For the first time since 1994, the Boston Red Sox completed a triple play in the fourth inning during the second game of the doubleheader with the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.
After Red Sox starter Erik Bedard had put runners on first and second with no outs, he got a grounder off the bat of Sean Rodriguez to Jed Lowrie at third. Lowrie stepped on the bag for the first out, fired over to Dustin Pedroia for the second out. Pedroia’s relay went over to Adrian Gonzalez to get Rodriguez at first.
The last triple play for the Red Sox came in 1994 when John Valentin completed an unassisted triple play against the Seattle Mariners.
