Things weren’t looking good for the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. They were down 3-1 and seemingly on their way to their 10th straight loss. Then Jonny Gomes delivered a two-run homer to tie the game in the 7th and breathe new life into the visitors.
Unfortunately though Craig Breslow had some trouble allowing a walk, a hit and a three-run homer to Sean Rodriguez that deflated the sails of the already sinking ship. The three-run homer helped the Rays to an 8-5 win and sent the Red Sox further into the depths of the basement of the AL East.
Brandon Workman got the call from Triple-A to start this one and lasted five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Breslow got roughed up allowing the final five Rays runs in 2/3 of an inning. Alex Wilson and Edward Mujica had clean sheets out of pen.
A.J. Pierzynski had three hits and scored three times for the offensively challenged Red Sox. Grady Sizemore added two hits and Xander Bogaerts, one of the few bright spots at the moment, added two hits and two RBIs.
