Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/28

Tonight’s game has been postponed. The two teams will play a split doubleheader tomorrow. The first game will be at 1:05 p.m. with the second one starting at 7:05 p.m.

Clay Buchholz (L), Andrew Oliver (R)

The AL East-leading Boston Red Sox look to keep the momentum going in game three of a four-game set with Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in the Motor City.

Tonight’s game is scheduled to begin at 7:10 p.m. and will be televised in 17% of the country on FOX.  And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Clay Buchholz looks for his fourth straight quality start in his 11th start of 2011. In his previous 10 starts, he is 4-3 with a 3.30 ERA. This is his second start of the season against the Tigers as he threw seven scoreless innings in receiving a no decision back on 5/18. He’s made five career starts against the Tigers and is 1-1 with a 2.23 ERA. Three of those starts have come in the Motor City where he is 1-0 with a 5.23 ERA.

Andrew Oliver gets the ball for Jim Leyland after being called up from Triple-A Toledo. In nine starts with the Mud Hens, he was 4-3 with a 3.31 ERA. This is his first appearance in the big leagues this year after making five starts last season. In those five starts in 2010, he was 0-4 with a 7.36 ERA. This will be his first career appearance and start against the Red Sox.

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/28

Boston Red Sox's Tim Wakefield throws during the first inning of a baseball game against the Detroit Tigers, Friday, May 27, 2011, in Detroit.

When you went to bed last night, the Boston Red Sox had beaten the Detroit Tigers 6-3 and just a bit later, the Boston Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0 to advance to the Stanley Cup. What was lost in all of that is the fact that with the win, the Red Sox were a ½ game ahead of the Yankees for first place in the AL East, pending the outcome of the Yanks game against the Seattle Mariners.

So when you woke up this morning, you may or may have not noticed that the Red Sox stood all alone in first place for the first time since July of 2009 thanks to the Mariners comeback win over the Yankees. And considering the Red Sox started the season 2-10, I certainly didn’t think it would happen so quickly. I knew it would happen eventually but just not in May.

But thanks to wins in 12 of their last 14 games, the Red Sox have climbed from the basement to first place. They are 18-7 in the month of May and scoring runs like they were falling out of the sky. The Red Sox have been putting up big innings early in the game forcing the opposing teams to get to their bullpens earlier than they may have wanted.

On Wednesday against the Indians, it was a seven-run first inning. On Thursday against the Tigers, it was a five-run second inning. And on Friday night against the Tigers, it was five-run third inning.

Jacoby Ellsbury got the third started with a solo home run off of Rick Porcello to knot the game at 2. Dustin Pedroia then walked and Adrian Gonzalez moved him over to second. They both came around to score on a Kevin Youkilis double. After David Ortiz flew out, the white-hot Carl Crawford brought in Youk with a 2-run homer to make it 6-2.

And that’s all they would need as Tim Wakefield put together another great start after settling down after allowing single runs in the first and second innings. When his knuckleball is on, it’s on and there’s really no stopping him.

After allowing three hits in the first two innings, he scattered two hits and two walks over the next five innings. He was never in any trouble either.

In picking up the win, Wake now has 195 career wins and 181 of those have come in a Red Sox uniform. Those 181 wins with the Red Sox puts him 11 wins behind Cy Young and Roger Clemens for the most all-time in Red Sox history.

With the uncertainty of Daisuke Matsuzaka returning to the rotation this season, Wake has certainly stated his case. In his two starts since Dice-K went on the DL, Wake is 2-0 and has allowed just three runs in on nine hits and two walks in 13.2 innings. And his “competition”, Alfredo Aceves, is doing great too.

In the four starts since Dice-K and John Lackey went on the DL, the Red Sox are 3-1 in the game started by Wake and Aceves. And if the Matt Albers meltdown doesn’t happen, they could have been 4-0 with both guys being 2-0.

It will be interesting to see what Terry Francona decides to do. But if you want to read into things, Aceves could head back to the pen or even Triple-A because Lackey is penciled in to return to the Red Sox rotation when Aceves is scheduled to pitch in early June.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/27

Tim Wakefield (L), Rick Porcello (R)

After putting up 14 runs in the consecutive games, the Boston Red Sox look to do it again tonight in game two of a four-game set with the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

Tonight’s game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. and will be televised in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Tigers television market, you can catch the game on FOX Sports Detroit.  And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Tim Wakefield makes his 13th appearance (fourth start) for the white-hot Red Sox. In his previous 12 appearances (three starts), Wake is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA. He didn’t face the Tigers earlier this season and had no record with a 9.00 ERA (2 ER/2 IP) in one appearance against the Tigers in 2010. He’s made 36 career appearances (23 starts) against the Tigers in his career and is 16-10 with a 4.25 ERA. In 16 games (11 starts) in the Motor City, Wake is 6-5 with a 4.93 ERA. More specifically, he’s made 11 appearances (seven starts) at Comerica Park and is 4-3 with a 4.19 ERA.

Rick Porcello will make his ninth start of 2011 for Jim Leyland’s Tigers squad. In his eight previous starts, Porcello is 4-2 with a 3.08 ERA. He didn’t face the Red Sox earlier in the season either and the last time he faced them was in 2009 when Youk charged the mound after being hit by Porcello. He’s made two career starts against the Red Sox and is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA (4 ER/5.1 IP).

Former CT Sun Margo Dydek Passes

RIP Margo Dydek

Former Connecticut Sun player Margo Dydek passed away early today (May 27) in Brisbane Australia at the age of 37.  She suffered a heart attack on May 19th and was taken to the hospital and placed in a medically induced coma, which she never came out of.

Born in Poland on April 28, 1974, Dydek went onto to become the #1 overall draft pick in the 1998 WNBA Draft by Utah Starzz.  She played with Utah until the franchise transferred to San Antonio and became the Silver Stars in 2003.

Before the 2005 WNBA season the 7 foot 2 inch center was traded to Connecticut for 1st round draft pick of the Sun that turned out to be Katie Feenstra.  She played with the Sun from 2005 through 2007 when she signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Sparks for the 2008 season.

Dydek, who also played pro ball in Europe, was currently coaching the Northside Wizards of the Queensland Basketball League in Brisbane Australia.

As the tallest women’s basketball player, she was prolific shot blocker, she holds the WNBA record for career blocks with 877 in just 323 games and led the WNBA in blocks nine times and blocks per game eight times.

Dydek leaves a husband and two young children and was actually pregnant with her third child when she was stricken.  She has many family members still in Poland and her sister, Kashka, who professionally for the now defunct ABL’s Colorado Explosion, still plays overseas.

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/27

Boston Red Sox's Carl Crawford, left, is congratulated by coach Terry Francona, center, after scoring from third on a Josh Reddick single during the eighth inning of a baseball game against the Detroit Tigers in Detroit, Thursday, May 26, 2011.

Don’t look now but it appears the Boston Red Sox are finally looking like the team general manager Theo Epstein envisioned before the start of the 2011 season.

After putting up two touchdowns in a 14-2 win over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday afternoon, the Red Sox did the same thing in a 14-1 rain-shortened win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon. Obviously the offense got the job done but the Red Sox also got another strong performance from Alfredo Aceves.

Aceves was the starter in last Saturday’s game against the Chicago Cubs only to watch Matt Albers have a rare 2011 meltdown. But luckily for Aceves, the offense made sure that wouldn’t happen on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the Red Sox put up seven runs in the first inning. They did it a little differently on Thursday putting up five runs in the second and two more in the third. They added single runs in the sixth and seventh and finished it off with five more in the eighth before the rains came.

Tigers starter Max Scherzer had been brilliant all season long. He came into the game with a 6-1 record with a 2.98 ERA and was 3-0 with 0.77 ERA at Comerica Park in six starts. When all was said and done, he left the game after two plus innings after allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks plus a strikeout. And his record stood at 6-2 with ERA jumping almost a full run to 3.86.

The big blow to Scherzer came in the second inning when Jacoby Ellsbury went deep for a 3-run homer to push the lead to 5-0. The Red Sox had scored two earlier runs after a David Ortiz single, Carl Crawford single, Drew Sutton RBI double and a Josh Reddick RBI single. They ended up chasing Scherzer from the game in the third after a Kevin Youkilis single, a walk to Big Papi and a 2-run triple by Crawford.

Speaking of Crawford, he continues to tear it up in May. After a four-hit game on Wednesday against the Indians, he followed it up with another four hits. He had hits in six straight at-bats (four Wednesday, two Thursday) before finally being retired in the fifth by Tigers reliever Adam Wilk, who happened to be making his MLB debut yesterday. He added two more hits in his final two ABs of the afternoon, including his second triple of the day and watched his average climb all the way up to .244. Considering where he started the season, .244 isn’t as bad as it may sound for someone making over $20 million a year.

Every member of the starting nine for the Red Sox had a hit.

Reddick, who was called up to replace Darnell McDonald who was placed on the DL with a sore quad before the game, had three hits and three RBIs in his 2011 Red Sox debut. Sutton was in for Jed Lowrie, who got the day off, and added two hits and two RBIs. Big Papi also had two hits while Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, Adrian Gonzalez and Jason Varitek each added one. Pedroia and Gonzalez also added RBIs.

Right now things are clicking on all cylinders for the Red Sox. I’m not sure I’d want to be facing them right now. They seem to be a bit more aggressive at the plate, not taking as many pitches as normal. But they are capitalizing on it right now and making the opposing teams pay for it.

Oh, and more thing. The Red Sox now find themselves in a tie for first place with the New York Yankees. Considering the awful start to the 2011 season, can you believe it?

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
