Super Bowl Notes

Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis will be the fifth Super Bowl rematch in NFL history.

The New England Patriots and the New York Giants faced each other in Super Bowl

XLII on Feb. 3, 2008 in Arizona with the Giants prevailing 17-14.

SUPER BOWL REMATCHES

Miami vs. Washington – Super Bowl VII, Super Bowl XVII

Pittsburgh vs. Dallas – Super Bowl X, Super Bowl XIII, Super Bowl XXX

San Francisco vs. Cincinnati – Super Bowl XVI, Super Bowl XXIII

Dallas vs. Buffalo – Super Bowl XXVII, Super Bowl XXVIII

New York vs. New England – Super Bowl XLII, Super Bowl XLVI

This is just the third rematch in Super Bowl history among starting QB’s.  The others were Terry Bradshaw and Roger Staubach (Pittsburgh-Dallas, Super Bowl X & XIII) and Troy Aikman and Jim Kelly (Dallas-Buffalo, Super Bowl XXVII & XXVIII).

The two previous rematches were won by the same QB both times, Bradshaw and Aikman.

The 2011 AFC Championship was the sixth conference championship for Robert Kraft as Patriots owner. Kraft is the first NFL owner to bring his team to six Super Bowls and his six conference championships are the most of any NFL owner in the Super Bowl Era (since 1966). Seven NFL owners brought their teams to five Super Bowls, but Kraft is the first NFL owner to lead his team to six Super Bowl appearances.

The Patriots have the most Super Bowl titles since 1994, when Kraft took ownership.  The Packers, Steelers and Broncos each have won twice in that time frame.

New England head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady won their fifth conference championship together, becoming the first head coach and quarterback tandem to win five conference titles in the Super Bowl Era (since 1966). Three other coach-quarterback duos have qualified for four Super Bowls – Dallas’s Tom Landry and Roger Staubach; Buffalo’s Marv Levy and Jim Kelly; and Pittsburgh’s Chuck Noll and Terry Bradshaw.

This is Belichick’s fifth Super Bowl appearance as a head coach, that is second all-time to Don Shula who had six with Baltimore and Miami.

Brady is now tied with John Elway for most Super Bowl appearances by quarterback with five.

He is tied with Troy Aikman for second in Super Bowl wins with 3.  Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw are tied for 1st with 4 Super Bowl wins each.

Patriots Deion Branch (XXXIX) and Wes Welker (XLII) share the Super Bowl record for receptions in a game with San Francisco’s Jerry Rice (Super Bowl XXIII) and Cincinnati’s Dan Ross (Super Bowl XVI) with 11 each.

The Patriots have the most Super Bowl appearances in the last 30 years (1982-2011) with 7; the last 25 years (1987-2011) with 6; the last 20 years (1992-2011) with 6; the last 15 years (1997-2011) with 5 and the last 10 years (2002-11) with 4.  In the last five years (2007-2011) they are tied with Pittsburgh and the New York Giants with 2 appearances.

Patriots players who have won Super Bowl MVP Awards are QB Tom Brady in Super Bowl XXXVI & XXXVIII and WR Deion Branch in Super Bowl XXXIX.

This is the first time the Super Bowl has been played in retractable roof stadiums in back-to-back years.

Indianapolis is only the 4th time a “cold weather city” has hosted the game.  Detroit has had it twice, Super Bowl XVI and XL and Minneapolis hosted Super Bowl XXVI.

This is the fifth match up of head coaches who had previously won a Super Bowl.  Tom Coughlin (Giants) and Bill Belichick (Patriots) would join Tom Landry (Dallas) and Chuck Noll (Steelers) who met in Super Bowls X and XIII; Tom Flores (Raiders) and Joe Gibbs (Redskins) in Super Bowl XVIII and Bill Walsh (49ers) and Don Shula (Dolphins) met in Super Bowl XIX.

Super Bowl XLVI is the first Super Bowl in which the opposing QB’s have won the Super Bowl MVP Award.

Patriots Team Notes

Here is the Patriots roster, depth chart and injury report for the game.

2011 Patriots Schedule/Results

The Patriots overall franchise record is 414-366-9.  They are 23-15 in the post season and have won three Super Bowls (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX) in six appearances.  They last appeared in the playoffs in 2010 when they lost at home to the New York Jets in the AFC Divisional Playoff, 28-21.  They last appeared in a Super Bowl in 2007 losing to the New York Giants 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII.  They won the AFC Conference championship that season with playoff wins over Jacksonville and San Diego.

This season they defeated Denver in the AFC Division Game and Baltimore in the AFC Championship Game.

The Patriots are dedicating the 2011 season to the memory of Myra Hiatt Kraft, the late wife of owner Robert Kraft. Every Patriots player and coach will honor Myra’s memory by wearing a patch with her initials on it in recognition of her lifelong contributions to the local and global community and her influence on the charitable mission of the entire Patriots organization. The patch will be worn on the left chest of every player throughout the season.

The Patriots are the defending AFC East Champions they have won the division 9 of the last 11 seasons and 3 years in a row.

New England is the top seed for the second consecutive season and 4th time overall.

This is the Patriots 7th Super Bowl appearance as a franchise, they are 3-3 in their previous Super Bowl games.  The seven appearances rank second most in history after Dallas (5-3) and Pittsburgh (6-2), which both have been 8 times.

They are the first AFC team to have the top seed two years in a row since Buffalo in 1990 and 1991.

This is the 9th straight season the Patriots have had 10 wins or more and 10th time in the last 11 years.

Overall in the playoffs they are 23-15.

PATRIOTS PLAYOFF RECORD BY ROUND

  • First Round                   0-1
  • Wild Card Round            4-3
  • Divisional Round            9-6
  • AFC Championship         7-1
  • AFL Championship          0-1
  • Super Bowl                   3-3

New England is MINUS 3 in playoff turnover differential. The offense has given up 3 INTs and 2 fumbles, while the defense had 1 INT and 1 fumble recovery.  They finished the regular season as a PLUS 17.

The Patriots are 8 of 17 in 3rd down efficiency and 1 for 1 on fourth down attempts in the playoffs.

New England is 7 of 11 in the red zone and 3 for 4 in goal to go in the post season.

At one point in the regular season series the Patriots and Giants went 13 years between meetings.  The played on September 22, 1974 at the Yale Bowl a 28-20 Patriots win and didn’t face each other again until November 8, 1987 at Giants Stadium a 17-10 win for the Giants.

The Patriots have a .605 post season winning percentage it is third best in the NFL behind Green Bay .630 and Pittsburgh .611

If the Patriots lose, they will be the first team to lose a Super Bowl in four different decades (1986, 1997, 2008).

The Patriots last Super Bowl victory in January 2005 kicked off a string of championships in Boston.   The Red Sox won the World Series in 2007, the Celtics won the NBA title in 2008 and the Bruins wont he Stanley Cup in 2011 a period of six years, four months and nine days since Super Bowl XXXIX.

Should the Patriots win on Sunday it will shorten the span it took the four teams to win championships to four years, 3 months and eight days from the end of the 2007 World Series.

This is the Patriots first indoor game this season.

Here’s a recap of the jersey’s worn by the Patriots during their previous six Super Bowl appearances.

NFL uniform rules do not allow teams to wear their alternate, throwback or third jerseys in post season play.

Owner Robert Kraft graces the cover of this week’s “Sports Illustrated”.

In the playoffs the Patriots were flagged 3 times for 25 yards in penalties, while the Giants saw the yellow hanky 19 times for 163 yards.  That’s a lot of hidden yardage.

Patriots Staff Notes

This is the link to head coach Bill Belichick’s Wednesday press conference transcript.

Bill Belichick is 2-4 vs. the Giants in his career.  He is 2-2 against them as the head coach in New England and that includes one Super Bowl (0-1).

Overall in his NFL career Belichick is 175-97 in 16 NFL seasons.  He is 139-53 with New England and 36-44 with Cleveland.  He is 17-6 in the playoffs, 16-5 as head coach of the Patriots in the post season.  When you combine his regular season and post season records he is 192-103.

Belichick’s 192 wins are good for 9th all-time.  Chuck Knox, who coached the Rams, Redskins and Seahawks, is 8th all-time with 193.

He is the first coach in NFL history to have his teams win 10 games or more in 9 consecutive seasons.

Belichick is 3-1 in Super Bowls as a head coach.

Belichick is one of five head coaches in NFL history whose father (Steve Belichick) played in the league.  The others are former Kansas City head coach Todd Haley (Dick Haley), former San Francisco head coach Mike Nolan (Dick Nolan), former Cincinnati head coach David Shula (Don Shula) and former NY Jets head coach Joe Walton (Frank Walton).

New England has only failed to make the playoffs three times under Belichick in 2000, 2002 and 2008.

New England offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien has accepted the head coaching job at Penn State University, he will remain with New England through the Super Bowl.

The Patriots have hired Josh McDaniels as an offensive assistant for the remainder of the season.  McDaniels was the offensive coordinator in St. Louis this season but was available when ownership said they wouldn’t hold him to his contract after firing head coach Steve Spagnuolo.  McDaniels will be the offensive coordinator starting with the 2012 season replacing O’Brien, who had replaced him.

Belichick was the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants during their wins in Super Bowl XXI & XXV.

Belichick motivates through humiliation and it doesn’t matter who you are.

Belichick isn’t always orthodox when it comes to his coaching moves.

Defensive line coach Pepper Johnson played for the Giants and won two Super Bowls (XXI & XXV).

Giants Team Notes

Here is the Giants roster, depth chart and injury report for the game.

2011 Giants Schedule/Results

The Giants all-time record is 645-531-33 and they are 23-24 in the playoffs with their last playoff appearance coming in 2008.  That season the Giants lost to Philadelphia in the NFC Divisional round, 23-11. The Giants last appeared in a Super Bowl following the 2007 season and defeated the previously undefeated New England Patriots, 17-14 to win Super Bowl XLII. It is considered one the biggest upset in sports history.  The Giants have won three Super Bowls (XXI, XV, XLII) in four appearances and have also won 4 NFL Championships (1927, 1934, 1938, 1956) prior to the Super Bowl era.

This season they defeated Atlanta in the NFC Wild Card Game, Green Bay in the NFC Division Game and San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game.

New York is one of three NFL teams with at least 600 wins as a franchise.

The Giants have a huge New England following due to the fact that they were the closest pro football team to the region prior to the formation of the AFL in 1960 and the birth of the Patriots franchise.

This is the Giants 5th Super Bowl appearance as a franchise they are 3-1 in the previous games.

When New York beat New England in Week 9 at Gillette Stadium it snapped a 20-game home winning streak for the Patriots.

Since beating the Patriots the Giants are just 6-5, but three of those wins are playoff wins, with two of the playoff wins coming on the road.

The Giants are only the third team to play in a Super Bowl with less than 10 regular season wins (9-7).  The others were the Arizona Cardinals in 2008 and the Los Angeles Rams in 1979.

If the Giants win they will be the first team to win a Super Bowl in 4 different decades (1987, 1991, 2008).

The Giants will join the Steelers and Broncos as the 3rd team to have played in at least one Super Bowl televised on all four major broadcast networks. The Giants appearances in Super Bowl XX & XXXV were on CBS, Super Bowl XXV was on ABC, Super Bowl XLII was on FOX and NBC will carry Super Bowl XLVI.

New York is PLUS 5 in playoff turnover differential. The offense has given up 1 INTs and 0 fumbles, while the defense had 1 INT and 5 fumble recoveries.  They finished the regular season as a PLUS 7.

The Giants are 23 of 52 in 3rd down efficiency and 1 for 2 on fourth down attempts in the playoffs.

This will be the Giants 4th indoor game this season.  The others were at Dallas (W 37-34), at New Orleans (L 49-24) and at Arizona (W 31-27).

Giants Staff Notes

Read what New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and defensive coordinator Perry Fewell had to say to the media about the match up.

Coughlin was a one time assistant coach at Boston College and coached with Belichick on the Giants staff for three seasons (1988-1990).

Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride is from New Haven CT and played and coached at Southern Connecticut State University.

Manning’s funny story on his relationship with his big brother, Peyton.

Both teams tied a NFL record this year with a 99-yard scoring play.  The Giants did it in Week 16 at NY Jets when Manning threw a pass to Victor Cruz who went 99-yards for the touchdown.

Giants WR Mario Manningham can’t wait to face Patriots two-way player Julian Edelman.

Author’s Note: I’d like to thank Ian for letting me bring you all the Patriots news again this season, it’s been enjoyable writing the weekly In The Red Zone post, the game recaps and all the In The Red Zone Weekly Game Previews, like the one above.

I have no clue what these pieces grab for readership numbers but even if only one person reads these it’s worth putting out.

I’d also like to thank the Patriots beat writers especially Ian Rapoport, Shalise Manza Young and Mike Reiss.  Those three are great writers and we link a lot back to their blog posts, web and paper articles.  The Patriots PR Staff who put out a great weekly press release and have a wonderful website, as well as the other sites I get stats and information from through the year like FOX Sports, Yahoo Sports, Pro Football Reference, SiriusXM, Wikipedia, ESPN, NFL and opponents websites and beat writers.

Most of all thanks to you, Patriots fans first and the fans of opponents who visit through the year and football fans in general. It’s the largest sport in America and if you don’t believe me just take a look at the media coverage numbers between the World Series and the Super Bowl, there’s no comparison, the NFL is King.

I can’t believe after this week there are no more games, but we shall meet again on the other side of free agency.
