Red Sox News & Notes – 5/17

Boston Red Sox's Adrian Gonzalez celebrates after his game-winning, two-run double against the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Monday, May 16, 2011.

The weather last night at Fenway Park kind of can explain the start by Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. It was cold, dark, dreary and drizzly. And although we’ll never know how much him getting hit by the ball off the bat of Brian Roberts at the start of the game, things got brighter at the end.

You could have sworn it was sunny and in the 80’s by the end of the night though as the Red Sox completed an epic comeback as they rallied from six runs down to take an 8-7 walkoff win over the Baltimore Orioles. You may remember that four years ago, the Red Sox did the same thing in the “Mother’s Day Miracle”. After the game, NESN’s Tom Caron, called this the “Remy Returns Miracle” since NESN analyst Jerry Remy returned to the NESN booth for the first time since April 26th.

The Red Sox managed only five hits through the first five innings against Orioles starter Chris Tillman. But once Buck Showalter went to his bullpen in the 6th, things started to look up for the Red Sox as they mounted their comeback. They would score five runs in the 6th off of Michael Gonzalez and Jeremy Accardo.

J.D. Drew got things started with a single (he ended up at second on an error by Luke Scott). Drew came home quickly on a Jed Lowrie double. Carl Crawford would reach on an error by Mark Reynolds with Lowrie moving to third. Lowrie would score on a Jason Varitek single. Gonzalez would get Jacoby Ellsbury to fly out. Accardo would come in and get Dustin Pedroia to fly out and it looked as though the Red Sox rally might end there.

But Adrian Gonzalez would keep the inning going with a run-scoring single and then Kevin Youkilis followed that up with a bases-clearing double to cut the lead to 6-5. Clay Rapada would come in and walk David Ortiz but he got ended the inning by getting Drew to weakly ground out to second.

It didn’t take long for the Orioles to get a run back as Reynolds crushed an Alfredo Aceves offering to push the lead back to 7-5. The Red Sox would get the run back in the 7th when Lowrie tripled and came around to score on Varitek’s second RBI of the night. Aceves and Orioles reliever Koji Uehara would maintain the status quo, setting up the rally in the 9th for the Red Sox.

Orioles closer Kevin Gregg got Tek to fly out to start the inning. Ellsbury worked a walk and stole second with Pedroia at the plate. After a nine-pitch at-bat by Pedroia, he worked a walk setting the stage for Gonzo who took the first pitch he saw and put it off the monster for the walkoff double to win it for the Red Sox.

You may remember Pedroia’s 13 pitch AB against the Angels’ Jeff Weaver. This nine pitch AB against Gregg was equally as important. It forced Gregg to have to throw strikes against Gonzo which if you’ve been watching him this month, is not something you really want to do.

When it looked the Red Sox were down and out last night, they never gave up. It was a reminder of the 2003 and 2004 teams that never had any quit in them. They had a built up a ton of momentum over the weekend with the sweep of the New York Yankees and it looked like it would be lost.

But now the Red Sox find themselves with a four-game winning streak and chance to keep their rise in the AL East standings. They’ll need a solid start from Tim Wakefield tonight, who is filling in for John Lackey who went on the 15-day DL with a right elbow strain. They’ll also have to battle the elements as rain is forecast in the Fenway Park vicinity all day.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Video: Adrian Gonzalez Walkoff Wins It For Red Sox

Four years ago, there was the “Mother’s Day Miracle” when the Boston Red Sox completed an epic comeback win over the Baltimore Orioles. And on Monday night as NESN’s Tom Caron put it so eloquently, there was the “Remy Returns Miracle” thanks to the two-run walkoff hit for Adrian Gonzalez against those same Orioles.

Lackey Heads To DL; Atchison Back to Boston

Apparently besides the off the field issues, there was actually something wrong with Boston Red Sox pitcher John Lackey.

John Lackey #41 of the Boston Red Sox walks into the dugout after he was pulled from the game against the Los Angeles Angels on May 5, 2011 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. Before Monday night’s game with the Baltimore Orioles, the Red Sox placed him on the disabled list with a right elbow strain. Taking Lackey’s place on the 25-man roster is Scott Atchison who was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.

What’s funny about this is the fact that Atchison was seen in the Red Sox clubhouse before the game but skipper Terry Francona denied there was a roster move coming.

Atchison was spotted before tonight’s game in the Sox clubhouse, but Sox manager Terry Francona denied there was any roster move in the offing saying, “A liitle miscommunication. Atch was here to pick something up. It’s not a roster move. I didn’t even see him. I heard he was here.”

This will be Atchison’s second appearance with the Red Sox this season. And with Lackey going on the DL, it’s expected that Tim Wakefield will take his place in the rotation although there has been no official announcement just yet. Lackey is scheduled to start Tuesday’s game against the Orioles.

Bledsoe Earns Patriots HOF Nod

The New England Patriots have a new member of their Hall of Fame and it’s former quarterback Drew Bledsoe who was elected over his former coach Bill Parcells and lineman Houston Antwine.

Drew BledsoeBledsoe, the Number 1 overall pick in the 1993 NFL Draft, went on to become the franchise player Parcells and the team thought they were getting that day.  Both Parcells and Bledsoe were instrumental in the Patriots going from doormats to playoff contenders and finally onto Super Bowl Champions. In his first six seasons he led the Patriots to the playoffs four times.

Without the contributions of either much of what we as Patriot fans enjoy today would probably not have been accomplished.  Without Parcells, who knows if Bill Belichick ever gets hired in New England.  It was because of his time in Foxboro as an assistant on Parcells staff that the Kraft family got to know him.

Without Belichick there’s likely no Tom Brady.  It all comes back to Parcells and Bledsoe, Bledsoe and Parcells.

New England owner Robert Kraft said of Bledsoe:

“Drew Bledsoe played such an integral role in our efforts to rebuild the Patriots brand.  He gave fans hope for the future and provided many memorable moments during his record breaking career.”

Bledsoe, who came to New England from Washington State University, led the team to it’s second Super Bowl appearance in 1996 and along the way became the franchise leader in career passing attempts, completions and yards.

My favorite Bledsoe memory is of the last game he played in the 2001 AFC Championship game in Pittsburgh.  When after Brady got hurt he led the team to the Super Bowl with a gutsy performance normally reserved for starters, not back ups coming in cold. New England won that day 24-17 sending the hated Steelers home instead of to New Orleans as they had expected.

Bledsoe spent nine seasons with New England and threw 166 TD passes while winning 62 games and another 3 in the playoffs.  He also made 3 Pro Bowls as a Patriot, his first, in 1994, made him the youngest to ever play in a Pro Bowl he was 22 years old.

Bledsoe, when notified by Kraft of the honor said:

“Obviously, just a tremendous honor to be elected to the Patriots Hall of Fame.  Receiving the call from Mr. Kraft, honestly it was a bit emotional, more than I thought it would have been.”

Bledsoe will be inducted on Saturday September 17 along with Jon Morris, who was selected to the Hall of Fame by the Senior Selection Committee.  The event which is held at the Hall at Patriot Place is open free to the public.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/16

Chris Tillman (L), Daisuke Matsuzaka (R)

After a sweep in the Bronx that got them back to .500, the Boston Red Sox return home to Fenway Park for a seven-day, three team homestand beginning tonight with the Baltimore Orioles in a two-game set.

Tonight’s game is scheduled to begin at 7:10 p.m. (weather permitting) and will be televised on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you were wondering who would be with Don Orsillo tonight, Jerry Remy will be be back. If you live in the Orioles television market, you can catch the game on MASN. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Here is the weather report from the Red Sox for tonight’s game:

The current weather forecast (provided by the Red Sox private weather service, Telvent DTN) in the vicinity of Fenway Park calls for intermittent rain showers in the Fenway area during the late afternoon and early evening hours.

All Fenway Park gates will open as regularly scheduled at 5:40 p.m. with a limited opening on Yawkey Way at 5:10 p.m. The Red Sox hope that tonight’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, which is scheduled to start at 7:10 p.m., will be played. However, the Red Sox want to alert our fans to the possibility of a delay.

This forecast is of course subject to change as the evening progresses. Additional updates will be provided as necessary

Daisuke Matsuzaka has won three of his last four starts as he makes his eighth appearance (seventh start) of the 2011 season. In his previous seven games (six starts), Dice-K is 3-3 with a 4.64 ERA. He has not faced the Orioles in 2011 and was 1-2 with a 7.56 ERA in three starts last year against them. In his career, Dice-K has made nine starts against the Orioles and is 4-3 with a 5.73. Three of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 1-1 with a 3.44 ERA.

Chris Tillman looks for his second straight win in his eight start of 2011. In his previous seven starts, Tillman is 2-3 with a 6.15. He has made only one career start against the Red Sox and that came in 2010. It happened to be the shortest start of his young career after he was tagged for four runs on five hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/16

NY Daily News & NY Post back covers for Monday, May 16, 2011

When the 2011 MLB season got underway, no one in their right mind thought the Boston Red Sox would have a .500 record on May 16th. With all of the expectations surrounding this team, .500 talk should have been a thing of early April with it in the rearview mirror in May.

But here we are on this dreary day (at least in Connecticut) celebrating the fact that the Red Sox have made it to .500. And given that it came against the New York Yankees, it makes it a little bit sweeter.

The Red Sox came into the series with the Yanks at 17-20 but after an uncharacteristic Jon Lester start on Sunday night, the Red Sox emerged with a 7-5 win and better yet, a sweep of the Yanks to get to .500. It was the first sweep of the Yankees in New York by the Red Sox since 2004. And we all remember what happened then.

Lester struggled early on with his command and needed 50 pitches to get through the first two innings. At that point, the Yankees were enjoying a 4-1 lead after Andruw Jones and Curtis Granderson had made Lester pay when he hung cutters to them. And while he didn’t seem all that comfortable going forward, he was able to settle down and throw 37 pitches over the course of the next three innings.

He would need 22 more pitches in his final inning of work but at the end of the nine inning game, he emerged with his fifth win of the season. That win also gave him the best winning percentage all-time at .718 (66-26) having 50 or more decisions.

The offense picked him up to help him to that mark.

Trailing 4-1 in the third, Kevin Youkilis mashed a 3-run homer off of Freddy Garcia to get the Red Sox back into the game. Two innings later, the red-hot David Ortiz hit a solo home run to put the Red Sox up for good at 5-4. They would get another run when Alex Rodriguez pulled a Bill Buckner. After the Yanks got a run back off of Alfredo Aceves, Jarrod Saltalamacchia added his first home run of the season to provide the final margin.

For Salty, it was his first home run of the season. It was also the first home run of the season for the much maligned Red Sox catchers. Only two teams in MLB didn’t have a home run from their catchers before last night’s game, the Red Sox and the Twins. Now it’s just the struggling Twins in that department.

Sure it hasn’t been fun at times watching the Red Sox. And while it might not have been fun on early on last night, it was great to see the Red Sox battle back. It’s something we’ve come to expect from them under Terry Francona as they never seem to lose their fight.

I’m sure we all thought when they fell behind last night, it was another case of here we go again. They get so close to the .500 mark only to lose a few games. But now they’ve bucked that trend and hopefully it’s only upward from here.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
