Lester Spins Gem To Give Red Sox Sweep of Rays

There was a little concern about Jon Lester throwing on Sunday afternoon after throwing 23 pitches on Friday night before the rainout. Lester pretty much erased any of those doubts though.

Rays Red Sox BaseballLester went eight shutout innings, allowing two hits to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 4-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in front of 37,271 at Fenway Park in game 2 of a day/night doubleheader.

It’s the fifth straight win for the Red Sox (84-58) while for the Rays (72-71), it’s their eleventh straight loss. The Rays fall 12.5 games behind the Red Sox in the wild card standings. The Red Sox pick up a half game on the Yankees with the two wins on Sunday and are now just seven games back. The Texas Rangers are three games behind and the Seattle Mariners are eleven games behind pending the outcome of their doubleheader on Sunday night.

In his last nineteen starts since May 31st, Lester has been the best pitcher in all of baseball. During that time, he is 10-2 with a 2.02 ERA. He was in a groove all game long as he had excellent command and location of his pitches. Plus his velocity was right there too. His cutter was virtually unhittable.  He did give up three walks but recorded seven strikeouts to raise his record to 13-7 with a 3.29 ERA.

Billy Wagner, who would have been in for the save had Jason Bay not wrapped one around Pesky’s Pole in the eighth inning, gave up two hits in the ninth but also had two strikeouts.

James Shields was strong early on but faded towards the end of his six innings. He gave up three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six.

Rays Red Sox BaseballThe only hit and run Lance Cormier allowed in his 1 1/3 innings was the home run by Bay. Rhode Island native Dan Wheeler struck out one in 2/3 of an inning.

The two members of the starting nine without hits were Jacoby Ellsbury and Alex Gonzalez. Mike Lowell knocked in a run while Jason Varitek’s hit was good for 2 RBIs that gave the Red Sox a 3-0 lead. J.D. Drew, batting cleanup in the nightcap, reached base all four times with a single, three walks and two runs scored.

The Red Sox will enjoy a day off on Monday before the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim come to Beantown in a possible Division Series matchup. Daisuke Matsuzaka will make his return to the Red Sox rotation on Tuesday night and he’ll be opposed by John Lackey.

Afternoon Doubleheader Red Sox Delight – 9/13

BOSTON - APRIL 8: Jon Lester #31 of the Boston Red Sox throws against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park, April 8, 2009, in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)

After Dustin Pedroia’s two-run homer gave the Boston Red Sox a 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in game 1, the two teams are back at it again in the back end of the doubleheader.

The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. and the game will be televised on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rays television market, you can catch the game on Sun Sports. And if the television isn’t your cup of tea, you can catch the game on one of the many affiliates of the Red Sox Radio Network.

After throwing 23 pitches on Friday night before the game was called, Jon Lester will be back on the mound in the second game of the doubleheader for Terry Francona. Lester has made 28 starts this season and is 12-7 with a 3.44 ERA. He’s made four starts this season against the Rays and is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA. In eleven career starts against the Rays, he is 5-2 with a 4.50 ERA. Lester is 5-3 with a 3.39 ERA in 12 starts at Fenway Park this season.

James Shields was also the scheduled starter on Friday night and will start again this afternoon. He’s made 29 starts this season and is 9-10 with a 4.02 ERA. He’s made three starts this season against the Red Sox and is 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA. Shields is 3-6 with a 5.40 ERA in eleven career starts against the Red Sox. He’s lost all five career starts at Fenway Park and has a 9.00 ERA there.

Dustin Pedroia’s two-run homer in the bottom of the 8th inning was the difference as the Boston Red Sox went on to a 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in front of 38,228 at Fenway Park in game 1 of a day/night doubleheader.

Joey Gathright pinch-ran for Big Papi and went to third on a Jacoby Ellsbury sacrifice bunt. Pedroia then took a pitch from Garza and drove it the opposite field into the Red Sox bullpen for a 2-run homer.

Jonathan Papelbon worked around a 1-out single by Akinori Iwamura and struck out the side to pick up his 36th save of the season in the 9th.

It’s the fourth straight win for the Red Sox as they improve to 83-58 on the season. For the Rays, it’s their tenth straight loss and fall to 72-70.

The New York Yankees are currently playing the Baltimore Orioles and the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners will attempt to play their doubleheader later in Arlington, TX.

It was a pitcher’s duel for most of the game between Clay Buchholz and Garza.

Buchholz was at his best once again as he held the Rays hitless for 3 2/3 innings. His changeup was nasty again and he had good command and location with all of his pitches.  He allowed one run on five hits over seven innings with three walks and recorded five strikeouts.

Hideki Okajima was perfect out of the Red Sox bullpen in the 8th as he set the side down in order.

Garza went 7 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts. He didn’t walk anyone and threw 118 pitches.

(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)Besides the 2-run homer, Pedroia also doubled. Victor Martinez had two hits and an RBI and also made a great defensive play in the 7th when he blocked the plate to prevent a second run from scoring.  Jacoby Ellsbury, Casey Kotchman, Rocco Baldelli, Josh Reddick and Ortiz had the other hits on the afternoon for the local nine.

These same two teams will be back on the field at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in game 2 of the doubleheader. James Shields will start for the Rays and he’ll be opposed by Jon Lester.

Late Morning Red Sox Delight – 9/13

Athletics Red Sox Baseball

After a rain-shortened game on Saturday night, the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays are back out to the field just twelve hours after last night’s 9-1 Red Sox win at Fenway Park. The two teams will play a separate admission doubleheader today.

The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. and the game will be televised on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rays television market, you can catch the game on Sun Sports. And if the television isn’t your cup of tea, you can catch the game on one of the many affiliates of the Red Sox Radio Network.

Clay Buchholz makes his 12th start of the season this afternoon in Game 1. He is 5-3 with a 3.92 ERA and is riding a 3-game winning streak. He’s faced the Rays once this season and is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA (1 ER/6.0 IP). He’s made three career starts against the Rays and is 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA.

Mr. Red Sox killer Matt Garza makes his 29th start of the season and is 7-9 with a 3.85 ERA. This will be his sixth start against the Red Sox and he is 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA. In eleven career regular season starts, Garza is 5-1 with a 3.18 ERA. He is Is 3-1, 3.60 ERA in five career starts at Fenway Park.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 9/13

Boston Red Sox's Alex Gonzalez leaves the field for a rain delay as the grounds crew works on the field during a baseball game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park in Boston on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009. (AP Photo/Winslow Townson)

Rain once again played a part in the game between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays. But this time, they were smart enough to delay the game at the start and wait for a bigger window.

The rain began in about the 4th inning and became heavier as the night wore on. It was coming down good in the top half of the 5th and once Josh Beckett got out of the inning, the game was official. But they played on. The Red Sox went quietly in the bottom of the 5th with the rain still coming down hard.

In the top of the 6th, Evan Longoria led off with a double and slipped across second base. That was enough for crew chief Randy Marsh to see and called for the tarp. About 50 minutes later or so, the game was called and the Red Sox were victorious 9-1.

As of late, we had been watching Beckett struggle with his command and location. In his last start, he had really started to turn the corner in becoming the dominant Beckett of old. Last night it looked as though he had come full circle as he had good life on his fastball and had regained the command of his breaking stuff.

And when Beckett has all of that working, we see a dominating performance like last night. The key for Beckett now is to be able to keep that going in the rest of his starts going forward.

When the Red Sox acquired Alex Gonzalez from the Cincinnati Reds it was to shore up the defense at shortstop. They didn’t get him for his bat but would take anything they could from him. So far it’s been pretty good.

He’s made just one error in 24 games but the story is what he has done at the plate. With the Red Sox, Gonzalez is hitting .295 with four home runs and eleven RBIs and a stolen base. That stolen base came last night and it was his first since the 2006 season. He also had another two hits last night and drove in three with a bases clearing double.

With the win last night, the Red Sox were able to cut the New York Yankees, who lost to the Baltimore Orioles, lead in the AL East to 7.5 games. The Texas Rangers lost to the Seattle Mariners last night so the Red Sox now have a three game lead over the Rangers in the wild card standings. The Mariners are ten games back and the Rays are 10.5 games back essentially making this a two horse race.

It’s going to be a long day of baseball at the Fens this afternoon as the Red Sox and Rays will play two games at noon and 5 p.m. The game at noon is a replay of Friday’s game and tickets for the Friday game will be honored at noon.  The second game at 5 p.m. is the game that was scheduled for 1:35 PM and those are the tickets that can be used.

Evening Red Sox Delight – 9/12

Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett delivers to Oakland Athletics designated hitter Jack Cust in the first inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Monday July 27, 2009. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

After a rainout last night, the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays will try it again tonight at Fenway Park, weather permitting of course.

Tonight’s game is scheduled to start at 7:10 PM and the game will be televised on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rays television market, you can catch the game on FOX Sports Florida. And if the television isn’t your cup of tea, you can catch the game on one of the many affiliates of the Red Sox Radio Network.

After struggling in his previous four outings, Josh Beckett was a little better but was undone by one bad inning his last time out. He’s made 28 starts this season and is 14-6 with a 3.87 ERA. He’s made four starts against the Rays this season and is 1-1 with a 5.70 ERA. In fourteen career starts against the Rays, he is 6-4 with a 3.79 ERA.

Highly regarded Rays pitching prospect Wade Davis makes just his second big league start for the Rays tonight. In his first outing, he allowed one run over seven innings and got a no decision as the Rays bullpen imploded late. He did have nine strikeouts in his debut.

Here is a press release from the Red Sox about the weather situation tonight.

The current weather forecast (provided by the Red Sox private weather service, Meteorlogix) in the vicinity of Fenway Park calls for the possibility of rain showers in the area during the afternoon and evening hours.

The Fenway Park gates will open at the regularly scheduled time of 5:10 p.m., and the Red Sox are hopeful that tonight’s game with Tampa Bay, which is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., will be played. However, the Red Sox want to alert our fans to the current forecast and to the possibility of delay.

This forecast is of course subject to change as the day progresses. Additional updates will be provided as necessary.

Here’s a look at the radar in the Boston area.

A dejected UConn fan sits with his head in his hands after the Huskies blew a 10-0 lead against North Carolina Saturday afternoon and handed the Tar Heels a 12-10 victory in the home opener at Rentschler Field - John Woike/Hartford Courant

It was a disastrous fourth quarter for the UConn Huskies as the No. 19/19 North Carolina Tar Heels scored twelve unanswered points to beat UConn 12-10 in front of 38,087 at Rentschler Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the score tied 10-10 and 1:32 remaining on the clock, UConn’s Dan Ryan was called for holding in the end zone. The result of the play was a safety that gave the Tar Heels the lead for good. The Huskies then went for the onside kick and recovered as Alex Molina snatched the ball out of the air to give the Huskies another life.

UConn took over on their own 31 and Cody Endres hit Brad Kanuch for 13-yard gain. The next play went for six yards as Endres hit Isiah Moore to put the ball at the 50. After two incompletions by Endres, Randy Edsall called time out. By doing this, North Carolina was also able to set up their defense and they brought the heat as Quenton Coples sacked Endres to finish off the game.

For the first two and half quarters, this game was a defensive struggle as neither offense could really get anything going on the ground or in the air. The only scoring in the first half came on a Dave Teggart 47 yard field goal for UConn.

The Huskies got things going in the third quarter as they were able to drive down the field and get a Jordan Todman touchdown. After that though, it was a different story. The Huskies lost Zach Frazer to a knee injury and the offense never got into sync.

Plus the UConn defense, playing without captain Scott Lutrus, was strong for the first three quarters. Then they completely disappeared in the fourth. North Carolina was able to string a few big plays together and drive down the field to get a field goal and a touchdown.

After two games, I’m still not sold on this offense. Like a fine wine, the offense needs time to gel as a unit. Now with the injury to Frazer, it could be more frustration for the Huskies on the offensive side of the ball. This new no-huddle offense was supposed to bring balance but with 35 running plays and 26 passing plays, it’s not there yet. They only finished with 196 yards of total offense, 124 of that through the air.

UConn falls to 1-1 on the season while the Tar Heels improve to 2-0.

Offensive Player of the Game:

Jordan Todman had 66 yards rushing on 18 carries and one touchdown.

Defensive Players of the Game:

This one is a tough call as there are four Huskies deserving of the honor, Lawrence Wilson, Greg Lloyd, Jr., Jesse Joseph and Lindsey Witten. Because of that, I’m going with co-players of the game in Wilson and Witten. Wilson had eleven tackles, two of them for losses and a sack. Witten had another three sacks and seven tackles in all.

Turning Point(s) of the Game:

1. Losing Zach Frazer to a knee injury in the third quarter changed the game for UConn offensively. After he left, the Huskies never really got into any type of flow.

2. Dan Ryan’s holding penalty in the end zone late in the 4th quarter gave the Tar Heels a 12-10 lead. After UConn recovered the onsides kick, Cody Endres was sacked on 4th and 4 in UNC territory.
