Red Sox News & Notes – 4/23

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester(notes), left, shakes hands with outfielder Mike Cameron(notes), right, after the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Los Angeles Angels, Friday, April 22, 2011, in Anaheim, Calif.

The Boston Red Sox are beginning to play like they were expected to at the beginning of the season. Although the hitting has been suspect at times, the starting pitching over the last seven games has been outstanding.

Red Sox starters are 6-1 with a 1.17 ERA over those last seven games with the only loss coming to Oakland on Tuesday night. Riding the strength of the excellent starting pitching, they won their last three games, including last night’s 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Last night was no different as Jon Lester started the game by striking out the first four batters he faced. He did have some difficulties though when he allowed his first hit as he had a little trouble pitching out of the stretch. He was trying to paint the corners and wasn’t getting the calls from the home plate ump which ran his pitch count up.

The way he started though with the four strikeouts, one would have thought he’d go the full nine innings. But he was only able to throw six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while finishing the game with eight strikeouts to run his record to 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA.

It’s been nice to see Lester be able to put his early year struggles from the past behind him and pitch like the ace he has been after May during previous seasons.

Although he didn’t really throw the ball all that badly, Matt Albers made his first appearance after returning from the DL and allowed one run on two hits. Bobby Jenks, pitching in his third straight game, had a rough outing as he gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk. Jonathan Papelbon, also pitching in his third straight game, picked up his third straight save, giving him five so far in 2011.

While Carl Crawford continues to struggle at the dish (0-for-4), the Red Sox did get some timely hitting last night. Jacoby Ellsbury came through with a rare hit with a runner in scoring position (2-for-13 last night), knocking in Jarrod Saltalamacchia after he had doubled earlier in the third inning off of Angels starter Dan Haren. A Peter Bourjos error in the fourth off the bat of Crawford allowed The Legend of Jed Lowrie and J.D. Drew to score.

Drew would bring in the eventual winning run in the 6th after Lowrie doubled and went to third on a Vernon Wells error.

The Red Sox are definitely playing much better baseball than earlier in the season. Sure the hits aren’t coming with RISP, but the pitching has been great. And the bullpen has been much better as well. If the Red Sox can continue to play like this, the 2-10 start to the season will be a distant memory.

And in case you’re wondering, the Red Sox are only a 1/2 game out of third place in the AL East and just 3.5 games behind the Yankees for first.

NFL Contingency Plan for Lockout

In case the lockout now over 40 days and counting, pushes into the fall and jeopardizes the start of the NFL regular season the league has made some contingency plans.

NFL LockoutAt this time the NFL could kickoff on Week 4 (Oct 2/3) and still get in all the regular season games and the playoffs with some adjustments to the schedule.  After that they start losing games from the schedule.

First they have blocked out the hotels, Lucas Oil Stadium and other facilities for an additional week.  Currently Super Bowl XLVI is scheduled for Sunday February 5 in Indianapolis.  The league also has the stadium on February 12th if need be.

The second thing that would happen is that the normal week off between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl would be cut as it was in the case of the 9/11 tragedy in 2001.  The AFC and NFC title games would then be played on the original date of the Super Bowl February 5th.

Those two changes would allow for the missed games in Week 1 (September 8-12) and Week 2 (September 18-19) to be made up at the end the regular schedule.

In the case of the Patriots here would be the potential last two weeks of play under this scenario:

  • Week 15 January 9 @Miami 7p MNF
  • Week 16 January 15 SAN DIEGO 4:15p

This must leave the Chargers wondering how they can get this season started on time as no west coast team, especially a Norv Turner team, wants to be in Foxboro in mid-January with a potential playoff spot on the line.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

The third thing that would happen is that all the teams who would have faced each other in Week 3 (September 25/26) were scheduled with the same bye week.  So the Week 3 games would be made up over the course of the normally scheduled six bye weeks.

So your rescheduled Week 3 would look like this:

  • New England @ Buffalo moved to Week 7
  • Jacksonville @ Carolina moved to Week 9
  • Denver @ Tennessee moved to Week 6
  • Houston @ New Orleans moved to Week 11
  • Detroit @ Minnesota moved to Week 9
  • New York Giants @ Philadelphia moved to Week 7
  • Miami @ Cleveland moved to Week 5
  • San Francisco @ Cincinnati moved to Week 7
  • New York Jets @ Oakland moved to Week 8
  • Baltimore @ St. Louis moved to Week 5
  • Kansas City @ San Diego moved to Week 6
  • Atlanta @ Tampa Bay moved to Week 8
  • Green Bay @ Chicago moved to Week 8
  • Arizona @ Seattle moved to Week 6
  • Pittsburgh @ Indianapolis moved to Week 11
  • Washington @ Dallas moved to Week 5

The losers in this scenario are the players who would no longer have that much needed and waited for bye week plus two television networks, NBC and ESPN.  Normally Pittsburgh and Indianapolis would have been the Sunday Night Football game on NBC while Washington and Dallas would be the Monday Night feast on ESPN.

Obviously in Week 11 and Week 5 there are already games scheduled for Sunday Night and Monday night.  So a few things could happen.  Week 11 is the first week of the flex games, NBC could chose to flex the Week 11 Sunday night game Eagles @ Giants for the Steelers and Colts.  I don’t see that happening as both games have potential to be huge in playoff battles.  So NBC may have to look at either a Saturday night game or a Sunday night doubleheader of 7p and 10p.  The issue with this is that the 7p kickoff would interfere with broadcast windows of the 4:15p games. But NBC would have to be willing to make some kind of concession in order to avoid missing revenue from a missed game.

In ESPN’s case it is a little easier even though Week 5 isn’t a flex week and MNF games are locked into the schedule.  The best way for ESPN to not miss the revenue from a missed game is to have the NFL allow them to schedule the game for a Monday Night Football doubleheader with a 7p and an 10p start like they do in Week 1.  The currently scheduled Week 5 MNF game is Chicago @ Detroit.  The Lions play in the Eastern Time zone while Dallas is in the Central.  So they would give the Bears and Lions a 7p start and move the Redskins and Cowboys back to 10p eastern which is a 9p kickoff in the Big D.

While the NFL didn’t say what would happen with those affected Sunday and Monday night games I am sure they have some sort of plan in effect with the networks.

Hopefully it doesn’t come down to all of this and we have football on time this fall.  But when the ego’s of billionaires and millionaires are battling each other over money and other issues I am choosing to remain pessimistic to an on time start to the 2011 NFL season.

From a Championship High To Getting High: Coombs-McDaniel Busted For Weed Possession

Jamal Coombs-McDaniel

Every year during UConn’s Spring Weekend, there is usually a plethora of people who get arrested for various offenses. On the first night of UConn’s 2011 Spring Weekend, there were 11 arrests. And included among them was UConn Huskies men’s basketball sophomore guard Jamal Coombs-McDaniel.

Coombs-McDaniel was busted along with Shakwaan Ishmale Simpkins and Stanley Darnel Winn by UConn Police Thursday night. The trio was found to be in possession of 5.6 grams of marijuana, a marijuana grinder and cigars used to smoke marijuana. They were charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

There was no comment from the UConn men’s basketball program other than to say they are aware of the arrest.

Coombs-McDaniel was part of the UConn Men’s 2011 NCAA Championship run although he didn’t play as much over the final four games due to a knee injury that resulted in surgery two weeks ago. He did play in all 41 games this season, averaging 5.6 points, 2.6 rebounds in 16.6 minutes per game.

He has also spent a good portion of his two years at UConn in the doghouse of Jim Calhoun.  Given his tumultuous relationship with Calhoun, you have to wonder if this is the last straw for Coombs-McDaniel.

Valentenko Brings to Mind Game’s Best Shot-blockers

By Bruce Berlet

Anticipation. Instincts. Timing. Guts.

CT WhaleIn some ways, blocking shots in hockey is even more dangerous than goaltending. Neither is for the faint of heart, but at least a goalie has plenty of padding and a facemask.

But a willingness to sacrifice your body for your goalie and your team can earn a player a lot of Brownie points, especially at playoff time.

Connecticut Whale defenseman Pavel Valentenko parlayed all those qualities into a personal first/best in Game 3 of the Atlantic Division semifinals against the Portland Pirates. With his team already two games down in the best-of-seven series and clinging to a 3-1 lead, Valentenko noticed goalie Dov Grumet-Morris was out of the net as AHL Rookie of the Year Luke Adam wound up hoping to slam in a rebound.

As Adam readied to fire from about 10 feet in front, the thought of scoring very much in his head, Valentenko dove across the crease and took Adam’s laser to the abdomen. The gritty Russian keeled over in pain from the shock of the shot, but the Pirates were awarded a penalty shot with 5:38 left.

“It was the first time I did that,” Valentenko said of his dive into the crease to prevent a certain goal. “I saw Dov was out of the net, so I knew I had to do something.”

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Grumet-Morris then stacked his pads to make a brilliant save on the penalty shot by Mark Parrish, who has played in 722 NHL games, sparking the Whale to the first of two 3-1 victories that tied the series. Despite blowing two three-goal leads Thursday night, the Pirates took a 3-2 series lead with a 5-4 victory on Parrish’s power-play goal at 2:44 of the third period that came 1:08 after Brodie Dupont had tied it and then committed a tripping penalty five seconds later. Game 6 is Saturday night at 7 at the XL Center.

“Pavel is probably one of the better shot blockers in the league,” Grumet-Morris said.

Grumet-Morris’s running mate in net, Cam Talbot, went even further, saying, “Pavel blocks shots so well it’s like having three goalies.”

Valentenko said he has patterned himself after a defenseman named Yahamov (he couldn’t remember his first name) who played for the Russian Super League team in his hometown of Nizhnekamsk, Russia, and nine-year NHL veteran Anton Volchenkov of Moscow, who just completed his first season with the New Jersey Devils after being the Ottawa Senators’ first-round pick (21st overall) in 2000.

The 23-year-old Valentenko said he saw how Yahamov and others blocked shots when he started playing hockey as a youngster in Nizhnekamsk.

“All my hockey career I’ve tried to block as many shots as I can every game because then it’s easier for the goalie and better for the team,” said Valentenko, nicknamed “Tank” in training camp by New York Rangers coach John Tortorella. “Even when I was a kid I was staying in the net and blocking shots. My father said, ‘Be a goalie if you want.’ I didn’t want to be a goalie. I just wanted to protect the net.

“Yahamov was not a big star, but he was a hard-working guy on the penalty kill who blocked shots. Blocking shots came natural, and I think it helps the team. Actually you can learn it by trying to find a good position and see where a guy places his stick with the puck and block an area. I don’t know how to learn that. It’s instinct.”

Valentenko began to try to refine his instincts at his first Montreal Canadiens training camp in 2007 when several media members said he reminded them of Volchenkov. After that, Valentenko began watching Volchenkov on YouTube.

“I knew who he was, but I had never seen his games, never followed him,” Valentenko said. “I saw him block shots and save some goals. And we never play on the power play.”

On June 30, 2009, Valentenko, a fifth-round pick of the Canadiens in 2005, was traded to the Rangers with former Yale center Chris Higgins, defensemen Ryan McDonagh, a first-rounder (12th overall) in 2007, and former Springfield Pic defenseman Doug Janik for center Scott Gomez and former Hartford Wolf Pack players Tommy Pyatt and Michael Busto.

Grumet-Morris, Whale assistant coach J.J. Daigneault and defenseman Wade Redden, a 12-year NHL veteran who is adept at blocking shots more with craftiness, said Valentenko reminds them of the 6-foot-1, 235-pound Volchenkov, known as “The A-Train” and the “Russian Bear.”

Redden said Volchenkov and former Hartford Whalers defenseman Curtis Leschyshyn are the best shot blockers he has seen.

“ ‘Tank’ plays a lot like Volchenkov,” Redden said.

Grumet-Morris said he appreciates players who blocks shots, though it can be “a mixed bag.”

“Certainly blocking shots is a skill, but there are some shot blockers who are obviously better than others,” said Grumet-Morris, who considers Valentenko, the Minnesota Wild’s Greg Zanon, Pittsburgh Penguins Rob Scuderi and the Canadiens’ Hal Gill the best shot blockers he has seen. “‘Tank’ is a guy who has kind of perfected the art, and the one thing it says to me as a goalie and the team is he’s willing to sacrifice his physical health in order to help the team win. That helps to inspire and motivate other players to push themselves beyond what they normally would.”

Though a mistimed block can cause havoc for a goalie, Grumet-Morris said the positives of a shot blocker usually outweigh the negatives.

“So much goes on on the ice – there are so many tips and changes of direction – and what a lot of people don’t understand is goaltending is a lot about luck, it’s the luck of the bounce,” Grumet-Morris said with a smile. “We can do a lot of things as goaltenders to put ourselves in position to benefit from a good bounce. However, a bounce here and a bounce there, and it changes the game.

“At times, yes, you pay a price at an attempted block that screens you or tips that change directions, but that’s part and parcel of the game and you accept that and move on and hopefully you end up on the plus end of that margin.”

Daigneault, who is in his fourth season as a Hartford Wolf Pack/Whale assistant coach, said the art of shot blocking has changed since he began an 18-year pro career in 1984 after the Vancouver Canucks made him the 10th overall pick earlier in the year. He called himself “an unnoticeable shot blocker” because he never went down to block a shot, preferring to use a long stick and winning one-on-one battles with bigger forwards by fronting them in front of the net.

“Nowadays being in the (shooting) lane is really important, and something you can teach,” said Daigneault, who considers former Canadiens teammates Guy Carbonneau, Rod Langway and Brian Engblom the best shot blockers he has seen. “A lot of it is also about being willing to sacrifice the body, and it’s getting harder for defensemen to get shots through to the net. So they have to be proficient at moving laterally to get shots on net because on any team there’s always guys who are very good shot blockers.

“And there’s more pressure put being put on the point men on the power play. The penalty killers are overall more aggressive. Before a lot of teams just sat back in their box and let the power-play guys play on the perimeter. Nowadays there’s back pressure, there’s pressure when puck possession is in doubt, there’s more pressure all over the ice.”

Daigneault said Valentenko, McDonagh and former Wolf Pack defenseman Vladimir Denisov are similar in that he had to work with them on not getting out of position when they tried to block shots.

“The willingness to sacrifice their body for the team and their teammates was there, but at times, they had a tendency to take themselves out of the play,” Daigneault said. “I think ‘Tank’ used to go down a lot early in the season, but he doesn’t do that as much. He blocks the shot, but he’s more efficient now at blocking shots.”

Daigneault also helped Rangers defenseman Daniel Girardi when he first arrived in Hartford, and this season he led the NHL with 224 blocks.

Whale coach Ken Gernander said his picks for best shot blockers are Mike Keane, who played 1,161 NHL games and 443 AHL games with his hometown Manitoba Moose before retiring last season, and Manchester Monarchs defenseman Andrew Campbell. He also pointed out the Rangers’ tandem of center/captain/Trumbull native Chris Drury and former Wolf Pack players Girardi, Ryan Callahan and Marc Staal.

“A key to shot blocking is being able to anticipate where a play is going so you can get yourself in the shooting lane,” Gernander said. “And along with that, there’s a bit of timing. If you go down too soon, the guy doesn’t attempt the shot. Too late, and it’s too late. So you have to be able to anticipate and read the play. And there’s a lot more pressure, so the onus is on the defenders or penalty killers to be in the shooting lanes. Blocking a lot of shots is a strength of Valentenko’s game, and he does great job on the (penalty) kill.”

Pirates coach Kevin Dineen was known as a good shot blocker in an 18-year NHL career that included nine seasons with the Hartford Whalers, though he jokingly called it his “Flamingo move” while contouring his body as if dancing. But Dineen thinks so much of the importance of the skill that he occasionally has his Pirates practice blocking shots with tennis balls or foam Chuck-A-Pucks that fans toss between periods to raise money for charity.

“It’s one of those intangibles that go along with the game,” Dineen said. “It’s a hard thing to practice, but every once in a while you try to change things up. It’s a real art, and back in the old days, Coach Q (Chicago Blackhawks coach and former Whalers teammate Joel Quenneville) used to have shin pads that were stuffed full of cotton and a little wider, and my brother Peter used to wear ankle guards. There are different ways to earn a paycheck, but there’s certainly a talent to it.”

Dineen said Quenneville, Carbonneau and Bryan Marchment top his list of best shot blockers, and Derek Whitmore and Tim Conboy are the best on the Pirates. Conboy proved that in Game 2 when he blocked Francis Lemieux’s shot with his shin pad, the puck caroming into the neutral zone to set up a 2-on-1 that Whitmore converted off Brian Roloff’s pass for a 3-2 victory at 12:04 of overtime.

“We try to encourage all our guys to get out there and do it,” Dineen said. “Whitmore is a guy who has no fear when he plays and wants to get shot blocks. Then Conboy blocks one in the second game that sets up the winning goal, so it makes a difference.”

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/22

Dustin Pedroia(notes) #15 of the Boston Red Sox celebrates with Carl Crawford(notes) #13 after scoring a run on a sacrifice fly ball by Jed Lowrie(notes) in the 11th inning of the baseball game against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on April 21, 2011 in Anaheim, California. Red Sox defeated the Angels, 4-2.

While I was away for a few days, the Boston Red Sox finally picked up a road win when they split the series with the Oakland A’s. On Thursday night in Anaheim, CA, they made it two road wins in a row with a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 11 innings.

The season story for the Red Sox has been the alarming amount of base runners they’ve left stranded. It was no different on Thursday night as they left 15 men on base. At one point, they had been walked 11 times and yet had only two runs to show for it.

Jacoby Ellsbury put an end to the LOB story in the 6th inning when he knocked in two with a single to right. And Adrian Gonzalez did the same thing when he plated J.D. Drew with a double in the 11th. Jed Lowrie also added to the cause when his sacrifice fly brought in Dustin Pedroia with the final run of the evening.

While Lowrie has been stealing headlines lately with his plate prowess, the MVP of the 2011 season so far has been Pedroia.

He was heavily involved in the Red Sox offense on Thursday night as he was on base five times on three hits and two walks. He also prevented a double play in the 11th when he got caught in a rundown between third and home and ended up getting back to the bad after avoiding the tag of Macier Izturis. This proved key as it gave Lowrie hit the sac fly to provide an insurance run.

But Pedroia’s big play of the night came in the eighth inning when Erick Aybar led off with an extra base hit off of Daniel Bard. Pedey took Drew’s relay throw and nailed Aybar at third. There’s a saying in baseball. Never make the first or last out at third base and that’s what Aybar did. Pedey’s throw and Aybar’s boneheaded baserunning gaffe saved the night for the Red Sox.

All this talk about the offense and we haven’t even broached the night of Josh Beckett, who started the season as the fourth starter but has clearly been the best pitcher this season for the local nine. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and was pretty dominant throughout the night. Of course that was until Torii Hunter planted a ball amongst the trees in center field in the seventh.

Other than that though, Beckett was outstanding. While he had trouble throwing his curveball for strikes at times (latter innings), his cutter was downright nasty and was definitely his most effective pitch of the night. He commanded it well and it had a little more velocity then we’ve seen from Beckett in the past.

The LOBsters are definitely worrisome right now especially when you have performance on the mound like Beckett’s. He definitely deserved the win last night but in the grand scheme of things, it not about individual stats, it’s about the team W.

And the Red Sox will definitely take that as they look to climb out of the 2-10 hole they started the season with.
