Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 4/18

Boston Red Sox left fielder Jason Bay is congratulated after his 2 run hr in the second as the Red Sox play the Orioles at Fenway Park. Friday, April 17, 2009. (Stuart Cahill/Boston Herald)

In a game with a similar outcome to the “Mother’s Day Miracle”, the Baltimore Orioles saw themselves with a big lead over the Boston Red Sox. But as time went on, the Red Sox chipped away at the 7-0 lead spotted to the Orioles by an ineffective Brad Penny and eventually came out 10-8 winners at Fenway Park last night.

While Penny had some good life on his fastball, his location left something to be desired as he walked 5 batters and left some pitches up in the zone that this good hitting Orioles team capitalized on.

“I felt great. I haven’t had that kind of stuff in a while. The walks killed me tonight.”

“I don’t know. That’s uncharacteristic for me. I don’t usually walk a lot of people. I got that one out of the way, I guess.”

“Stuff-wise, I felt great. My breaking ball was good. I didn’t get to throw too many splits, because I was 2-1, 3-1 to everyone. I had a great curveball. My fastball, I felt great with it today.”

He may have felt great but he looked awful last night. Hopefully, Penny can bounce back in his next start against the Minnesota Twins. With Daisuke Matsuzaka out right now, the Red Sox need him to pitch well because the bullpen can’t keep getting taxed.

Speaking of the bullpen, how good do they look right now. Manny Delcarmen and Ramon Ramirez still haven’t given up a run this season (knock on wood). Ramirez in particular has looked outstanding and is showing why the Red Sox traded Coco Crisp to the Kansas City Royals for him.

The bullpen is hot though right now as they have throw 16 straight scoreless innings. The only one who has looked a little out of sorts has been Javier Lopez but I suspect he’ll turn it around sooner rather than later. Otherwise, he may find himself out of a job.

One last thing to pass on about tonight’s game.

With the Boston Bruins taking on the Montreal Canadians in Game 2 of the first round of the NHL Playoffs and the Red Sox playing at the same time, tonight’s Red Sox game will be shown on the NESNPlus channel.

Penny Falters But Red Sox Bullpen, Offense Pick Him Up In 10-8 Win

Boston Red Sox Mike Lowell, center, is congratulated by teammate Dustin Pedroia (15) after he and Jason Bay, right, were driven home on a double by Nick Green in the fifth inning against the Baltimore Orioles during their MLB baseball game Friday, April 17, 2009, in Boston.(AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

By the end of the 2nd inning, the Boston Red Sox found themselves in a 7-0 hole thanks to some craptastic pitching from Brad Penny. But not to worry, the offense stayed awake and the Red Sox bullpen was once again strong as they came back to beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-8 in front of 38,266 on a beautiful night for baseball at Fenway Park.

It’s the second straight win for the Red Sox who improve to 4-6 while the Oriole fall to 6-4.

Boston Red Sox starter Brad Penny drops the rosin bag after giving up a grand slam to Baltimore Orioles Nick Markakis in the second inning of their MLB baseball game Friday, April 17, 2009, in Boston. Penny gave up seven earned runs in the inning. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)Penny really had trouble with all of his pitches and just looked like he was gliding the ball over the plate. He did go 3 innings, allowing 8 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks while striking out 1. Manny Delcarmen, Javier Lopez, Ramon Ramirez (1-0), Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon combined to throw 6 innings of five-hit ball with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

Jeremy Guthrie was staked to a 7-run lead but faltered in the 2nd and 5th innings although his defense didn’t help him out. He went 4 2/3 innings, allowing 8 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits and 4 walks and had 5 strikeouts. Danys Baez worked 1 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and a walk and a strikeout. Matt Albers worked the final two innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks with a strikeout.

Dustin Pedroia led the Red Sox with 3 hits while Jacoby Ellsbury and Nick Green each had 2 hits with Ellsbury adding a RBI and Green had 2 of his own. J.D. Drew was perfect at the plate as he was 2-for-2 (solo home run, triple) with 3 walks and an RBI. Jason Bay continues to swing a hot stick as his 2-run homer got the Red Sox back in the game. It was his only hit of the night but he knocked in 3 runs total. Mike Lowell and David Ortiz had the other RBI.

Both teams managed a hit a piece in the 1st inning but in the 2nd things took a turn for the worse.

Ty Wigginton led off the inning with a single off of Penny and Luke Scott followed with a single. Penny then walked Gregg Zaun to load the bases up and then walked in a run when he gave Ryan Freel the free pass. After Cesar Izturis lined out, Brian Roberts laced a single to score Scott and give the O’s a 2-0 lead. Another bases loaded walk, this time Baltimore Orioles Nick Markakis, right, watches the flight of his grand slam off Boston Red Sox starter Brad Penny in the second inning of their MLB baseball game Friday, April 17, 2009, in Boston. At left is Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)to Adam Jones, forced in another run to make it 3-0.  Markakis then took a decent pitch from Penny and crushed into the center field seats for a grand slam and just like that it was a 7-0 Orioles lead. Penny escaped any further trouble that inning by getting Aubrey Huff to pop out and Wigginton to fly out.

As we saw last season, you can never really count out the Red Sox. They continued that trend as they chipped away at what should have been an insurmountable lead.

Guthrie walked Drew to start the home half of 2nd and Bay followed with a 2-run homer to make it 7-2 Orioles. Guthrie walked Lowell and Varitek singled up the middle off the second base bag with Lowell going first to third even with the hip. Green flew out to right with Lowell staying put at third although he probably could have scored since Markakis’ throw home was off line. Ellsbury made it 7-3 with a single that scored Lowell. Pedroia loaded the bases up with an infield single and Big Papi hit a sac fly to score the Captain to make it 7-4. Guthrie got out of the inning by getting Kevin Youkilis to ground out to third.

Drew made it 7-5 when he led off the bottom of the 3rd with a solo home run.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 4/17

ANAHEIM, CA - APRIL 11: Pitcher Brad Penny #36 of the Boston Red Sox throws a pitch against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on April 11, 2009 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The Red Sox won 5-4. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

The Boston Red Sox return home to Fenway Park after a 2-4 trip to the west coast where they find themselves taking on the quick starting Baltimore Orioles. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM and the game will be televised on NESN. You can also catch the game on the radio on one of the many affiliates of the Red Sox Radio Network.

Red Sox skipper Terry Francona will look to Brad Penny to keep the pitching momentum going from Wednesday’s win over the Oakland A’s. Penny is making his Fenway Park debut and also his first career start against the Orioles. In his first outing of the season, he gave up 3 runs over 6.0 innings on 2 walks and 5 hits to get the only Red Sox win over the Angels.

Jeremy Guthrie takes the ball from Captain Kirk Dave Trembley. Guthrie is 1-2 in 8 games (7 starts) with a 3.43 ERA against the Red Sox and is 0-1 with a 3.93 ERA in 3 career starts at Fenway Park.

After a enjoying a day off after a 2-4 west coast road trip, the Boston Red Sox get back to the business of playing some baseball at Fenway Park. As we saw the road wasn’t very kind to the Sox so let’s hope a little home cooking is what the Red Sox need to get their record over .500 during this 9-game homestand.

It won’t be easy though with the second place Baltimore Orioles (sounds funny saying that, sorry Anthony) coming town for 4-games, then the Minnesota Twins for 2 and the hated New York Yankees for a 3-game set next weekend.
