My 2011 BlogPoll Preseason Top 25

As many of you know, I am one of the voters in the BlogPoll Top 25. Each week, bloggers across the country representing the various FBS schools get together and put together their own top 25’s. Here at SOX & Dawgs, we are representing the UConn Huskies. The votes are then tabulated on Mondays .

Each week we are asked to do an initial ballot. This allows you the reader to let us know in the comments whether you agree with my choices or not. The initial ballots will be done on Sunday.

After I check the comments for the initial ballot, I then resubmit my final ballot for the week. If there are comments, I’ll take them into consideration before submitting the final ballot by 8 a.m. on Monday.

But let me know if you agree with my picks. Otherwise, this will be the ballot I submit in on Monday.

Hurricane Irene Forces Red Sox-A’s To Play DH on Saturday

Here’s the release from the Boston Red Sox concerning the cancellation of Sunday’s game which will now be played on Saturday as part of a day-night doubleheader.

BOSTON, MA — The Red Sox announced today that the game against the Oakland Athletics originally scheduled for Sunday, August 28, at 1:35 p.m., has been moved to Saturday, August 27, at 5:00 p.m., as part of a split doubleheader at Fenway Park. The start time of the Saturday regularly scheduled game has been moved to 12:00 noon. The changes were made after consulting with Red Sox private weather service Telvent DTN, which provided a long-range forecast of potential severe weather in the greater Boston area due to Hurricane Irene on late Saturday and throughout the day and into the evening on Sunday.

Boston Red SoxFans holding tickets for Saturday’s regularly scheduled game may use them for game one of the doubleheader, which is scheduled to begin at the new start time of 12:00 noon. All gates for game one will open at 10:30 a.m.

Fans holding tickets for the Sunday match up may use those tickets for game two on Saturday, which is now scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. All gates for game two will open 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one.

The current forecast calls for a consistent period of moderate to heavy rain and strong winds beginning late in the day on Saturday and continuing through Sunday evening as Hurricane Irene moves up the east coast and into New England.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

“With a forecast that calls for potentially heavy rains and high winds on Sunday, we felt it was necessary and prudent to move the Sunday game to Saturday, also,” said Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino. “This will not only give us the best opportunity to play the scheduled games, but also help to insure that traveling conditions are safer for our fans. We apologize for the inconvenience these changes will cause our fans this weekend, both those coming to the ballpark and those tuning in to the game on radio or television. On behalf of John, Tom and our entire front office, I also want to express gratitude for the flexibility that our players and our fans have shown this season as, together, we’ve dealt with an extraordinary number of weather-related scheduling issues.”

The decision to move the game times was made in collaboration with Major League Baseball, the MLB Players Association, the Red Sox players, and the Oakland Athletics.

The Red Sox would like to remind fans that up to several hundred day-of-game tickets are also available for these games, and every other game, at the Gate E Ticket Window beginning 90 minutes before first pitch.

Both games will be televised on NESN and broadcast in English on WEEI 850 AM and in Spanish on WWZN 1510 AM.

Breaking News: Michael Box To Transfer From UConn

Michael Box (4), a potential quarterback choice for UConn, hands off during the final of three open practices for UConn football in Storrs on Saturday morning.

According to Chuck Banning of The Day, UConn redshirt sophomore quarterback Michael Box has decided to leave the UConn Huskies football program and transfer to another school.

Box had been competing with freshman Michael Nebrich, redshirt freshman Scott McCummings and redshirt junior Johnny McEntee for the top spot at quarterback for the Huskies. It had been reported in the media that Neibrich and McEntee were leading the way.

UConn head coach Paul Pasqualoni said yesterday after practice that he probably wouldn’t name a starter until gametime at the home opener next Thursday against Fordham at Rentschler Field.

Box saw action in five games for the Huskies last season. He seven the ball five times for 21 yards and was 6-of-17 for 65 yards and one interception. His only start last year came against the Louisville Cardinals in which he had to leave after suffering a concussion.

If the report is true, Box would be the fifth UConn player to transfer since Pasqualoni took over. Dwayne Difton, Leon Kinnard, Gerrard Sheppard and Malik Generett are the other four players who have left the UConn football program.

Update 8/26: Desmond Conner of the Hartford Courant reports the Box has been granted his release from the UConn football program.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 8/25

Andrew Miller (L), Alexi Ogando (R)

After another rout last night, the Boston Red Sox look to avoid a split of their four-game series in the finale tonight against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. and will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Rangers broadcast area, you can catch the game on Fox Sports Southwest. If you don’t live in either market, you may be in luck as the MLB Network is also scheduled to have coverage of tonight’s game. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Andrew Miller will toe the slab tonight for the Red Sox in his 10th start (12th appearance) of the season. In his previous 11 appearances (nine starts), Miller is 5-1 with a 4.99 ERA. He has not faced the Rangers this season. In fact, he’s only made one career apperance against them and that was back in 2006 when he was a member of the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

Alexi Ogando makes his 25th start as he looks to help his team to a split of the four-game set. In his previous 24 starts, Ogando is 12-5 with a 3.30 ERA. He has not faced the Red Sox this year. He has made four career appearances against them though. All of those came in 2010 out of the bullpen in which he was 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA (1 ER/4.1 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/25

David Ortiz(notes) #34 of the Boston Red Sox prepares to bat against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on August 24, 2011 in Arlington, Texas.

Coming into last night’s game, Josh Beckett was getting 3.73 runs of support per game from the Boston Red Sox offense. Before he even stepped on the mound in an eventual 13-2 win over the Texas Rangers, Beckett had already gotten four runs from the offense.

It made you wonder, did the offense forget he was was pitching? Or did he have some “words of encouragement” for the boys to get him some run support?

Whatever the case may be, it was nice to see Beckett get some support and do what he does best. Now hopefully the offense can do the same thing on Friday night to get Tim Wakefield his 200th win finally.

On Tuesday night, Jacoby Ellsbury returned the lineup and the offense exploded. Last night, David Ortiz returned to the lineup and well took the first pitch he saw and lined it for a single. The much maligned Carl Crawford was the hero though for the Red Sox offense last night. Well I should say one of many heroes but he was the main catalyst.

Crawsome finished the night 2-for-3 with 5 RBIs. His two hits were a 2-run double and 2-run homer. His other RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the 5th.

For the second straight night, the every member of the starting nine had at least one hit. Ellsbury led the way with three hits including a two-run homer in the 6th inning. Adrian Gonzalez had two hits and RBIs, including his third home run in two days, and Dustin Pedroia added two hits and two RBIs to the cause as well.

Big Papi finished the night with two hits and Darnell McDonald added two hits as well.

One thing of note is that Ryan Lavarnway made his catching debut in the 8th inning last night. It was thought that he might not see anything behind the plate but obviously with such a big lead, it was a perfect time to get a little experience under his belt.

Obviously besides the win, the best part of the night is the fact that the win got the Red Sox back on top in the AL East. Thanks to former Red Sox OF Coco Crisp, the Oakland A’s beat the New York Yankees last night 6-3 in 10 innings. So be sure to buy Coco a beer if you see him out in Boston over the weekend since the A’s are coming to town.

We’ll be back later today with the lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and more for this evening’s game. But for now enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
