After retiring before spring training last year, former Boston Red Sox captain Jason Varitek stayed away from baseball as he best he could. He did participate in a few of the memorable events from the 2012 season along with his own special day.
Now he finds himself back on the field at spring training. But this time around it's as an instructor as he's a special assistant to GM Ben Cherington.
On Wednesday, Varitek talked with the assembled media about his role with the club.
