Sure the UConn Huskies scored 20 points in their 24-20 loss to the Iowa State Cyclones so yes the headline may be a little misleading. Just give me a moment to explain myself and you’ll understand what I mean.

When your defense gets three interceptions of the first four passes and you come away with three points, it’s not a good thing. The Huskies offense could have put this game away early but they didn’t.

After the first interception by Dwayne Gratz, one of three UConn QB’s, Johnny McEntee gave the ball right back on the first snap when he threw an interception. Both teams failed to score on their ensuing possessions (ISU punted, UConn kicker Dave Teggart missed a 41 yard field goal).

Byron Jones got the ball back for the Huskies with another interception of Steele Jantz. The Huskies started at the Cyclones 34 yard line only to get no yardage on the first downs. They had to settle for a field goal and a 10-0 lead.

Two plays after the kickoff, Jory Johnson had the third interception of Jantz which he returned to the Iowa State 28. The Huskies once again failed to capitalize as the drive stalled out at the Iowa State 16 and once again Teggart missed the field goal, this time from 43 yards.

Say the Huskies score touchdowns on all three turnovers, they’re up 28-0. At the very least, they should have at least been up 16-0.

And while the strength of the team may be the defense, it’s also the defense that is allowing big plays that come back to haunt them.

After the Huskies stuffed the Cyclones for a loss of nine yards on two running plays, Jantz hit one of his receivers for a 48 yard gain. A nine yard run followed up a 26 yard run and the Cyclones were in the red zone trailing 10-7.

They were burned in the third quarter on a little trickeration from Iowa State and they fell behind. The Huskies did grab the lead in the 4th quarter only to have the Cyclones come back down the field and score.

The defense can’t help the team win ball games when they give up the big plays especially when the offense can’t capitalize on turnovers created by the defense. It also doesn’t help when you have some turnovers of your own (the McEntee interception, D.J. Shoemate fumble).

Until head coach Paul Pasqualoni decides on a quarterback, the offense is going to continue to look inept. They have absolutely no rhythm out there because of the three-man rotation. To me, this hurts the offensive line because each one of three is different.

After watching the game tonight, the best bet to me is to put Scott McCummings at the helm of the offense. He’s the only QB of the three to pass for a touchdown in a game. Having one QB at all times would be the best thing going forward.

With two games against MAC teams coming up, there’s still hope for the Huskies to turn around the season. If not, I wouldn’t be making any plans for a bowl game because honestly, if the offense doesn’t start to shape up, they’ll be lucky if they got to three wins this season.

Offensive Player of the Game:

Darius Reynolds of Iowa State had a huge game as he had four catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensive Player of the Game:

Jory Johnson had a huge game defensively for the Huskies as he finished with 10 tackles (three solo, seven assisted) and an interception.

Turning Point(s) of the Game:

When the Huskies only scored three points off of the three Iowa State turnovers, the momentum quickly swung in Iowa State’s favor.

The second turning point came on fourth and 2 at the Iowa State 38 late in the fourth quarter. The Huskies couldn’t get the play in and were forced to call a timeout. Johnny McEntee then gave the ball to the Cyclones when his pass went incomplete. The Huskies could only stop the clock twice instead of three times and only had 40 seconds to go the length of the field. Obviously you can tell from the final score they didn’t make it. Had they had that timeout, they may have had a better chance of scoring.

Offensive Notes:

Johnny McEntee was 13-of-30 for 188 yards with one interception. Michael Nebrich was 1-of-3 for four yards. Scott McCummings was 1-of-3 for 39 yards and one touchdown pass. He also rushed for 39 yards and a touchdown. After two straight 100 yard games, Lyle McCombs came back to earth with 46 yards on 18 carries. Isiah Moore had a huge game receiving with eight catches for 143 yards. Kashif Moore caught three balls for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Defensive Notes:

Jory Johnson led the Huskies with 10 tackles and had an interception. Blidi Wreh-Wilson added nine tackles while Dwayne Gratz and Yawin Smallwood had eight. Gratz also chipped in with an interception. Kendall Reyes had six tackles and one sack with Harris Agbor adding five tackles and a sack. Byron Jones had two tackles and an interception.

Special Teams Notes:

Cole Wagner had six punts in which he averaged 40.2 yards. Not one of his punts were downed inside of the 20. Dave Teggart was 2-for-4 on field goals. He missed from 41 yards and 43 yards while hitting from 52 yards and 50 yards. One of Chad Christen’s kickoffs went out of bounds. This is a big no-no. Nick Williams had two punt returns in which he got -3 yards. He returned five kickoffs for 117 yards with a long of 37.

Injuries:

There were no injuries for UConn during the game that I saw.

After falling last night to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox look to prevent them from getting any closer in the AL Wild Card standings tonight in game two of a four-game set from historic Fenway Park.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rays television market, you can catch the game on Sun Sports. Depending on where you live, you might also be able to catch the game on the MLB Network. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Josh Beckett returns to the hill for his 28th start of 2011 after suffering an ankle injury on September 5th. In his previous 27 starts, Beckett is 12-5 with a 2.49 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Rays this season and is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER/17 IP). He’s made 18 career starts against the Rays and is 8-4 with a 2.94 ERA. Ten of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 6-1 with a 3.11 ERA.

James Shields looks to pull the Rays to within two games of the Red Sox in the race for the playoffs in his 31st of 2011. In his previous 30 starts, Shields is 15-10 with a 2.70 ERA. He’s made four starts this season against the Red Sox and is 2-2 with a 2.87 ERA. He’s made 20 career starts against the Red Sox and is 7-11 with a 4.58 ERA. “Sunday MLB on TBS” continues on September 18 with an American League match-up between two division rivals and Postseason contenders when the Boston Red Sox host the Tampa Bay Rays at 1:30 p.m. (ET).

Leading off the day’s action will be a special half-hour edition of MLB on Deck at 1 p.m. (ET) with Matt Winer (host) in studio alongside Dennis Eckersley (analyst), Cal Ripken (analyst) and David Wells (analyst).  The show will feature TBS’ announcer Brian Anderson’s full interview with Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers who discuss the team’s Postseason prospects and Fielder’s impending free agency.

Following the pre-game show, David Ortiz and the Red Sox will host Evan Longoria and the Rays at 1 p.m. (ET).  Recent 200-game winner Tim Wakefield (7-6) is scheduled to start for the Red Sox against the Rays’ starter David Price (12-12).  Play-by-play announcer Matt Vasgersian will call the game alongside analyst John Smoltz in the broadcast booth with Jaime Maggio (reporter) providing updates throughout the game.

Beginning on September 30, TBS will begin televising the 2011 MLB Postseason for the fifth consecutive year.  The network will provide exclusive coverage of all four MLB League Division Series (ALDS & NLDS) and the National League Championship Series (NLCS).

TBS has served as the exclusive home of Major League Baseball’s Division Series (DS) and one League Championship Series (LCS) since 2007, has broadcasted MLB games for more than 30 years and was home of the Atlanta Braves from 1977-2007.

As we move on to week three for the UConn Huskies football team, it’s time for another Q&A with a blogger from the opponent.

Now on to the questions for the week.

1. After the big win on Saturday over Iowa, do you expect a letdown from the Cyclones?

Cyclone Planet: Paul Rhoads has three signature wins in his career so far.  In his first year he knocked off Nebraska in Lincoln in 2009 and then beat Texas in Austin the following year.  After the Nebraska win, the Cyclones lost at Texas A&M, 35-10.  The Cyclones were losing at half-time to a bad Kansas team the week after they beat the Horns.  In the second half, the Cyclones scored 21 points and eventually beat the Jayhawks, 28-16.

I don’t think the Cyclones are going to have letdown against the Huskies.  I’m sure Paul Rhoads has been preaching to the team to focus on this week’s game and put the last week’s win behind them.  The players seem focus from what I’ve read on Twitter and through the local press.

2.  UConn’s defense has allowed just 138 yards rushing this season. How will Shontrelle Johnson try and breakthrough the stout defense of the Huskies?

CP: Shontrelle Johnson’s success depends on the play of the offensive line.  In the first game against Northern Iowa, All-Big 12 OT Kelechi Osemele didn’t play a lot due to an injury and OG Hayworth Hicks didn’t play due to a suspension.  Shontrelle Johnson struggled and only rushed for 27 yards on 9 carries against Northern Iowa.  Johnson rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries the following week against the Hawkeyes when both Osemele and Hicks returned to the field.

Shontrelle Johnson’s greatest strength is his ability to change directions in an instant and juke past defenders.

3. How do the Cyclones plan to stop the rushing attack of the Huskies?

CP: Iowa State will be able to stop the rushing attack of the Huskies if the defensive line can hold their ground and allow the linebackers to make the plays.  Iowa State’s defense is led by their two All-Big 12 caliber linebackers in A.J. Klein and Jake Knott.  Alongside Knott and Klein is Matt Tau’fo’ou who racked up 8 tackles against Iowa.  I think you get my point that Iowa State’s linebacking core is pretty dang good and may be the best in the Big 12.  Besides the linebackers, the secondary have done a good job of coming up and stopping the runner.  I’ve noticed free safety Jacques Washington in particular making some plays near the line of scrimmage.  Stopping the run should be Iowa State’s main priority on defense on Friday.

4. How can UConn put pressure on Steele Jantz behind your huge offensive line?

CP: Your best bet it is to attack the freshman center Tom Farniok and sophomore left guard Ethan Tuftee because of their inexperience.

Farniok, Tuftee, and the offensive line as a whole were great against Iowa but the performance against Northern Iowa wasn’t the same.  When Osemele and Hicks were out of the game, the remaining members of the line really struggled.  Northern Iowa was putting a lot of pressure on Steele Jantz, sometimes with only a 3-man rush.  It was the worst performance by the Cyclone offensive line in a long time but like I said earlier, the line was great against the Hawkeyes.  If  the Huskies get pressure on Jantz, they must be able to contain him.  Last week, the Hawkeyes got pressure a couple times but Jantz was able to somehow escape the pocket and make big plays.  Cyclone fans were calling him “Houdini” after the game on Saturday.

5. Besides the stars, who are one or two players Huskies fans should keep their eyes on

CP: The first player I would watch out for is wide receiver Aaron Horne.  This is Horne’s first year with the Cyclones after he transferred with Steele Jantz from City College of San Francisco.

Horne was Jantz’s go-to guy in the Northern Iowa game as he caught seven passes including one that lead to the game-winning touchdown.

He made a big play on a short pass and it ended up being a 57-yard gain against Iowa last week.  Without him, I doubt we would currently be 2-0.  Another player that flies under the radar is punter Kirby Van Der Kamp.  I know, I’m naming a punter as a player to watch but is crazy how much of a difference this guy makes.  As a freshman last year, he had the 13th highest average in the nation.  He consistently puts the opponent in bad field position and has been a key to Iowa State’s early success.

6. What is your prediction for the final score of the game?

CP: It will be interesting to see how the Cyclones perform on national television and being on the road for the first time this year.  I think the Clones will escape East Hartford with a win, 24-14.

Another game against the Tampa Bay Rays and yet another loss for the Boston Red Sox. This time it was Jeremy Hellickson who had the honors of shutting down the vaunted Red Sox offense in their 9-2 win.

With the win, the Rays cut the Red Sox lead to three games in the AL Wild Card. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are also lurking at four games behind in the wild card standings. The New York Yankees were off on Thursday night so the Red Sox trail them by 4.5 games for first place in the AL East.

Obviously the concern isn’t winning the division. It’s holding on for the wild card. And with three more games left against the Rays and their starting pitching, it’s looking more and more bleak.

It’s hard to keep up your spirits right now when it comes to the Red Sox. For as good of team as we’ve seen this season, outside of the first month and the last few weeks, you want more out of them. We know what they expect of themselves hence as fans of the team why our hopes are high.

The injuries are most definitely taking a major toll on this team.

In any other circumstances, Kevin Youkilis wouldn’t be playing with his hip issues and sports hernia. Normally if you take his bat out of the lineup, it’s not a good situation. Well he hasn’t been hitting since returning and you can everything is bothering him at the plate. But with Jed Lowrie battling shoulder troubles and Mike Aviles not being the same type of hitter as Youk, what else can Terry Francona due.

You have to wonder how this game would have turned out had Kyle Weiland not broken B.J. Upton‘s bat in the 3rd inning.

Weiland started the game off by retiring the first seven batters he faced for John Jaso started the hitting for the Rays with a double. After getting Reid Brignac to pop out, Weiland walked Desmond Jennings. He then broke Upton’s bat but the bat and the ball got to Marco Scutaro simultaneously and both went through his leg allowing Jaso to score.

Then he left a fastball over the plate to Evan Longoria and just like that it was 4-0. It was a deficit the Red Sox wouldn’t recover from even as they forced Hellickson out of the game in the 6th after working his pitch count up to 117.

The Red Sox have Josh Beckett on the hill later today and we aren’t sure what were going to get since this is his first start since injuring his ankle. We can only hope the ankle doesn’t bother him because right now, it seems like the Red Sox are hanging on by a thread and a prayer.

Simply put, we need Beckett to be Beckett and for the offense to be the offense. Otherwise, there’ll be more panic tonight in the streets of Boston then there was last night.
