One Game From Perfection For UConn Women

Coming into tonight’s game with the Stanford Cardinal, the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team had one goal in mind. That was to win and make it to the championship game on Tuesday night. This wasn’t supposed to be an easy task for the Huskies as they would need to contain Jayne Appel and her recent dominance in the post. And oh by the way, Stanford was the last team to beat the Huskies.

Connecticut's Renee Montgomery hugs coach Geno Auriemma at the end of a semifinal of the NCAA women's college basketball tournament Final Four on Sunday, April 5, 2009, in St. Louis. Connecticut beat Stanford 83-64 to advanceIt wouldn’t matter though as Renee Montgomery put her team on her back leading the way with 26 points to give UConn an 83-64 win over the Cardinal in front of 18,621 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis to advance to the NCAA Women’s National Championship game on Tuesday night against their friends from the Big East, the Louisville Cardinals who advanced by upsetting the Oklahoma Sooners.

Besides her 26 points, the senior co-captain added 6 assists and 4 steals. Maya Moore had a quiet 24 points and 8 rebounds while freshman Tiffany Hayes added 11 points. Kalana Greene chipped in with 10 points and 5 rebounds and Tina Charles added 8 points and 12 rebounds.

The only real offense the Cardinal had tonight came from Appel  who had 26 points and 7 rebounds. Nnemkadi Ogwumike added 13 points and 12 rebounds while Kayla Pedersen had 10 points. Jeanette Pohlen led Stanford with 6 assists.

Hayes got the Huskies started off on the right track with a 3-pointer that was part of an 11-4 run to start the game. Appel then almost single-handedly brought the Cardinal back with 8 points that was part of a 10-2 run to give themselves a 1-point lead at 14-13.

Over the next 7 minutes, Montgomery had seen enough as she hit a 3-pointer to give the Huskies the lead back for good and it also sparked a 22-6 run to give them a 35-20 lead with just over 3 minutes to go in the half. Stanford would outscore the Huskies 4-2 the rest of the half but UConn held a 13 point lead at 37-24 going into the locker room.

Maya Moore goes past Jayne Appel of Stanford for 2 of her 24 points - Michael McAndrews/Hartford CourantThe Huskies put to bed any thought of a Stanford comeback in the second half as they went on a 13-0 run over the first 5:36 before Appel ended the bleeding and a span of 7:49 without scoring with a layup. UConn continued to build it’s lead as it got as high as 31 points with 12:06 to go.

Give credit to Stanford though, they could have just sit back and taken the beating but instead they kept playing hard and got it down 19 points which drove Geno Auriemma insane on the UConn sidelines. He was definitely not pleased and did most of his yelling in the direction of Charles.

The Huskies now need one more win to complete the perfect season and take home their first national title since 2004. To do that though, they will have to beat Louisville, a team that they have beaten twice and I mean beaten badly. UConn beat the Cardinals by 28 points and 39 points this season.

But this is a different Louisville team. Their head coach Jeff Walz has them playing at an unbelievable level right now and they have all the confidence in the world right now. No one expecting them to be there while this has been UConn’s destiny since the first practice.

Can the Huskies do it or will Louisville pull off the upset? We won’t know until about 10:45 PM on Tuesday night.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 4/5

Welcome to Fenway Park

Are you ready for it? Y’all know what I’m talking about. Opening Day at Fenway Park is just a mere 32 hours away. That’s right. Just 32 hours away and there will be some Boston Red Sox baseball being played at Fenway Park or on your television, computer or on your radio.

The Red Sox finished up their spring schedule yesterday with a 9-3 shellacking of the New York Mets at Citi Field. Daisuke Matsuzaka got the start for the Sox and believe it or not, he was already working on his Houdini magic. He found himself in trouble a few times but was able to escape allowing no runs on a hit with 4 walks in 4 innings of work.

“I always want to improve from year to year, to be better in my second year and to be better now going into my third year,” Matsuzaka said. “But on the mound I just want to be able to pitch with confidence and attack the hitters.

“I think right now I’m able to pitch as I imagined myself pitching, and I just hope I can keep that up during the regular season,” he said.

Hopefully he attacks the hitters like he did in the first two games of the WBC. If he does, it could prove to be a good year for him.

The Red Sox will work out today at the Fens at 2 PM to prepare for an ALCS rematch with the American League champion Tampa Bay Rays (that doesn’t sound right does it). The Rays will workout at 4 PM and then come Monday at 2 PM, weather permitting of course, the two teams will start up the rivalry once again.

I know I’m looking forward to it as the first Red Sox game is the real sign that spring has sprung here in  New England.

This was supposed to be the year that the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team won the NCAA title. It was all part of their 5-year plan. You see, they had won the title back in 1999 and 2004, both times out of the West Regional that was held in Phoenix.

This year the Huskies were assigned to the West Regional with the finals to be held in Phoenix as well. All the cards were there for UConn. Unfortunately for one night, the Michigan State Spartans were the better team and ruined the hopes of Jim Calhoun and his Huskies team not to mention all of UConn Country.

Now our hopes lie on the shoulders of the juggernaut that is the UConn women’s basketball team. They are in St. Louis  for the Women’s Final Four where they will take on the Stanford Cardinal at approximately 9:37 PM on ESPN2. This will probably be UConn’s biggest test of the season as they really haven’t faced a team like Stanford.

Sure they played Oklahoma, North Carolina and Louisville (twice), blowing them out by an average of 31.25 points but this is a different time of the season where the best teams are left. Two of those teams they beat badly are still playing and their opponent tonight was the last team to hand them a loss ending their dreams of a national title last season.

Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself!!!

Was This Jim Calhoun’s Final Game At UConn?

Could this have been Jim Calhoun's last game as UConn Huskies head coach? - HARRY E. WALKER / MCT

After the 82-73 loss to the Michigan State Spartans in the Final Four, UConn Huskies head coach Jim Calhoun said that he will think about retiring a little more than he normally does each year.

Jim Calhoun says he will think about getting out of coaching because of “some things thrown around for the past couple of weeks” that have disappointed him.

“Those kind of things, that’s why Dean Smith told me at 67 he got out,” Calhoun recalled, referring to North Carolina’s retired Hall of Fame coach. “It wasn’t basketball. It was the other things.

“I love the kids, love the game. I don’t plan to go anyplace. But I’m going to give a lot of reflection, maybe more reflection than normal, because of that.”

If Calhoun were to leave, he would leave behind a great legacy at UConn despite whatever happens with the recruiting allegations. It’s a shame that it even has to come to this for Calhoun.

The big question is who would coach the Huskies should Calhoun leave? Associate head coach George Blaney is a three years older than Calhoun and assistant coach Andre LeFleur is also involved. Former assistant Tom Moore is now at Quinnipiac and is also heavily involved with the recruiting scandal.

There’s not a lot of big names out there other than Bob Knight right now that are available and while he’s expressed an interest in the right situation, the question remains would UConn be the right situation.

So if Calhoun retires, I could honestly see Central Connecticut State University head coach and former UConn assistant Howie Dickenman coming back to Storrs and guiding the Huskies.

Michigan State Ends UConn’s Run In Final Four

Hasheem Thabeet, Jeff Adrien, and Jonathan Mandeldove, of UConn, watch the final moments of their season tick away as Michigan State defeated the Huskies 82-73 - John Woike/Hartford Courant

The Michigan State Spartans came into this game needing to execute their game plan perfectly as underdogs despite having some what of a home-court advantage. The UConn Huskies needed to come out and do what they had been doing all tournament long and most likely they would advance to the championship game on Monday.

Well Michigan State executed their game plan to perfection and UConn’s guards decided to take the night off plus their free throw shooting finally came back to haunt them as the Spartans fought off a late UConn run to win 82-73 in front of 72,456 at Ford Field in Detroit to advance to the NCAA National Championship game against the winner of the North Carolina/Villanova game that is currently being played.

UConn's Stanley Robinson slam dunks in the first half against Michigan State during a men's NCAA Final Four semifinal - AMY SANCETTA / APTrailing by 11 points with 3:21 to go, it looked all but over for the Huskies. But then they came together as they went on an 11-3 run cut the Michigan State lead to three at 74-71 on a Stanley Robinson dunk. Unfortunately, Kemba Walker didn’t get back on defense and Durrell Summers beat him down the floor for a layup. Walker fouled him and Summers converted the free throw and just like that the Spartans were back up 6 points with a minute to go in the game.

The Huskies would only get a basket from Craig Austrie with 30 seconds to go as Michigan State hit five free throws to clinch a spot in the finals on Monday night.

The Huskies simply didn’t get anything from their guards tonight as A.J. Price, Austrie and Walker combined to go 8-of-29 from the floor. Walker was awful at the free throw line as well as he went 3-of-9 and the Huskies finished the game 21-of-33 (63.6%).

Hasheem Thabeet led the Huskies with 17 points and added 6 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Robinson finished with 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds with 2 blocks while Price also ended up with 15 points. Jeff Adrien had 13 points and 7 rebounds in the final game of his college career.

UConn really had no answer for Kalin Lucas who led the Spartans with 21 points.  They couldn’t stop Raymor Morgan either as he had 18 points and 9 rebounds while Korie Lucious added 11 points and Summers chipped in with 10.

The Huskies normally pride themselves on getting the defensive rebounds but the Spartans were able to corral 18 offensive boards and that was one factor as to why the Huskies lost. The other was there free throw shooting.

Plus Walker looked like a freshman out there as he was probably playing a little too fast for Jim Calhoun’s liking.

Michigan State's Durrell Summers and head coach Tom Izzo embrace after their 82-73 win over Connecticut in a men's NCAA Final Four semifinal college basketball game Saturday, April 4, 2009, in Detroit. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya)You have to give credit where credit is due though. Tom Izzo knew exactly what he wanted to do to beat the Huskies and his players did what he asked and now find themselves with a chance to win the NCAA title.

The Huskies will lose Price, Adrien and Austrie and will most likely lose Thabeet to the NBA. I really think UConn will have a tough time replacing the trio especially Price and most definitely Adrien.

Adrien played with his heart on his sleeve for four years and was the emotional leader of this team. You can’t replace what he brings to the table. Hopefully some of the younger Huskies have learned from him and will bring the passion that Adrien brought every day to this UConn men’s basketball program.

UConn does have some good recruits coming in and will get Jerome Dyson back next year. The rest of the team will have another year under their belts. Should we expect another UConn run to the Final Four next season? It’s too early to tell right now but anything is possible.

And oh yeah, we still have that recruiting scandal to worry about.

But all in all, a good season for the Huskies as they overcame a lot of adversity to get where they did. They have every right to be sad after a tough loss like this but I, for one, am proud of what this team accomplished this season.
