventeen seconds in to the contest, Missiaen was pulled for Cam Talbot in relief.

The Whale’s chances were few and far between in the first; they managed to get just four pucks on Keith Kinkaid’s goal. The teams exchanged penalties several times before the first intermission, but Albany would take their 2-0 advantage into the locker room, as well as a 14-4 edge in the shot column. Continuing with his mantra of the season, head coach Ken Gernander spoke about another incomplete game, “That’s inexcusable.  Players with character play for 60 minutes.”

In the second, the game slowed down. Connecticut still only managed six shots in the second, but did hold the Devils to just seven tries of their own. At the end of the scoreless period, Brandon Segal drew blood with a high stick at the buzzer, giving Albany four minutes of power-play time to start the third.

With only 10 shots on the board through two, it still took the Whale seven and a half minutes to get a shot in the third. At that exact moment, Cam Janssen and Andrew Carroll dropped the gloves for the first bout of the game.

A minute and a half after that, at 8:58, Corbin McPherson gave Albany a 3-0 edge. Anderson was on the wall and found Steve Zalewski at the goal line. The feed to the front deflected off of Anderson, and McPherson was there in the slot for his first of the year at 8:58.

The Whale finally got on the board 20 seconds later; Micheal Haley found Logan Pyett at the point. The drive from the blueline was caught under Kinkaid, but with Palmieri and Newbury in front, the Ontario-born Newbury jabbed a stick in to the crease to poke it home.

Talbot, who was more active in puckhandling than usual in the game, took a delay of game for clearing the puck over the glass at 10:16. He did, however, manage to clear the puck on his own once during the kill.

Jason Wilson fought Alexander Urbom with 7:13 left after running him over behind Kinkaid’s net, and 59 seconds later Mike Vernace cut the deficit to just one. Kinkaid was behind the net, when Andrew Yogan clipped him and slung the loose puck around to Segal. Segal found Vernace alone in front for his fourth of the year, adding another goal to a little home scoring tear for the Whale blueliner.

Newbury manhandled his opponent after a draw with 3:38 to play, earning a cross-checking penalty, and while the timing was bad, it would lead to a Kelsey Tessier shorthander. Tessier stripped the puck in Connecticut’s defensive end and broke down the right wing to beat Kinkaid with a wrister at 3:21 that tied the game at three apiece. Tessier spoke of the goal and the game afterwards, “It was a PK… They kinda went to Segal and it opened up so I took the wrist shot. It’s good we got that one point but we need those two points right now, we have some teams to catch up to right now… We gotta blame ourselves that we’re not in the playoffs.”

The teams swapped chances yet again as Albany turned up the power play pressure and the Whale generated some additional shorthanded opportunities, but regulation would expire in a tie.

In the overtime period, Connecticut and Albany managed just a shot each, and a shootout commenced with Kinkaid shutting down Mashinter on a forehand to backhand move. Keith Kinkaid was perfect in the shootout, while Wiseman and Matt Anderson scored against Talbot to take the shootout, 2-0.

Kinkaid picked up his 15th win in the 4-3 victory, making 20 saves, while Talbot stopped 25 of 26 after coming in for Missiaen, who stopped seven of nine.

Video: UConn Women Spank Marquette, 94-37

Marquette Golden Eagles head coach Terri Mitchell glances at the clock late in the first half against UConn at Gampel Pavilion Tuesday night.

Marquette Golden Eagles head women's basketball coach Terri Mitchell probably wasn't happy when the Big East schedule came out and she saw the UConn Huskies on the schedule, twice. Given the talent UConn has, you can understand why.

For the second time this season, the Huskies put a whipping on the Golden Eagles with a 94-37 win in front of 6,430 at Gampel Pavilion on a light snowy Wednesday night in Storrs, CT.

UConn improves to 21-1 (8-1 Big East) while Marquette falls to 11-11 (3-6).

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis led the way with 22 points and five assists while pulling down six rebounds. Bria Hartley added 20 points, four assists and three steals while Stefanie Dolson had 15 points and five blocked shots, in her return after missing her first career game.

Caroline Doty had 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from three-point land. Kelly Faris had another "Kelly Faris" game with 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals. Breanna Stewart rounded out the Huskies in double-digits with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Moriah Jefferson tied KML with a team-high five assists.

Brooklyn Pumroy was the only member of the Golden Eagles to hit double figures with 11 points. Lauren Tibbs was the next highest scorer with six points. Chelsie Butler and Katie Young led them with five rebounds apiece.

This game was pretty much over after Marquette opened up the game with a three-pointer. The Huskies responded with the next 19 points that was part of a 42-8 run. UConn hit 60 points in the half as they took a 62-17 lead at the break.

Obviously the emotion of losing Brianna Banks is huge. But this was a game where players needed to step up. Doty had a big game shooting and Jefferson was great with the ball. You know what you're going to get from the four of Dolson, KML, Hartley and Stewart.

Doty and Jefferson will need to continue this as the Huskies go forward this season.

The UConn women return to action on Sunday afternoon when they'll host Geno Auriemma's old friend Doug Bruno and his DePaul Blue Demons squad. Tip is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Red Sox Nation Enjoys Truck Day

A large moving truck was parked outside Fenway Park for workers to load the Red Sox’ gear onto to transport it to spring training. Fans gathered later in the morning to send the truck off with cheers.

Despite the fact that it is now snowing lightly outside my humbly abode, Truck Day for the Boston Red Sox is a like a New England holiday.

For us up here, it means spring is close, meaning warmer weather. Oh wait, who am I kidding. We live in New England where you really never know what the weather is going to be like.

In all seriousness though, for Red Sox fans, it's the unofficial start of the 2013 season. And with players already already in camp working out, it's time for us fans to go into baseball mode, at least somewhat.

After last year's sh!tshow and the debacle the year before, let's hope 2013 is a season of turnaround. Because frankly I don't know how much more heartbreak from this franchise I can take.
