Patriots Undefeated In Gillette Openers, De-Energize The Bolts 35-21

New England Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork (75) runs over cornerback Devin McCourty (32) with the football after intercepting a pass as San Diego Chargers running back Mike Tolbert (35) reaches out to bring him down in the second quarter of an NFL fooball game Foxborough, Mass., Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011.

Gillette Stadium is a magical place not only for the New England Patriots as a team but for QB Tom Brady as well.  The Patriots opened the home portion of their schedule on Sunday with a familiar result, a win.

After beating the San Diego Chargers 35-21 the Patriots are now unbeaten in all 10 Gillette Stadium home openers and have beaten the Chargers twice in that steak.  The team as a whole has not lost at Gillette now in it’s last 18 regular season games and Brady has a personal win streak of 29 games in his home venue.

Employing a bend but not break style defense against a powerful San Diego offense New England allowed 470 total yards (98 rushing, 372 passing), 29 first downs and the Bolts were 10 for 12 on 3rd down conversions.

QB Philip Rivers was 29 of 40 for 378 yards with 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s he also lost a fumble.  WR Vincent Jackson had 10 catches for 172 yards and 2 TD’s while 2nd year RB Ryan Matthews was over 100 combined yards offensively with 64 yards and a TD on 12 carries and 62 receiving yards on 7 catches.

But the big story for the Patriots defense was four turnovers (2 INT’s and 2 fumbles recovered) and the 3 defensive stops of the high powered Chargers offense inside the 30-yard line on consecutive drives.

The three consecutive defensive stops of Bolts inside their 30-yard line started with a first and goal to go from the five-yard line when they repeatedly stopped San Diego. First they stopped Matthews at the two, then RB Mike Tolbert for no gain, Rivers scrambled to the one on third down, and Tolbert got stuffed on 4th down just before the goal line.  The second stop was the Vince Wilfork interception of Rivers just before the half that led to 3 points as time expired and third drive was stopped with the Sergio Brown pick near inside the 10-yard line.

Leading the way defensively was LB Jerod Mayo who had 11 tackles and forced a fumble, Brown had 7 tackles and an INT and LB Rob Ninkovich who had 4 tackles, 1 sack and recovered a fumble.

While you can’t be thrilled with the first downs gained or the 3rd down efficiency of San Diego you can see some real change in the New England defense as a whole.

As Bill Belichick himself will tell you the season isn’t about one game but about putting together a series of games and getting better as you move forward.

Now when it comes to the offense, not even San Diego can compare when you talk about high powered.

Brady and Company had 28 first downs, were 7 of 11 on 3rd down conversions, and had no turnovers while once again amassing over 500 total yards, of which 423 were due to Brady’s passing efficiency.  Brady was a very sharp 31 of 40 with 3 touchdown passes and no interceptions and was sacked twice losing 13 yards.

Brady, once again, spread it around the field as WR Deion Branch had 8 catches for 129 yards.  WR Wes Welker had 7 grabs for 81 yards, TE Aaron Hernandez had 7 catches for 62 yards and 1 TD and TE Rob Gronkowski added 4 catches, 2 of them for TD’s and 86 yards.  Even WR Chad Ochocinco had a pair of really nice catches for 45 yards.

While on the ground it was “The LawFirm” leading the way with 70 yards on 17 carries and 1 rushing TD.

Overall not a bad day of work for the guys with the “Flying Elvi” on the sides of their helmets.

This was the 300th game of the Kraft family ownership they are 199-101.

70,000 “MHK” pins were handed out to fans today in honor of Myra Hiatt Kraft.

The spread (Patriots minus 7) was covered, as was the over/under (54).  I am now 2-0-0 vs. the spread and 2 of 2 calling the under/over.

The Patriots have scored 30 or more points in 10 consecutive regular season games.

The Patriots lead the overall series vs. San Diego 22-15-2

This was the second time that San Diego had been the opponent for a Patriots home opener at Gillette Stadium.  They faced the Chargers in Week 2 (home opener) in 2007 and won 38-14.  The Bolts also were the opponents in the 1997 home opener at Foxboro Stadium.

The Patriots have not lost a regular season game at Gillette Stadium since the 2008 season having won 18 consecutive regular season home games.

The Patriots are 10-0 in Gillette Stadium home openers.

Since 2002 when Gillette Stadium opened the Patriots are 68-14 at home.

The Patriots are 16-11 vs. the AFC West including playoffs since 2000.

Since 2001, the Patriots are 23-10 in September that’s the second best record among all NFL teams.

The Chargers are 0-3 in Patriots home openers.

The Chargers are 8-12-1 vs. Patriots all-time on the road.

The Bolts have lost 5 of the last 6 games in the series.

Since 2001 against the AFC East, San Diego is 9-16 including playoffs.

Norv Turner coached teams are 2-6 vs. New England.

Bill Belichick now has 179 wins – 10th all-time.  Bill Parcells is 9th with 183 wins.

Belichick said his decision to go for it on 4th and 4 was due to the condition of P Zoltan Mesko who had hurt his knee on the prior possession.

Tom Brady is now 6-2  vs. the Chargers.

Brady has won 29 consecutive regular season games at home, a NFL record.  His last regular season home loss was November 12, 2006 to the New York Jets.

Brady is 63-10 at home in the regular season in his career.

Brady was named FedEx Air Player of the Week for his Week 1 massacre of Miami.

Brady’s 3 TD passes give him 268 in his career he is 10th all-time.  Joe Montana is 9th with 273.

Brady is the only NFL quarterback to follow up a 500-yard game with a 400-yard game.

He is also just the 6th NFL quarterback with back-to-back 400-yard games.

Brady’s two week yardage total of 940 is second best all-time behind Phil Simms, who called today’s game for CBS, who had 945 in a two week span.

DT Vince Wilfork had his first career interception when he picked off Philip Rivers just prior to the half.

WR Wes Welker now has catches in 81 consecutive games, 67 as a Patriot.  The last time Welker did not have a catch in a game was 12/24/05 as a Dolphin.

TE Rob and TE Dan Gronkowski are the 4th set of brothers to play for the Patriots in the same season.  They join DE Whit and G Justin Canale (1968); WR Clarence and RB Robert Weathers (1983-84) and RB Chuck and CB Rod McSwain (1987).

Rob Gronkowski notched his 3rd career two touchdown game.

TE Aaron Hernandez was seen limping badly as he left the locker room after the game, he turned his knee late in the game.

RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis has a rushing touchdown in each game so far.

Former UConn OL Donald Thomas did not see any action in his first game as a Patriot.

New England is now plus 4 in turnover differential.  The offense has given up 1 INT and 0 fumbles, while the defense has 3 INT and 2 fumble recoveries.

Walt Anderson was the game referee.  Game time temp was 63 degrees and partly cloudy.

Attendance was 68,756.  The 184th consecutive sellout dating back to the 1994 season opener.

2011 BlogPoll Top 25 Ballot – Week 4

As many of you know, I am one of the voters in the BlogPoll Top 25. Each week, bloggers across the country representing the various FBS schools get together and put together their own top 25’s. Here at SOX & Dawgs, we are representing the UConn Huskies. The votes are then tabulated on Mondays.

Each week we are asked to do an initial ballot. This allows you the reader to let us know in the comments whether you agree with my choices or not. The initial ballots will normally be done on Sunday.

After I check the comments for the initial ballot, I then resubmit my final ballot for the week. If there are comments, I’ll take them into consideration before submitting the final ballot by 8 a.m. on Monday.

You can check out the ballot I submitted earlier today by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the homepage.

SB Nation BlogPoll College Football Top 25 Rankings »

My big mover in the polls this week is Boise State. They probably should have been higher in earlier polls but they weren’t. With Florida State losing though, it was easy then to jump Boise State into the polls.

Judging from earlier polls, I never believed in Michigan State because I had them unranked. Therefore I added five teams to the poll after knocking out five of them.

Like what you see? Disagree, let me know in the comments before I submit my final poll before 8 am tomorrow morning.

2011 NCAA Football Rankings – Week 4 (Sept. 18)

AP & USA Today Polls

The college football polls are out for the week and after a strong performance against Florida State last night, the Oklahoma Sooners remain No. 1 in both polls.

In the AP Poll, the Soonners are followed by LSU, Alabama, Boise State and Stanford. In the Coaches’ Poll, they are followed by Alabama, LSU, Boise State and Stanford. So basically, same top five, different order as LSU jumped over Alabama in the AP Poll.

For the second straight week, there are two Big East teams in the top 25 of both polls.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are ranked No. 16 in both polls. The South Florida Bulls come in at No. 18 in the AP Poll and No. 17 in the coaches poll.

And again for the second straight week, there are no Big East teams in the others receiving votes category.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/18

Ben Zobrist(notes) #18 of the Tampa Bay Rays, who earlier hit a two-run home run, celebrates with Evan Longoria(notes) #3 of the Tampa Bay Rays after a 4-3 win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park September 17, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Just when the confidence of Red Sox Nation was back at a comfortable level, it went right back down after the Boston Red Sox lost 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday at Historic Fenway Park.

Now the lead in the AL Wild Card is back down to three games over the Rays. The Los Angeles Angels lost so they remain five games back. And with the New York Yankees winning, their lead is 4.5 games over the local nine for the division title.

Once again, it was a bad 1st inning from the starting pitcher. This time around it was Jon Lester. He has been the same Lester we’ve seen in the past in his last few starts. He was partially done in by tight strike zone but also lacked some fastball command early on.

He left a fastball out over the plate to Ben Zobrist who hit a carbon copy of Evan Longoria‘s home run on Friday night, sans the review. His own wildness cost him in the 3rd inning when his wild pitch allowed Desmond Jennings to score from third base.

In his two starts against the Red Sox this season, Jeff Niemann had allowed a grand total of five hits. They did manage four of them this time around.

Although it did take three innings to get them when former Ray, now Sox leftfielder Carl Crawford led off the bottom of the 3rd with a single. Mike Aviles brought him in with a double. After a Marco Scutaro sacrifice bunt, Jacoby Ellsbury cut the lead to 3-2 with a sacrifice fly.

Longoria added the fourth run of the day for the Rays in the 5th. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, they would only manage to get one run back.

That run came in the 7th when Ellsbury singled in Crawford off Rays rookie phenom Matt Moore. But with Scutaro on third, Moore struck out Dustin Pedroia. They wouldn’t mount a threat in the 8th and 9th putting themselves back in the predicament they had before the start of Friday’s game.

Now that the pressure of getting the 200th win is off his back, there will be the same if not more pressure for Tim Wakefield to pitch well and help his team to a win. That’s because a four-game lead in the wild card standings sounds a heck of a lot better than a two-gamer.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 9/17

Jeff Niemann (L), Jon Lester (R)

As the Nation breathes a little easier after last night’s win by the Boston Red Sox, things will go back to being a little tense as the local nine and the Tampa Bay Rays do battle in game three of a four-game set.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. and will be broadcast to 66% of the country, including Alaska and Hawaii, on FOX. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

After a disappointing start his last time out, Jon Lester looks to rebound in his 29th start of the season. In his previous 28 starts, Lester is 15-7 with a 3.07 ERA. He’s made three starts against the Rays this season and is 1-2 with a 4.00 ER (8 ER/18 IP). He’s made 19 career starts against the Rays and is 10-5 with a 3.83 ERA. 12 of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 6-4 with a 4.01 ERA.

Jeff Niemann looks to the pull the Rays back closer to the Red Sox in his 22nd start of 2011. In his previous 21 starts, Niemann is 10-7 with a 3.97 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Red Sox this season and is 1-0 with a 1.06 ERA (2 ER/17 IP). And oh by the way, the Red Sox are .089 (5-56) against him this season. He’s made six career starts against the local nine and is 3-2 with a 3.24 ERA. Three of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 2-1 with a 5.09 ERA.

Jonathan Papelbon(notes) #58 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after striking out Evan Longoria(notes) #3 of the Tampa Bay Rays in the ninth inning to earn a 4-3 win at Fenway Park September 16, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts

Josh Beckett ‘s triumphant return to the Boston Red Sox along with a Mike Aviles game-winning home run got the fans in Boston and all of Red Sox Nation dancing for joy on Friday night.

It was the strong effort of Beckett along with the bullpen, including Daniel Bard (I know can you believe it?) and some timely offense that helped the Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on a cool, crisp fall-like night at Historic Fenway Park.

The win was huge for the Red Sox as it pushes their lead back to four games over the Rays in the AL Wild Card. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim also lost last night and fall to five games behind the Red Sox. The New York Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays so the Red Sox are just 3.5 games behind them for first in the AL East.

I said last night on Twitter during the game that I wasn’t concerned with the Red Sox winning the division. And I meant it. All that matters right now is the Red Sox make the playoffs. And to do that, they basically control their own destiny. Of course two more wins against the Rays would make that goal all the more easier to attain.

Josh Beckett(notes) #19 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after getting out of trouble in the fourth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park September 16, 2011 in Boston, MassachusettsThe main concern going into this game last night was how would Beckett’s ankle hold up. After all he was taking the mound for the first time in 11 days after injuring his ankle back on September 5th.

From the looks of it, he didn’t miss a beat although the Rays were able to get three runs off of him. Those runs just happened to be the first runs Beckett had allowed against them all season.

He gave up two of those runs in the 1st inning when Evan Longoria took him deep for a two-run johnson (must have been the good road beef). The offense backed him up though by getting the two runs back off the bats off Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz. The Rays would get their last run of the night in the 3rd.

But once again the Red Sox struck back in the bottom half of the inning when Big Papi brought in Pedroia to knot the game.

The unlikeliest of heroes, Aviles, put the Red Sox ahead for good in the 4th with a solo blast through the O in the Sports Authority sign over the Green Monster.

From there, it was up to Beckett and the bullpen to do their jobs. And as you can tell, they did.

Beckett scattered seven hits over six innings, allowing the three runs (two earned) to go along with a walk and seven strikeouts.

Alfredo Aceves made his inning of work a little eventful with two walks but also struck out two. Bard recovered from his little slide by striking out the side. He did walk one batter.

And of course, Jonathan Papelbon continued his dominance at the back end of the rotation by striking out two of the three batters he faced in the 9th to pick up his 30th save. He now has 30 saves in each of his first six seasons with the Red Sox. Can you say cha-ching?

Solid win for the boys and it couldn’t have come at better time. With the Nation panicking, the Red Sox kept their cool and did their jobs. Now as fans, we need to do our jobs and continue to support the team through the good and the bad. Hopefully in the end, we’re in the playoffs.

Because that’s what matters!!
