Green’s Error Costs Red Sox In 3-2 Loss

There’s probably no one on the Boston Red Sox that feels worse than Nick Green after his error cost them the game.

Franklin Gutierrez knocked in Ronny Cedeno from second base in the bottom of the 9th to give the Seattle Mariners a 3-2 walk-off win over the Red Sox in front of 40,833 at Safeco Field in Seattle.

After the Red Sox left George Kottaras, pinch-running after a Jason Varitek double, stranded at second, Ramon Ramirez came on for Hideki Okajima in the bottom of the 9th.

Boston Red Sox shortstop Nick Green throws wildly to first base in an attempt to get Seattle Mariners' Ronny Cedeno out at first in the ninth inning of a baseball game Sunday, May 17, 2009, in Seattle. Green was charged with an error and the wild throw allowed Cedeno to reach second base on the play, setting Cedeno up to score the game-winning run to give the Mariners a 3-2 win over the Red Sox. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)He started the inning with a strikeout of Kenji Johjima and then got Yuniesky Betancourt to line out to Mike Lowell, who made an amazing grab. Cedeno reached when Green’s throwed sailed into the stands giving Cedeno second base. The Red Sox elected to intentionally walk Ichiro Suzuki to face Gutierrez who knocked in the game winner as Bay’s throw to the plate was just a little late.

The Red Sox finished up the road trip at 2-4 and the loss drops them to 22-16 on the season. The Mariners improve to 18-20.

Justin Masterson gave the Red Sox a quality start in what should be his last start before moving back to the bullpen. He went 6 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 9 hits while recording 6 strikeouts. He didn’t walk anyone.

Manny Delcarmen allowed a hit and had a strikeout in an inning of work while Hideki Okajima struck out 1 in 2 innings. Shockingly, Ramirez was charged with an earned run although I highly suspect that will get changed.

Jason Varga got the start for the Mariners and went 5 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits and 3 walks. Once again the Mariners bullpen was strong as Sean White, Mark Lowe and David Aardsma combined to give up 1 hit,  2 walks and had 5 strikeouts over the final 3 2/3 innings.

J.D. Drew and Green both led the Red Sox with two hits each with Drew adding an RBI. Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 13 games with his only hit of the afternoon while Dustin Pedroia, Jeff Bailey and Varitek had the other hits with Varitek driving in the other run.

Boston Red Sox's Jason Varitek hits an RBI sacrifice fly off of Seattle Mariners pitcher Jason Vargas in the second inning of a baseball game against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, May 17, 2009, in Seattle. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)Vargas started the 2nd inning by getting Mike Lowell to fly out.  Drew followed with a single and went to second when Betancourt made a throwing error. Bailey singled to shallow left to load up the bases for the Captain who hit a sac fly to bring in Drew to put the Red Sox out front 1-0.

The game became quickly tied in the bottom half when Russell Branyan took Masterson deep to lead off the inning. Masterson recovered to get the next two outs but then Betancourt doubled.  He would come into score when Cedeno tripled to deep left center to put the Mariners up 2-1.

Drew tied the game up in the 4th inning with a lead off home run.

Both teams had numerous chances to score the rest of the game but in the end it was the error that cost the Red Sox the game.

The Red Sox will head back to the east coast now as they leave the west coast behind for the rest of the 2009 regular season. They are off tomorrow and will host the first place Toronto Blue Jays in a 3-game set starting Tuesday night.  Tim Wakefield will make the start for the Red Sox and he’ll be opposed by Brian Tallet.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/17

The Boston Red Sox will look to leave the left coast this afternoon with series win over the Seattle Mariners. This is the last time the Red Sox will be on the west coast this season.

The game this afternoon will start at 4:10 PM EDT and will be televised in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Mariners television market you can catch the game on Fox Sports Northwest. And if the television isn’t your cup of tea, you can catch the game on one of the many affiliates of the Red Sox Radio Network.

Justin Masterson will make his last start for the Red Sox (for now) as Daisuke Matsuzaka is expected back in the rotation later this week. On the season, Masterson 2-2 with a 4.89 ERA in 9 games (5 starts). He has made two appearances (1 start) against Seattle and is 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA. His lone Safeco Field appearance came out of the bullpen in 2008 where he didn’t allow a run in 2 2/3 innings. Masterson has gone at least 5 innings in all 14 of his big league starts.

Jason Vargas will make his first career start against the Red Sox this afternoon for the Mariners. On the season, he is 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA in 3 appearances (1 start). Vargas came to the Mariners from the Mets back in December of 2008 in a 3-team 10 player trade.

Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe said on her Twitter account that the Red Sox pitchers are taking batting practice in anticipation of interleague play. The Red Sox pitchers won’t have to bat this weekend since they are home against the New York Mets. The first time they will have to bat in a game is June 12th when they are in Philadelphia. She also said the Josh Beckett and Jon Lester have hit home runs during BP so far.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 5/17

The Boston Red Sox got a strong outing from Josh Beckett and he got some support from the bats of Jason Bay, Jason Varitek and Jeff Bailey in a 5-3 win over the Seattle Mariners.

The outing from Beckett was his longest since his Opening Day start against the Tampa Bay Rays and it was also the first time a Red Sox starter had gone 7 innings since Jon Lester did it back on May 4th. This time out, he was able to limit his mistakes to one bad pitch, a 2-run home run to Yuniesky Betancourt.

It was nice to see the quality outing from him though. Hopefully he’s able to build from this and return to the form that we all know he has. Also, let’s hope that his start builds so momentum for the other starters going forward as right now as the Red Sox starting pitchers are statistically the worst in the American League.

Bay has been everything the Red Sox had hoped for when they picked him up at the trading deadline last season. He’s continuing to put together a career season in his walk year and will most likely be paid a king’s ransom during the offseason.

We know that Theo Epstein and Bay’s representatives put off the talks for a contract extension this past offseason and we do know that the Red Sox under Theo do not like to talk contract extensions during the season. Well it might be time to put that to bed at least for Bay before the price to re-sign him becomes too high.

Ultimately though, it’s in the hands of Bay who’ll have to decide if he wants to stay in Boston for whatever price the Red Sox put on him. I couldn’t see why he wouldn’t. He’s fit in nicely with the team given the lofty expectations of some because of the steroid user he had to replace. And that’s not to mention the love he gets from Red Sox Nation.

In case you were wondering, Bay is hitting .305 with a team-leading 11 home runs and 40 RBIs. He has an OBP of .444, a slugging percentage of .648 and a OPS of 1.092. The 11 home runs is good for a tie for third in the American League and the 40 RBIs is good for second in the AL. He’s been walked 31 times and that’s also good for second in the AL.

One last thing, if you’re interested in bidding on the pink cleats of David Ortiz or Josh Beckett from the Mother’s Day game, head over to Reebok.com. The auction ends today. Beckett’s cleats right now are at $160 and Big Papi’s are at $280.

Beckett Puts An End To Losing Streak In 5-3 Win

Jason Varitek is welcomed home by Julio Lugo as both men scored on a Varitek homer in the second inning - DEAN RUTZ / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Josh Beckett gave the Boston Red Sox seven strong innings and the offense backed him up with three home runs in a 5-3 win over the Seattle Mariners in front of 42,589 at Safeco Field in Seattle.

The win for the Red Sox snaps a 3-game losing streak as they improve their record to 22-15 while the Mariners fall to 17-20.

(AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)Other than one bad pitch to Yuniesky Betancourt, Beckett (4-2, 5.85) was outstanding tonight going 7 innings for the first time since his Opening Day start. He allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5.

As it has been all season long, the Red Sox bullpen was outstanding yet again.

Hideki Okajima went 2/3 of an inning allowing a hit while Ramon Ramirez retired the only batter he faced. Jonathan Papebon worked the 9th, allowing a hit in picking up his 10th save of the season.

The bad luck for Garrett Olson continued against the Red Sox on Saturday night as he was tagged for 5 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings. Three of those hits were home runs.

The Red Sox actually only had 6 hits in the game. Jason Bay and Mike Lowell’s hits were both of the 2-run homer variety while Jeff Bailey had a solo home run. Jacoby Ellsbury’s hit ran his hitting streak to 12 games while Julio Lugo also had a hit before leaving the game with tightness in his hip/groin. Mike Lowell had the other hit.

Olson started off strong in the 1st inning as he struck out Ellsbury and got Dustin Pedroia to foul out. He walked J.D. Drew and then Bay took a first pitch fastball and planted into the left field seats for a 2-run homer and 2-0 lead.

Umpire Jim Wolf is seen at left. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)With one out in the 2nd, Lugo worked a one-out walk. Varitek followed with a 2-run homer to push the lead to 4-0.

Beckett got the first out in the 2nd inning before Wladimir Balentien singled. Kenji Johjima grounded out to third with Balentien moving up to second. Then Beckett’s one mistake of the night happened as he left a fastball out over the plate that Betancourt put into the left field seats to cut the Red Sox lead to 4-2.

Adrien Beltre reached on a Lugo throwing error to start the 4th. The error proved to be costly as Russell Branyan doubled down the line in left to score Beltre. Branyan advanced to third on the throw home. The Red Sox brought their infield in and got a great diving stop and throw by Lugo off the bat of Balentien for the first out. Pedroia made another nice play off the bat of Johjima for the second out and Beckett got Endy Chavez to line out to escape any further damage as the Red Sox lead was at 4-3.

Bailey provided the final margin when he led off the 5th with a solo home run.

It was good to see Beckett pitch well once again. Hopefully this is a start for him and the Red Sox starters who are statistically the worst in the American League.

The Red Sox will look to finish off their final west coast swing of the season with Justin Masterson, who is making his final start before heading back to the bullpen when Daisuke Matsuzaka returns later in the week. He’ll be opposed by Justin Vargas. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM EDT.

After another tough loss on the west coast last night against the Seattle Mariners, the Boston Red Sox look to regroup and grab a win tonight and tomorrow before heading back home to Fenway Park on Tuesday for a matchup with the first place Toronto Blue Jays.

The game tonight will start at 10:10 PM EDT and will be televised in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Mariners television market you can catch the game on Fox Sports Northwest. And if the television isn’t your cup of tea, you can catch the game on one of the many affiliates of the Red Sox Radio Network.

Josh Beckett will look to improve on his last start where he gave up 3 runs in 6 innings tonight for the Red Sox. On the season, Beckett is 3-2 with a 6.42 ERA in 7 starts. In 4 career starts against the Mariners, Beckett is 3-1 with a 3.29 ERA. In his lone Safeco Field appearance back in 2007, Beckett picked up the win as he allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings.

With Erik Bedard nursing a tight right hamstring, Garrett Olson will step in for him and make the start tonight for the Mariners. On the season, Olson has no record with a 2.57 ERA out of the bullpen. Olson has not had very much success against the Red Sox in 6 career starts as he is 0-4 with a 7.76 ERA. All of those starts came as a member of the Baltimore Orioles as this is his first start in a Mariners uniform.

Amalie Benjamin reported on her Twitter account that Daisuke Matsuzaka will return to the Red Sox rotation this week. She also said that Kevin Youkilis will DH on Monday in Pawtucket and be in the lineup on Wednesday for the Red Sox when he’s eligible to come off the DL.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 5/16

Boston Red Sox David Ortiz, left, sits on the bench next to the water cooler during a baseball game against the Seattle Mariners Friday, May 15, 2009, in Seattle. The Sox finally benched their slumping slugger on Friday night. Manager Terry Francona left the five-time All-Star out of the lineup for the series opener at Seattle, a day after he went 0-for-7 and stranded 12 base runners--tying a team record--in an extra-inning loss at the Los Angeles Angels. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)

Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona finally made the decision to give David Ortiz some mental health days before yesterday’s loss to the Seattle Mariners. Normally you would say the Red Sox missed his bat but that just hasn’t been the case this season.

Francona wouldn’t commit to Big Papi in the lineup at all this weekend but the Red Sox players are still standing behind him.

“I think your personality has a lot to do with it,” Mike Lowell said. “I think the fact that he cares so much makes it almost worse because you can see that he’s trying, but he’s not in synch. If you don’t feel in synch, it seems like every good pitch you get you foul it off. Hitting with two strikes every at-bat. Then after you foul off a pitch they make their pitch.

“I think we all still have a lot of confidence in David. I don’t buy the bat speed’s slow, I don’t believe in four months you lose bat speed. I don’t buy the Manny [Ramírez] deal. I just think he’s maybe not seeing the ball well; that triggers other things.”

As for the game itself, there’s not much to say other than Jon Lester didn’t stay focused. He had a sure-fire double play ball hit to him and he hesitated to make the throw to second and barely got the runner at first. In the end, it left him frazzled and he left a few pitches up in the zone, the last one was hit into the right field seats by Ichiro Suzuki.

The Ichiro home run ended the night for Lester and the Mariners bullpen shut them down as former Red Sox reliever David Aardsma closed the door on them in the 9th even though the final out off the bat of Jason Bay came about two feet short of giving the Red Sox the lead.

But it wasn’t to be and the struggles for the Red Sox continued on the left coast. Thankfully all that ends after tomorrow’s game.
