Moseley Replaces Elliott At UConn

When Jamelle Elliott left the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team to take the head coaching job at the University of Cincinnati, she left a void in Geno Auriemma’s coaching staff.

Marissa Moseley - University of Minnesota PhotoInstead of hiring someone that has ties to the UConn program, Auriemma has decided to go outside of the program as he has announced that he has hired Marisa Moseley from the University of Minnesota.

“Marisa is an outstanding young coach who will be a perfect fit here at UConn,” Auriemma said. “She has outstanding people skills, and her experiences at Minnesota have prepared her well for the challenges she will face at Connecticut.

“Marisa will be a terrific coach on the floor as well as an excellent recruiter. I’m thrilled to have her on our staff, and our players will be as well.”

Like Elliott did, Moseley will work with the post players. She graduated from Boston University in 2004.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 5/18

Seattle Mariners' Mike Sweeney, left, and Ronny Cedeno look toward a mid-field team celebration as Boston Red Sox closer Ramon Ramirez walks to the dugout Sunday, May 17, 2009, after Cedeno scored on a single by Franklin Gutierrez in the ninth inning of a baseball game in Seattle. After a very frustrating loss yesterday to the Seattle Mariners and even more frustrating 2-4 west coast swing, the Boston Red Sox return home to Fenway Park tomorrow night where they’ll take on the first place Toronto Blue Jays for 3 games before the New York Mets come to town.

It was Nick Green’s throwing error that would ultimately do in the Red Sox yesterday. Green has made 8 errors on the season and up until yesterday, none of them had been costly.

Ever since they traded Nomar Garciaparra and brought in Orlando Cabrera then didn’t resign him, the shortstop position has been a bit of a black hole for the Red Sox. They tried Edgar Renteria in 2005 and that experiment failed miserably. They ultimately found success with Alex Gonzalez during the 2006 season but in 2007, they brought in Julio Lugo and we’ve had to live with him sucking on the field.

Jed Lowrie filled in at times for Lugo in 2008 and we thought the hole had been plugged. The pair entered spring training this season in a competition for the starting shortstop position only to have Lugo go down with a knee injury, handing the job to Lowrie.

Lowrie’s played solid defense and played through a wrist injury last year only to have said wrist affect him at the plate this season and require surgery. Green’s done an admirable job at shortstop and we all know how Lugo has been.

But how long will it be until Theo Epstein goes out and finds a shortstop that can give them good defense and a decent bat at the plate. Or will that be Lowrie when he returns in a month or two from his wrist injury. One thing’s for certain, defense and good pitching win championships and we’re solid in those areas other than shortstop.

On a programming note, things should now start to get posted at normal times in regards to this post now that the Red Sox are back on the east coast. Also, I will be in North Carolina from Friday to Sunday morning so the I probably won’t be doing much with the site in those days. I will do what I can and I’ll be back in time for Sunday afternoon’s game against the Mets.

Gruden Replaces Kornheiser On Monday Night Football

Monday Night Football on ESPN

Tony Kornheiser’s fear of flying finally has caught up with him as this year’s Monday Night Football schedule would have seen him flying all the time. So he decided to step down from his gig on Monday Night Football on ESPN.

“I am totally grateful for the MNF opportunity that I truly enjoyed the last three seasons,” he said. “I feel we got better each year. My fear of planes is legendary and sadly true. When I looked at the upcoming schedule it was the perfect storm that would’ve frequently moved me from the bus to the air. I kept looking at the schedule the past month and wanted to find a way to quietly extricate myself.”

“If I could handpick a replacement of a football guy, I would cast a net and drag in Jon Gruden,” Kornheiser added. “He is the two things you most want — smart and funny — and has the two things I don’t — good hair and a tan. I love PTI and am looking forward to continuing to yammer and yodel with Wilbon until the end of time.”

He has been replaced by former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden who let was go by the Bucs on January 16th.

Magic End Celtics Repeat Title Hopes

Boston Celtics: The Orlando Magic put the Boston Celtics in a big hole early on and it was a hole the Celtics were never able to dig out of as they lost 101-82 in front of a packed house at the TD Banknorth Garden. The Magic now advance to the Eastern Conference Finals against the LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Former UConn Husky Ray Allen led the Green with 23 points while Paul Pierce had 16.  Glen “Big Baby” Davis added 13 points while Rajon Rondo had 10 point and 10 assists.  Hedo Turkoglu paced the Magic with 25 points while Rashard Lewis had 19. Dwight Howard was a monster again with 12 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Without Kevin Garnett and Leon Powe, the Celtics were forced to the brink for the second straight series. Unfortunately this time it didn’t work out. Great run though for the Green. [ESPN.com]
