New England Patriots defensive end Andre Carter celebrates after sacking New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez during the first half of their NFL football game in East Rutherford, New Jersey November 13, 2011

New England Patriots DE Andre Carter was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week by the NFL on Wednesday.

Carter earned the award with his 4.5 sack feat in New England’s 37-16 win over the New York Jets on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.  Carter set a franchise record with 4.5 sacks in one game breaking the old record of 4 held by Julius Adams at Atlanta (12-4-77), Tony McGee at Baltimore (11-16-78) and Mike Hawkins vs. NY Jets (9-9-79).

It was Carter’s third game of the season with at least 2 sacks and he now has a team leading 9 sacks on the season.

He is the second Patriot to be honored with the Weekly AFC awards joining QB Tom Brady who twice won AFC Offensive Player of the Week, once after each of the season’s first two games.
