Serena Williams Enters The Carl Everett Crazy Hall of Fame

Serena Williams of the U.S. yells at a line judge after being called for a foot foul during her semi-final match against Kim Clijsters of Belgium at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York, September 12, 2009. Clijsters won the match 6-4 7-5, which ended in controversy when Williams was called for a foot-fault on a second serve to go match point down. Please welcome Serena Williams to the Carl Everett’s Crazy Hall of Fame for threatening a line judge who called her for a foot fault at the 2009 US Open in Flushing Meadows, NY in her semifinal match against Kim Cljisters.

Williams upon being called for the foot fault said “I feel like taking this ball and jamming it down your (expletive) throat”. She then continued to argue her case with other officials who gave her a second fault which caused her to lose the match.

After going all ghetto in which earlier between sets she smashed her racquet, Williams denied threatening the judge and declared she never had a fight in her life.

Funny it sure the hell didn’t look like it. You be the judge for yourself.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 9/14

Jon Lester - Globe Staff Photo / Jim Davis

The Boston Red Sox got two stellar performances from Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester on their way to a sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park on Sunday. They also got a strong rain-shortened strong start by Josh Beckett on Saturday night.

The Red Sox picked up a 1/2 game on the New York Yankees and are seven games behind them in the AL East standings with twenty games to go. The Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners split their doubleheader last night which means the Red Sox picked up a game on each of them in the wild card standings. The Rangers are now four games behind while the Mariners are clinging on for dear life as they are eleven games out.

While Buchholz didn’t factor into the decision in a game one yesterday, a late run negated his chance at win, he was outstanding on the bump. He had  good life on his fastball, excellent command and location of all of his pitches. His changeup was just downright nasty as it has been over his past five starts.

The Red Sox knew what they were doing when they left Buchholz in the minors to mature a little more. He’s making them look good now with his pitching. Unless Daisuke Matsuzaka is lights out in his final starts of the season, the Red Sox playoff pitching rotation, assuming they get there, would be Beckett, Lester and Buchholz. And if all three continue to pitch like they did this weekend, there’s no telling how far they can go.

Like Buchholz in game 1, Lester was dealing in game 2. He also had good command and location on his pitches plus some life on his fastball. His cutter kept the Rays hitters at bay all throughout the game. If it weren’t for Beckett, Lester would be the ace of this staff. He’s good enough to be a number one starter on just about any team in baseball.

Lester’s been one of, if not, the best pitchers in baseball since May 31st. He’s gone 10-2 with a 2.02 ERA. Had it not been for a slow start to the season, he would probably have more than the thirteen wins he has now.

The Red Sox will enjoy a nice day of rest before returning to Fenway Park tomorrow night. Daisuke Matsuzaka will make his first big league start since June 19th as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim come to town in a  possible Division Series matchup.

Frazer, Griffin Out For At Least Two Weeks

UConn quarterback Zach Frazer sits on the sidelines with his right knee wrapped after leaving the game in the third quarter against North Carolina Saturday afternoon. UConn had an early lead but the Tar Heels came back late in the fourth quarter for a 12-10 victory. (JOHN WOIKE / HARTFORD COURANT / September 12, 2009)

UConn Huskies head coach Randy Edsall held his weekly day after game press conference and updated the local media about the health status of quarterback Zach Frazer and tight end Ryan Griffin.

While the news isn’t bad, it’s not really that great either as both Frazer and Griffin will be out for at least two weeks. This means both will miss the Baylor game next Saturday and the home game against Rhode Island the following Saturday.

From Chip Malafronte of the New Haven Register:

Zach Frazer is out this week, and probably next week with a right knee injury, Edsall said. Cody Endres starts and Mike Box is the backup. No surgery is necessary, and it’s not season-ending. But that’s all Edsall would divulge. “He got hurt on the one play he scrambled, he came back and threw one high and that was the worst he threw all day,” Edsall said. “He threw some good balls and was doing good things. It’s disappointing to see that happen to him.”

Ryan Griffin will also miss this week and probably next week with a back injury. No specifics from Edsall, other than no surgery is needed and he’s expected back before the year is through. Corey Manning moves up to backup with John Delahunt the starter.

We all saw Endres struggle with the offense in Saturday’s loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels. You have to wonder if Edsall and Joe Moorhead will simplify the offense for Endres.

Let’s hope Endres can come around quickly. Otherwise it’s going to be a long Saturday afternoon/evening in Waco, TX.
