Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/15

Jon Lester (L), Freddy Garcia (R)

The Boston Red Sox look for the sweep and more importantly the elusive .500 mark in tonight’s finale of a three-game set against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and you can watch the game on ESPN. You can also catch the game online at ESPN3.com. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Jon Lester looks to rebound after a tough start his last time out. He’s made eight starts in 2011 and is 4-1 with a 2.96 ERA. He has not faced the Yankees in 2011 and was 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA in four starts last year. Lester has enjoyed good success against the Yankees as he is 6-1 with a 3.28 ERA in 12 starts. Seven of those starts have come in the Bronx where he is 4-1 with a 1.99 ERA.

Freddy Garcia looks to get the Yankees back in the win column in his sixth start (seventh appearance). In six games (five starts), Garcia is 2-2 with a 2.61 ERA. He’s made an appearance against the Red Sox out of the bullpen this season allowing a run in one inning of work back on 4/10. In 17 career appearances (16 starts) against the Red Sox, Garcia is 8-2 with a 4.44 ERA. He’s never faced the Red Sox in New York.

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/15

NY Daily News & NY Post sports page covers for Sunday, May 15

Contrary to what you may have heard, especially from the New York and national media, there was a game last night between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Plus with all of the ballwashing of Derek Jeter going on in the FOX booth, you might not have even known the Red Sox were playing.

But they did and they made a statement behind a great performance from Josh Beckett in a 6-0 win.

When Beckett faced the Yankees earlier in the season, he allowed two hits in eight innings. Last night, he allowed two hits to the first two batters and it got you thinking that it might be a long night for Beckett and the Red Sox.

But that was far from the case.

Beckett settled down after that though. After those two first inning hits, he scattered just two more over his final five innings while striking out a total of nine batters and walking two. With the six shuout innings, he has now thrown 18 1/3 innings without allowing a run, which ties a personal best for him. It also dropped his ERA down to 1.75.

He was able to use all of his pitches last night. His cutter was nasty and that made his changeup and curve all the more better. This was the Beckett we’ve seen before.

I know I’ve said this once before this season but when Beckett is healthy like he is now, he can be one of the most dominating pitchers in the game. He doesn’t throw as hard as he did when he was younger but that doesn’t matter when his stuff was as filthy as it was last night.

Adrian Gonzalez struggled early last night against CC Sabathia but exacted some revenge in the 7th. It was funny too as when Gonzalez came to the plate, ESPN Boston’s Gordon Edes said on Twitter “I predict Gonzo gets him this time”. And sure enough, Edes was right as Gonzalez got his Ichiro on as he homered for the fourth straight game.

It’s also the eighth home run he’s had in the last 11 games. He now has nine home runs on the season as well an AL-best 34 RBIs. Gonzalez is also tied for 7th in the league in hitting at .325 with teammate Jed Lowrie.

Gonzalez could end up being the new Yankees killer just like Jason Bay was when arrived in Boston.

Speaking of Yankees killers, Dustin Pedroia continues to rake against Yankees pitching. He added another three hits last night and that might help him break out of his slump.

With the two straight wins over the Yankees, the Red Sox are now back to within a game of .500. But in the three times they’ve gotten that close this season, they haven’t been able to cross that bridge.

They have the right man on the mound tonight in Jon Lester to get there. They’ll now have to battle the weather gods and the Yankees to get there.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/14

Josh Beckett (L), CC Sabathia (R)

The Boston Red Sox continue their quest to .500 tonight after winning last night’s game in game two of a three-game set against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and you can watch the game on FOX in 71% of the country. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Josh Beckett returns to the scene of the crime where he injured his back almost one year ago today. He has made seven starts and is 2-1 with a 1.99 ERA. He has faced the Yankees once this season, allowing no runs in eight innings back on 4/10. He’s made 23 career starts against the Yanks and is 11-7 with a 5.90 ERA. He’s made 11 of those starts in the Bronx where he is 6-3 with a 5.63 ERA. He doesn’t have a decision in his last four starts, which ties a career-high.

CC Sabathia will try to get the Yankees back on track in his ninth start of 2011. In his previous eight starts, he is 3-2 with a 2.89 ERA. He was the loser against Beckett back on 4/10 when he allowed one run in 5.2 innings. He’s made 16 career starts against the Red Sox and is 6-6 with a 3.35 ERA. He’s made four career starts against the Red Sox at home and is 3-0 with a 0.91 ERA.

Video: Red Sox & Yankees Farm Teams Brawl

In a scene reminiscent of the 2004 brawl between Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek and New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, the Single-A South Atlantic League affiliates of the teams got into a brawl on Friday night.

Apparently there had been some bad blood from earlier games between the Greenville Drive (Red Sox) and Charleston RiverDogs (Yankees). So when Drive pitcher Miguel Celestino hit Slade Heathcott on the second pitch of the game last night, Heathcott took exception and went after Drive catcher Christian Vazquez.

The benches cleared and after the ensuing battle royale (seen below), Heathcott and Vazquez were ejected along Charleston reliever Kelvin Perez and Drive reliever Garrett Rau.

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/14

NY Daily News & NY Post back covers for Saturday, May 14, 2011

The last time that Clay Buchholz took the mound for the Boston Red Sox, rain interrupted his start. But instead of being done for the day, he endured the two hour rain delay by throwing three simulated innings and then came back out to give the Red Sox a total of five innings on that day to pick up the win.

Entering play Friday night, Buchholz hadn’t had too much success pitching in New York. He’d made three starts there where he was 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA. Given the fact that he had pitched well in his last two starts, it looked as though he might be able to put those New York demons to rest.

It was a vintage Buchholz performance on Friday night that helped his team to a 5-4 win over the Yankees to end a two-game losing streak.

Now I know vintage is a strong word considering the fact that Buchholz hasn’t been in the big leagues long but it was the Buchholz that we saw for almost all of last year. A confident one, one who could throw any of his arsenal of pitches for strikes.

And that’s exactly what he did to the Yankees lineup.

He mixed in all of his pitches and used his two-seam fastball to make the others effective. He garnered a team-high 15 swing-and-misses this season and within that he struck out seven batters. He would end up allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and the seven punchouts over the course of seven innings. His one mistake was to Russell Martin who took a Buchholz offering out of the park for a two-run homer.

With this start, Buchholz is 3-0 in his last three starts with a 1.93 ERA while striking out 15 in 18 2/3 innings. This is the Buchholz we’ve been waiting to see this season, you know the one who earned the four-year extension from his exploits last year.

On the offensive side of things, Adrian Gonzalez continues to rake. He homered again on Friday night, a mammoth blast into the second deck. He also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and the two RBIs he had on the night gives him an American League-leading 31. He also lead the AL in total bases and is now hitting .329 on the season.

Kevin Youkilis also exacted a little revenge against his “buddy” Joba Chamberlain by hitting an opposite field home run. You may remember back in 2007 when Joba buzzed Youkilis twice on consecutive pitches. While Youk said after the game, there wasn’t really a revenge factor, you know he was just saying that as to not provide any bulletin board material. I still think though that this little matchup will be interesting to watch if they face each other again down the road. After all, there’s still 14 games left between the two teams.

The road back to .500 continues tonight with Josh Beckett, who’s been the best pitcher the Red Sox have had all season. His record might not indicate that but he’s also been a victim of the bullpen.

Speaking of the bullpen, Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon both decided to make it interesting. But both prevailed in the end. That’s all that matters right now.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
