Maya Moore Named To Big East Honor Roll

UConn Huskies junior All-American Maya Moore was named to the Big East Honor Roll on Monday for her performance in last week’s 2-0 week.

In the two wins, Moore averaged 15.5 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, 2.5 steals and three blocked shots.

In the win over West Virginia, she had 15 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and two steals. In yesterday’s win over Louisville, Moore had 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and five blocked shots.

The UConn women are back in action on Wednesday night when they head to Chicago for a Big East matchup with the DePaul Blue Demons.

The game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. and will be televised locally here in Connecticut on CPTV. The game is also available on the internet for a fee through Hoop Streams. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can listen to the game on the WTIC/UConn Radio Network.

Cardinals Are No Match For UConn Women

The UConn Huskies women’s basketball team headed to Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY on Sunday for a rematch of last year’s national championship game against the Louisville Cardinals.

It wasn’t that much of a rematch as the Huskies did what they’ve been doing all year to teams, they completely dominated the Cardinals in an 84-38 win. The Huskies have now won eleven games this season by more than 40 points.

It’s the 62nd straight win for the Huskies who improve to 23-0 (10-0 Big East) and they will keep a firm hold on the No. 1 spot when the rankings come out this week. The struggling Cardinals fall to 11-12 (3-7).

Maya Moore added 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots. Caroline Doty rounded out the Huskies in double-digits with 11 points while Meghan Gardler had nine points off the bench.

Lorin Dixon led the Huskies with 10 rebounds and four assists to go with her two points.

The Cardinals, who were playing without one of their better players in Desiree’ Byrd (ACL), were paced by Keisha Hines’ nine points. Monique Reid added six points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

The score was close early on as the Cardinals trailed by just two points at 11-9 with 16:12 to go. Then the Huskies just poured it on as they went on a 22-2 run that started off with a Doty three-pointer.

The run ended when Keisha Hines went on a 5-0 run of her own to make the score 33-16. Doty started a 21-2 run to close the half with a three-pointer as the Huskies held a 54-18 lead at the end of the first half.

The Huskies started off the second half on an 8-0 run and never looked back from there as head coach Geno Auriemma brought in the reserves.

Louisville obviously isn’t the same team that they were last year but there was nothing they could have done to stop the hot shooting of the Huskies in the first half (57.1%).

The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday night when they head to Chicago to take on the DePaul Blue Demons in a Big East matchup. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. and will be televised locally here in Connecticut on CPTV.

Huskies Thwart Blue Demons Comeback In 64-57 Win

With their NCAA Tournament hopes fading in the cold of a New England winter, the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team were in desperate need of  a win. They had lost three straight games and hosted one of the bottom feeders of the Big East in the DePaul Blue Demons on Saturday night.

While it wasn’t pretty, the Huskies held off a Blue Demons comeback at the end in a 64-57 win in front of 10,167 at Gampel Pavilion. The win for the Huskies (14-8, 4-6 Big East) ends a three-game losing streak. They are now 3-3 with head coach Jim Calhoun, who is still out on medical leave but is expected back soon. The Blue Demons fall to 8-15 (1-10) on the season.

Stanley Robinson, sporting a new hair cut, added 10 points and led the Huskies with seven rebounds. Gavin Edwards came off the bench to score 10 points. Kemba Walker and Alex Oriakhi both chipped in with nine points while Ater Majok had a career-high five blocked shots to go with his six points and four rebounds.

Will Walker led all scorers with 24 points on 6-of-9 shooting on three-pointers. Mac Koshwal added 12 points and five rebounds while Eric Wallace led the Blue Demons with seven rebounds to go with his six points and four steals.

UConn started out slowly as they trailed by six at 11-5 at the first media timeout. An Edwards layup cut the Blue Demons lead to three points at 15-12 but DePaul followed with the next five points to open their lead up to eight points.

The Huskies then started their comeback as they went on an 11-3 run to tie the game up at 23. They followed that with an 11-4 run to open up a seven point lead at 34-27 heading into the locker room.

UConn built their lead to nine points early in the second half before the Blue Demons started their rally. They worked that nine point lead down over a ten minute span and took an one point lead at 52-51 on a Devin Hill jumper. During the Blue Demons rally, the Huskies went seven minutes without a field goal.

After a Robinson turnover, Walker made a key steal and a layup to give the Huskies the lead for good with 4:54 to play. The Huskies would hold the Blue Demons to just six points the rest of the way as they hit their free throws down the stretch.

A win is a win at this point and a conference win is even much better at this point. The Huskies just don’t look like the team that beat then No. 1 Texas and in their tough losses to Kentucky and Duke.

They once played their hearts out but something is missing. Yes, Calhoun is still out but this team seems to lack the killer instinct. Give credit to DePaul though. They came to play and never gave up.

The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday night when they head to the Carrier Dome to take on No. 3/4 Syracuse Orange. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m and will be nationally-televised by ESPN as part of Rivalry Week.
