According to Chuck Banning of The Day, UConn redshirt sophomore quarterback Michael Box has decided to leave the UConn Huskies football program and transfer to another school.
Box had been competing with freshman Michael Nebrich, redshirt freshman Scott McCummings and redshirt junior Johnny McEntee for the top spot at quarterback for the Huskies. It had been reported in the media that Neibrich and McEntee were leading the way.
UConn head coach Paul Pasqualoni said yesterday after practice that he probably wouldn’t name a starter until gametime at the home opener next Thursday against Fordham at Rentschler Field.
Box saw action in five games for the Huskies last season. He seven the ball five times for 21 yards and was 6-of-17 for 65 yards and one interception. His only start last year came against the Louisville Cardinals in which he had to leave after suffering a concussion.
If the report is true, Box would be the fifth UConn player to transfer since Pasqualoni took over. Dwayne Difton, Leon Kinnard, Gerrard Sheppard and Malik Generett are the other four players who have left the UConn football program.
Update 8/26: Desmond Conner of the Hartford Courant reports the Box has been granted his release from the UConn football program.
