Evening Red Sox Delight – 8/13

Teckett (L), Felix Hernandez (R)

After coming back for the win last night, the Boston Red Sox look to do it again in the second game of a three-game set with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field tonight.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 10:10 p.m. and will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Mariners broadcast area, you can catch the game on ROOT Sports. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Josh Beckett takes the hill for the Red Sox tonight and hopes his mates provide him more than 3.17 runs of support in his 23rd start of 2011. In his previous 22 starts, Beckett is 9-4 with a 2.17 ERA. He picked up the win in his only start against the Mariners this year. In that start on July 23rd, he allowed one run over seven innings. He’s had good success in his career against the Mariners as he is 6-1 with a 2.87 ERA in eight starts. In three starts at Safeco Field, Beckett is 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA (4 ER/19.1 IP).

King Felix Hernandez makes his 26th start of the season for the Mariners. In his previous 25 starts, King Felix is 10-10 with a 3.31 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Red Sox this season and is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA (8 ER/13.1 IP). Hernandez has made 10 career starts against the visiting nine from Boston and is 4-2 with a 3.39 ERA. He’s made four of those starts at Safeco Field where he is 1-1 with a 4.78 ERA.

Notes From Patriots Camp – 8/13

In The Red Zone

The New England Patriots started the day off with a couple of roster moves.  They signed UDFA OL Zach Roth out of TCU.  They also released OL Chris Morris and DL Steve Williams.

The newly signed Roth didn’t last long at his first practice as he was actually carted off the field.  There of course was no word from the team on what the injury was.

Some other notes from the full pads practice, recently signed T Matt Light was on the field, mostly as an observer, he is no longer on the PUP list.  The offensive line was little thin today with Roth’s injury, Light not being involved yet and having Dan Connolly and Ryan Wendell out of practice.

That gave rookie OL Nate Solder plenty of practice time and he looks really impressive with his blocking techniques he just needs to get stronger to be able to fend off the larger defensive linemen in the NFL.

Some of the others missing practice included WR Taylor Price who appeared to ding up his ankle in the game on Thursday.  RB Danny Woodhead was also among the missing as his wife just gave birth to a baby girl.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Quarterback wise Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett took most if not all of the reps as Brian Hoyer seemed to just watch.  They may be letting his shoulder calm down after the game on Thursday.  It may also be that Mallett will start in Tampa Bay and they want him to feel more comfortable in the offense.  Brady looked exceptionally sharp, as there were far less drops and bad throws.

It also appears they have no one who can cover WR Wes Welker who appears 100% back from his ACL injury.  He looks as quick as ever and it looks like he was never even hurt.  This doesn’t bode well for opposing defenses.

The team worked on a lot of situational plays today especially the goal line and the 2-minute drill.

Rookie OL Marcus Cannon is progressing well and may get to practice soon.  He probably will not see any game time this season as he recovers from cancer.  He appears ticketed for the practice squad, which isn’t a bad thing.

The Patriots have a new Director of Player Development, Kevin Anderson.  In his new position Anderson will help players prepare for their football afterlife.  It’s important that with the short shelf life of the average NFL player that they decide what they want to do after they’re done playing.  Maybe Patriots Hall of Fame member Drew Bledsoe has some openings in his successful winery and coffee roasting businesses.

Patriots S Brandon Meriweather is not a suspect in the March shooting at an Apopka FL party he was hosting that saw two of his former high school teammates shot in the face.  The two former teammates both originally said Meriweather was the shooter but the police can not find any evidence to indicate that he was involved in any way.  Meriweather has refused to be interviewed by police as a witness, due to the fact that he fears for the safety of his legal guardians if he were to cooperate.  Police have said that without Meriweather’s help the case will most likely be removed from the active investigation list unless someone else were to come forward with information.

The Patriots also worked out a pair of players on Friday, K Rhys Lloyd and long snapper James Derth.  Apparently Matt Katula needs to be looking over his shoulder after that horrible snap on a PAT attempt Thursday against Jacksonville.

The Patriots will practice on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the Patriots Experience will be open from noon to 5 p.m.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/13

Josh Reddick(notes) #16 of the Boston Red Sox celebrates in the dugout after hitting a two-run homer in the sixth inning against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on August 12, 2011 in Seattle, Washington.

The Seattle Mariners home park of Safeco Field had only yielded 40 home runs all season long before last night’s game against the Boston red Sox. So it’s safe to say that Safeco isn’t a hitter’s park.

At the end of Friday night though, the Red Sox blasted three home runs but none was bigger than Josh Reddick‘s two-run homer in the 6th that would the Red Sox to an eventual 6-4 win.

With the win coupled with the New York Yankees losing to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Red Sox picked up a game on the Yankees in the AL East standings. That lead is now two games.

Early on it didn’t look the Red Sox would even have a chance. While he hadn’t lost in his last six starts (five wins, one no decision), John Lackey wasn’t exactly sharp. But what’s beginning to turn into the norm for Lackey, he settled down after a few roughing innings.

He gave up two runs in the bottom of the 1st but had the offense get them right back in the top of the 2nd on a David Ortiz mammoth blast and a Mike Aviles sacrifice fly. His struggles continued in the 2nd when he allowed another run and then again in the 4th. He would allow just two hits the rest of the way including two rare 1-2-3 innings which came back to back.

Lackey never really establish any sort of rhythm in the game. But instead of dwelling on the negatives of his outing, let’s look at the positives.

He looks healthy as his velocity has gotten a little higher over his little run. He’s now won six of his last seven starts. The main thing though is that he’s healthy and that can only bode well for him and the Red Sox down the stretch.

Of course when you have the Red Sox offense backing you up, it can make your suckiness all the more better.

Every member of the starting nine had at least one hit. Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia, Big Papi and Jarrod Saltalamacchia led the way with two each. Carl Crawford and Pedroia also added stolen bases.

Tonight’s matchup on the mound should be a heavyweight battle as Josh Beckett and Felix Hernandez take the hill. Hopefully the Red Sox offense can forget that it’s Beckett on the mound and pretend it’s someone else. Then maybe they’ll score more than 3.17 runs per game for him.

Former Patriot Corwin Brown Ends Standoff

Local police were called to the Granger, IN home of former Patriots safety and defensive backs coach Corwin Brown around 1 p.m. CT for a domestic dispute.  With their arrival Brown allowed his wife and kids to leave the family house.

It was then that shots were fired inside the home.

The SWAT team and local police had surrounded Brown’s home and were engaged with him in a standoff that led to them shutting off the power to the house hoping he would give up.

After several hours with no movement, an unidentified male who is close to Brown, was able to talk him out of the house by telling him to be a “Michigan man and do what is expected of you.”

It was shortly after this plea that a wounded Brown surrendered to authorities.  He was taken by ambulance to South Bend Memorial Hospital where he is being treated for self-inflicted wounds.  It is unknown how serious those injuries are.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Police also said that Brown’s wife had suffered a head injury prior to being released from the house with the couple’s three children.

Brown, was a 4th round pick of the New England Patriots in 1993 out of the University of Michigan.  He played safety for the Patriots until 1996 when he was a member of the Super Bowl XXXI squad that lost to Green Bay.  He also played for the New York Jets and the Detroit Lions prior to retiring in 2000.

Brown then went into coaching where he held positions at the University of Virginia, with the New York Jets, the University of Notre Dame and last season with the New England Patriots.  He was not retained for 2011; it is believed that at some point last season he went missing in action for several days which eventually led to his dismissal from the staff at year’s end.

Evening Red Sox Delight – 8/12

John Lackey (L), Blake Beavan (R)

After taking two-of-three in Minnesota, the Boston Red Sox head to the Pacific Northwest for the weekend. There they’ll take on the Seattle Mariners in the first of a three-game set at Safeco Field starting tonight.

John Lackey, winner of five of his last six starts, goes for another in his 20th start of 2011. In his previous 19 starts, Lackey is 10-8 with a 6.14 ERA.
