Price Leads UConn Into Sweet 16

Connecticut's A.J. Price (12) reacts to his basket in the first half of a second-round men's NCAA college basketball tournament game against Texas A&M - MICHAEL PEREZ / AP

When Jerome Dyson went down with his knee injury, it was expected that A.J. Price would need to score some more if the UConn Huskies were to go far this season. Today, the Huskies got that and Price also got some help from Jeff Adrien.

Price had 27 points and 9 assists to help the No. 1 seed Huskies to a 92-66 win over the 9th seed Texas A&M Aggies at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.

UConn improves to 29-4 and now advance to the Sweet 16 and head to Glendale, AZ where they will await the winner of the Purdue/Washington game on Thursday night. Texas A&M finishes up the season 24-10.

UConn's Jeff Adrien scores two points in the first half over David Loubeau of Texas A&M - Stephen Dunn/Hartford CourantAdrien played perhaps his best game in the months as he finished with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Stanley Robinson added 12 points and 6 rebounds while Gavin Edwards had a great game off the bench with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Even walk-on Jim Veronick scored 2 points which excited the UConn bench.

Donald Sloan and Bryan Davis led the Aggies with 12 points each with Davis pulling down a team-high 8 rebounds. David Lobeau was the only other Aggies player in double-digits with 11 points.

The Aggies were thoroughly overmatched throughout the game and it showed early on when Hasheem Thabeet (3 blocks on the day) and Adrien blocked their first two shots. The Huskies got it going early again today as they raced out to a 10-0 lead. The Aggies finally got on the board at the 16:34 mark on a Derrick Roland jumper.

Loubeau got the Aggies to within 6 at 14-8 but a 13-1 run by the Huskies increased their lead to 18 points at 27-9. Texas A&M could only get as close as 13 points the rest of the first half and a Price layup gave the Huskies their first twenty point lead at 43-22. Price made the lead 24 points on a three-pointer as the Huskies enjoyed a 51-33 lead at the break despite Thabeet’s limited minutes due to foul trouble.

It was slow going for the Huskies in the second half as Thabeet picked up his third foul just 14 seconds into the half and headed to bench. The Aggies took advantage of Thabeet’s absence and cut the lead to 14 points with 4 straight points before Price quieted them with another three-pointer.

The Aggies would get no closer than 17 points the rest of the way as the Aggies could not stop Price or Adrien.

Overall a solid win for the Huskies. They got what they expected from Price and got help for him in Adrien and Robinson. Thabeet will need to do a better job of not picking up fouls because his presence is definitely needed on the the defensive end of the floor as the Aggies exploited his absence before Jim Calhoun made the necessary adjustments.

The offense is really clicking right now and let’s hope that continues on in the Sweet 16 on Thursday night.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 3/21

Boston Red Sox Jason Varitek connects for a three run home run off Pittsburgh Pirates starter Jeff Karstens in the second inning of their spring training baseball game in Fort Myers, Fla., Friday March 20, 2009. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

It was a bad news, good news day for the Boston Red Sox on Friday in Ft. Myers.

The bad news is that J.D. Drew was hit by a pitch on his hand and was sent for x-rays. The good news is that Drew should be okay after the x-rays were negative. The other good news includes the outing from Clay Buchholz in the Red Sox 11-4 win over the Pirates, Dustin Pedroia’s return to the lineup and Jason Varitek hit another home run.

After having to leave the WBC with a strained abdominal muscle, Superman Pedroia had been chomping at the bit to get back onto the field and into a game. He got his chance yesterday as he went 1-for-2 with an RBI before leaving the game. Pedroia said he felt great but that today would be the bigger test in seeing how he felt after playing.

I felt good. I think the biggest thing is to see how I feel tomorrow, if I’m not sore or anything like that. I definitely want to take it slow, do all my treatment and stuff. It was good to get back on the field, get a couple at-bats and get back in the game rhythm, but tomorrow is probably the biggest day. (We’ll) see how it feels, hopefully I’m not sore, hopefully Sunday I can get out there and play again.

It’s good to see Pedroia back on the field and being able to play. Hopefully he feels great today and is back on the field on Sunday when the World Champion Phillies come to Ft. Myers.

The Captain had himself a whale of game on Friday afternoon against the Pirates as he 1-for-2 with a 3-run blast that went over the bleachers in right field. He finished with 4 RBIs in the game. Actually it was a great day for the catchers as George Kottaras added a 2-hit day and had 2 RBIs to boot. Chip Ambres added 2 RBIs on a 2-run blast in the 7th for the Sox. Paul McAnulty led the Red Sox with 3 hits and added an RBI to the cause.

Clay Buchholz got the start for the Red Sox and had another great outing. He went 5 innings, throwing 70 pitches. He gave up an unearned run on 4 hits and a walk while striking out 3. His spring ERA now stands at 0.66. Jonathan Papelbon had a rough afternoon as he gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk while striking out the side. Takashi Saito worked an inning giving up a run on 3 hits while Hideki Okajima gave up a hit in his inning of work. Fresh back from Team Puerto Rico, Javier Lopez struck out 1 in his one inning.

The Red Sox head over to Jupiter today to take on the Florida Marlins at 1:05 PM. The game will be televised on NESN and can also be heard on WRKO on your AM radio dial. Michael Bowden will get the start for the Sox. Jason Bay is the lone regular making the trip across the state.

It should be an interesting game on Sunday night as Team USA will take on Japan at 8 PM on ESPN in the World Baseball Classic semifinals. Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka will get the start for Japan and will be opposed by Roy Oswalt. Matsuzaka is 2-0 in the WBC with a 1.80 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 10 innings

Celtics Get Past Spurs 80-77

Boston Celtics: Key missed free throws by the San Antonio Spurs gave the Boston Celtics an 80-77 win in Kevin Garnett’s return to the lineup in San Antonio. Garnett played only 15 minutes in his return scoring 10 points and pulling down 4 rebounds. Also back in the lineup was former UConn Husky Ray Allen who led the Green with 19 points. Rajon Rondo finished with 16 points and 12 assists while Kendrick Perkins had 10 points and Paul Pierce had 9 points and 12 rebounds. The Spurs’ Eva Longoria Tony Parker led the all scorers with 25 points with Tim Duncan chipping in 15. The Celtics have 12 games left in the season and head to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies tomorrow night at 8 PM. [ESPN.com]

Afternoon UConn Huskies Delight – 3/20

UConn coach Jim Calhoun arrived at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia on Friday afternoon for team practice after spending the night in a Philadelphia hospital. (STEPHEN DUNN / HARTFORD COURANT

The good news for the UConn Huskies came this morning when we found out that head coach Jim Calhoun was released from the hospital after a bout of dehydration. As the morning wore on, we found out that he would be at practice this afternoon and would be at the press conference later on.

During the press conference Calhoun announced that he had been given a clean bill of health after a full examination.

Now that Calhoun’s back to guide the Huskies in the second round against Texas A&M tomorrow (3:35 PM, CBS), let’s take a look at the links that have come across during the day from the various media outlets.

Obviously a great win for the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team but all eyes are on the health of head coach Jim Calhoun. According to John Barr of ESPN, Calhoun is still in the hospital and will be reevaluated later this morning. He did say Calhoun was listed in good condition. The Huskies will be holding a practice this afternoon around 2. SportsCenter is expected to show the Huskies press conference. And if you hadn’t heard, the Huskies will play Texas A&M at 3:30 PM. Dick Enberg and Jay Bilas will have the call on CBS HD.

UPDATE 10:19 AM: John Barr of ESPN is now reporting that Jim Calhoun has been released from the hospital and now has been given a clean bill of health. He is back at the hotel and eating breakfast with the team. It’s not known whether or not he’ll be at practice today. UConn’s media availability will start at 2:45 PM and it’s still expected to be shown on SportsCenter at that time

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 3/20

Boston Red Sox starter Jon Lester pitches to Cincinnati Reds' Alex Gonzalez in first inning of a spring training baseball game in Sarasota, Fla., Thursday, March 19, 2009. (AP Photo/Keith Srakocic)

It was a good day all around for the Boston Red Sox yesterday. They beat the Reds, found out Dustin Pedroia will be back tomorrow and Tim Wakefield and George Kottaras found bliss during a minor league game.

Jon Lester got the start for the Red Sox last night against the Reds and had a really good outing. He overcame his early struggles in the first and was pretty much dominant after that. Jed Lowrie had another good day at the plate going 3-for-4 with a single, double and a home run with 3 RBIs to help the Red Sox to a 9-1 win over former Red Sox player Bronson Arroyo and the Cincinnati Reds.

Lester went 4 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and a walk to go along with 6 strikeouts. Manny Delcarmen went 1 2/3 innings allowing a hit and had a strikeout. Ramon Ramirez followed him with an inning of work giving up a hit and had a strikeout. Daniel Bard’s impressive spring continued as he gave up 2 hits but used his overpowering fastball to work himself out of the self-created jam. He added a strikeout while Billy Traber worked the 9th allowing a hit and had a strikeout as well.

Chris Carter had a good night at the plate with a 2 hits which included a 2-run homer. Nick Green added a RBI double and Ryan Kalish chipped in with a 3-run triple.

Probably the best news of the day came when it was announced that Pedroia would be in the lineup today against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“I came in yesterday and I did tee and flips,” Pedroia said. “So we’ll see today. Maybe get a couple at bats tomorrow. Hopefully that’s the plan. But I haven’t felt anything. I feel fine.”

“I haven’t felt it one time since I got back,” he said. “I think the two days that I had off, actually three days that I had off, kind of calmed everything down. Everything’s been fine.”

“I think once the Red Sox found out, the first thing is they kind of panicked, shut it down, made sure I’m all right for the season, which is a smart thing to do,” he said. “I’m just happy that it’s nothing, nothing that will bother me for the rest of the year. I’ll get in there tomorrow, try to get my timing back and get ready for the season.”

You know the Red Sox will be monitoring every half inning to make sure he’s feeling okay. This is good news though as there is still 2 ½ weeks until the season starts up which hopefully is enough time for him to get his timing back and be ready to help lead the Red Sox to their 3rd World Series title in the past 5 years.

Mel Thomas Signs Training Camp Contract With Seattle Storm

Mel Thomas: The Seattle Storm of the WNBA announced today that they have signed former UConn Huskies women’s basketball player Mel Thomas to a training camp contract with the team. Thomas is finishing up her season in Ireland with the Bausch and Lomb Waterford Wildcats. She is averaging 22.3 points which is good for the 4th in Basketball Ireland’s  Superleague. No Calhoun No Problem For Huskies In Rout

Connecticut associate head coach George Blaney gestures to his players the first half of a first-round men's NCAA college basketball tournament game against Chattanooga in Philadelphia, Thursday, March 19, 2009. Blaney coached the team because head coach Jim Calhou

Everyone was worried about how the No.1 seed UConn Huskies would play against the No. 16 seed Chattanooga Mocs without head coach Jim Calhoun, who was out due to illness. Calhoun was probably feeling a little better after watching the effort that his Huskies put forth this afternoon.

Stanley Robinson led five players in double figures with 24 points to help the Huskies to a 103-47 destruction of the Mocs to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. It’s the Huskies first win in the NCAA Tournament since beating the Washington Huskies in Sweet 16 back in 2006.

The Huskies (28-4) will take on the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday at a time to be determined. The Mocs finish up the season 18-17.

Connecticut forward Stanley Robinson (21) dunks the ball as Chattanooga guard Keyron Sheard during the second half of their first-round men's NCAA college basketball tournament game in Philadelphia, Thursday, March 19, 2009. Connecticut won 103-47. Robinson scored a team high 24. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)Hasheem Thabeet added 20 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks while A.J. Price also had 20 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Jeff Adrien finally showed back up as he had 13 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists. Kemba Walker rounded out the Huskies in double digits with 10 points to go along with 6 assists while Craig Austrie also had 6 assists to go with his 4 points.

The Mocs were led by Kevin Goffney’s 15 points. Nicchaeus Doaks chipped in with 9 points and 6 rebounds while Chris Early had 8 points. Mocs leading scorer Stephen McDowell had a rough game from the floor (1-for-12) and finished with 2 points.

For about the first 5 minutes of the game, it looked like the Mocs might hang around with UConn as they held an 8-6 lead with 15:18 to go in the first half. Then the Huskies went on a 10-0 run before an Early layup stopped it to make it 16-10 UConn.

The Mocs came back though as they went on a 6-1 run that ended on a Jeremy Saffore layup that cut UConn’s lead to 17-15. It was all Huskies after that as they went on a 14-0 run to open up a 31-15 lead. After Doaks made a layup to stop the run, the Huskies went on an 11-0 run to push the lead to 25 at 42-17. The Huskies would go into the locker room with a 48-20 lead.

If there was any chance of a Moc’s come back in the second half, UConn quickly put that to rest as they opened up the half with a 15-0 run in the first 4:18. After that it was just a clinic by the Huskies as the Mocs missed 27 straight shots that started with 7:45 to go in the first half and ended when Goffney made a layup with 14:54 to go in the rout.

While the Huskies were without their leader in Calhoun, the guys you expect to step up did just that. Robinson and Thabeet were outstanding on both ends of the floor. Once Price got hot, you knew it could be a long night for the Mocs and it was. Also good to see Adrien back playing some basketball instead of being invisible on the floor and stat sheet.

If there was one thing that the Huskies didn’t do well today, it was their free throw shooting (again). While it didn’t matter today, it may matter down the line and there’s no way the Huskies can shot 59.0% (23-of-39) from the free throw line and expect to win games.
