Ryan Boatright Named To 2015 Bob Cousy Watch List

From UConn:

Springfield, Mass. – University of Connecticut senior guard Ryan Boatright (Aurora, Ill.) has been named as a candidate for the 2015 Bob Cousy Award, as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

Bob Cousy AwardThe annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in men’s college basketball. Over 35 candidates have been nominated for the 2015 Bob Cousy Award.

Boatright, the 2014 American Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year, averaged 12.1 points a game and 3.5 rebounds for the Huskies last season. The Connecticut standout was named to the All-Final Four Team and finished his 2013-14 campaign second on the team in steals (61) and assists (131.)

This committee is made up of top college basketball personnel including members of the media, head coaches, media relations contacts and Hall of Famers.

From UConn:

STORRS, Conn. – For the second consecutive season, senior forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) and junior forward Breanna Stewart (Syracuse, N.Y.) were selected to the Associated Press Preseason All-America Team, as announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier this week, the pair of teammates were named to the American Athletic Conference Preseason First Team, as the Huskies were picked as the favorite to win the league. UConn was tabbed as the nation’s preseason No. 1 team by the AP before cruising to an 89-point victory over West Chester in its 2014-15 exhibition opener on Nov. 2.

Stewart enters her junior campaign after leading the team with 19.4 points and 2.8 blocks per game in UConn’s 2013-14 national championship season. Mosqueda-Lewis made 26 starts and notched 19 double-figure scoring games in an injury-shortened junior campaign. She posted the program’s third-ever triple-double in the Huskies’ NCAA Second Round victory over Saint Joseph’s on March 25. The three-point sharpshooter saved her best for the postseason, earning a spot on the American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team after posting 14.7 points and shooting 47.4 from beyond the arc. In addition, Mosqueda-Lewis was tabbed as the Lincoln Regional Most Outstanding Player after averaging 17.3 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 51.0 percent in the Huskies first four NCAA Tournament victories

2014-15 NCAA Women’s Basketball Rankings – Coaches Preseason Poll

coaches-poll-logo

The NCAA Women’s Basketball USA Today Coaches Poll came out on Monday and just like the AP Poll, the UConn Huskies are the preseason favorites.

They are joined in the top five by the South Carolina Gamecocks, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Tennessee Volunteers and Texas A&M Aggies.

There are no other teams from the American Athletic Conference ranked in the top 25. The South Florida Bulls are the only team from the American among the others receiving votes.

During the season, we’ll be published both polls together in one post on Tuesdays. The AP Poll comes out on Monday while the USA Today Coaches Poll comes out on Tuesday. Yeah, I don’t get it either.

If you are a UConn Huskies football fan, y’all know the significance of the No. 6 uniform.

Jasper Howard MemorialIt was the uniform number of the late Jasper Howard who tragically lost his life in 2009 hours after a game against the Louisville Cardinals.

Over the years, his No. 6 has been worn by his closest friends on the team and for the past two seasons by Jhavon Williams, a Florida native like Howard. His spirit has lived on with the saying, “PLAY EACH PLAY LIKE IT’S THE LAST PLAY YOU WILL EVER PLAY.”

On Saturday at halftime of the game of the eventual win against the UCF Knights, a memorial with the No. 6 for Howard was unveiled.

Video: Diaco Would Like To See the “Civil Conflict”

Rivalries are born, they aren’t created. Unless you are UConn Huskies football coach Bob Diaco who would like to see a rivalry be born between his program and the UCF Knights.

During his postgame press conference after the win against UCF, Diaco talked about how he would like to the start “Civil Conflict” with the Knights. And by “Civil Conflict”, he meant a rivalry game with them.

And when he said it, he meant no disrespect towards the UCF football program.

Oh by the way, he’s even willing to pay for the trophy himself.

Watch below as Diaco talks about the “Civil Conflict”

During his postgame wrap Sunday, he expanded on the remarks.

“What’s interesting is now that I’ve been in it for a little while here, in this conference, it’s an exciting conference and UCF becomes a conversation because they’re awesome, because I have such admiration and respect for them,” Diaco said. “Watching Coach O’Leary’s team and trying to prepare against them, you’re thinking what a contest this is going to be if we’re prepared.”

“I know he’s been doing it for 11 years without change, so it’s not going to change in the future and I know where we want to go and where we are going to go, so I thought, what an awesome contest it would be to kind of create a rival.”

“Obviously it takes two to tango, we’d need cooperation on their part, but to me that’s fun,” he said. “It spices things up and not in a negative way, but a positive way. I think it adds to the overall enjoyment for the fans and the universities and creates some spice and some pizzazz.”

While I like the idea, it is hard to create a rivalry. It might be better to look down the road and try to get something similar to this going with the UMass Minutemen, with whom they play in 2016 and 2017.

The two teams have a rivalry that dates back to 1897 and was played every year from 1952-1999. The two teams met as FBS opponents in 2012 when UConn beat UMass 37-0. Overall, UMass leads the rivalry 36-34-2

Wolf Pack Hang On For 4-3 Win Over Sharks

By Zachary Grenier

Hartford, CT, November 2, 2014 – The Hartford Wolf Pack escaped with a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon over the Worcester Sharks at the XL Center.

Hartford Wolf PackHartford drew first blood when the Bourque brothers capitalized on a power play opportunity with 8:42 gone in the first period. Ryan Bourque carried down to the right faceoff circle and looked across the crease to find Chris Bourque, who beat Worcester goaltender J.P. Anderson to the glove side.

J.T. Miller got in on the action just 2:38 later, when he finished another pass across the front of the crease, this one from defenseman Mat Bodie.

The scoring was not done for the Wolf Pack in the first period. Just as a Hartford power play was expiring, Danny Kristo let fly from the same faceoff dot that Chris Bourque capitalized fro, and fired a wrist shot that again beat Anderson glove side.

“Our starts are something that we’ve really tried to key on,” said Miller. “We have to make sure that we don’t get too comfortable. We got outshot handily, even though I thought we were playing well.”

While Hartford was outshot 39-18 at the end of the game, the teams were at a stalemate in the second period.

“I thought we made some real good plays early (offensively) and then we tried to force things as the game went on,” said Hartford coach Ken Gernander.

A lot of the credit for the stalemate was due to the play of Hartford goaltender Cedrick Desjardins, and his ability to come up with the big save.

“He was a big part of contributing part of our win tonight,” said Gernander. “We didn’t do enough to generate offense or to alleviate time spent in our defensive zone for the last two periods of the game. So now you’re relying on your defense, your penalty killing and your goaltending.”

Desjardins made a few huge saves for his teammates, especially on the penalty kill where he faced several point-blank chances from the slot and slammed the door shut.

In the third period, the Pack came out firing, with Jesper Fast putting up his first goal of the season just 28 seconds in to play to make it 4-0.

Worcester foiled Desjardins’ shutout bid with 8:08 remaining in the third period, when Ryan Carpenter found the puck in front of the net and put it home for his second goal of the season.

The third period push continued for the Sharks when Freddie Hamilton cut the Hartford lead to just two with 3:13 left in the game.

“He (Desjardins) held them off for quite a while there. If they’re able to get one earlier in the game there and then the second and certainly a third, it could certainly be a whole different scenario or a whole different outcome,” said Gernander.

Tyler Kennedy really took the Pack down to the wire when his second goal of the season made it a one goal game with just 1:12 left in regulation.

“If we face adversity, we see the guys who want to fight through the true adversity and that’s what we did,” said Desjardins. “We have a lot of gamers in that locker room and a lot of guys with experience, so we never panic.”

Next up for the Wolf Pack is a “school day special” morning game this Wednesday, November 5 against the Albany Devils. The Pack and Devils face off at 11:00 AM at the XL Center on Wednesday, and that’s another chance to take advantage of the Wolf Pack’s “Click It or Ticket Family Value Pack”. The Family Value Pack features two tickets, two sodas and two hot dogs, all for only $35.

Tickets for all 2014-15 Wolf Pack home games are now on sale at the XL Center ticket office, on-line at www.hartfordwolfpack.com and by phone at (877) 522-8499. Wolf Pack tickets start as low as $12 for youth 12 years old or younger.
