The Line/Prediction

As of Thursday the line on the game from Yahoo! Sports has the Patriots at MINUS 3 1/2.  They list the over under at 50 1/2.

My Prediction is Patriots 31, Eagles, 21.  Give the points (Patriots) and take the over.  I am 6-3-1 against the spread and 6 of 10 on calling the over/under in 2011.

Backcourt Duo Leads UConn Past UNC Asheville

If there’s been one constant for the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team this season, it’s been the play of sophomores Shabazz Napier and Jeremy Lamb.

Battle 4 AtlantisAnd it was that duo of Napier and Lamb who helped the Huskies to a 73-63 win over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis at Imperial Arena at Atlantis in the Bahamas.

The Huskies (5-0) advance to the semifinals tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. where they’ll take on the Central Florida Knights who beat the College of Charleston earlier in the day. UNC Asheville (2-3) will take on the College of Charleston at 7 p.m. in the losers bracket.

Napier and Lamb led all scorers in the game with 23 points each. Napier added seven assists while Lamb pulled down six rebounds. Andre Drummond made the first start of his career and scored nine points while grabbing five boards in 22 minutes. Roscoe Smith shared team-high rebounding honors with Lamb with six to go along with his seven points.

Matt Dickey paced the Bulldogs with 18 points while Jeremy Atkinson added 14 points and led all rebounders in the game with nine.  J.P. Primm chipped in with 10 points and had seven assists with Chris Stephenson adding nine points.

UConn got out of the gates quickly in this one as they raced out to a 16-3 lead. The Bulldogs would fight back though as they worked the lead down to eight when Primm hit a jumper with 11:07 to go in the first half.

From there, UConn would keep the lead between 10-14 points before an Alex Oriakhi old fashioned three point play pushed it to 17 points at 34-17 with 4:50 left in the half. The Bulldogs didn’t rollover and wait for their bellies to be rubbed though as they fought back with a 9-0 run to cut UConn’s lead to eight. Napier would send the Huskies into the locker room with a 11 point lead at 39-28 when he nailed a long range three with four seconds left.

The final outcome of this one was never in doubt during the second half.

The Bulldogs would get as close as seven points early in the half but for the most part UConn kept the lead around 10 points to help themselves get to the second round tomorrow.

With three games in three days and the quick turnaround tomorrow, you have wonder how tired Napier and Lamb will be after both playing 39 minutes on Thursday night. If this was later in the season though it might be a problem. After all, they both played five straight games in March. So this is probably nothing for both of them.

The good news for us Huskies fans who didn’t have HDNet and had to resort to other measures to watch the game, tomorrow’s game will be shown on Versus which means most of us can watch it.

Connecticut Whale 3, Portland Pirates 2 (OT)

By Brian Ring

Hartford, CT, November 23, 2011 – Brendan Bell’s second overtime goal in less than a week led the Connecticut Whale to a 3-2 victory over the Portland Pirates Wednesday night in Hartford.

CT WhaleWhale defenseman Tim Erixon assisted on all three of the team’s goals in the game, helping Connecticut to their third straight victory, all three wins coming either in overtime or the shootout. For the second straight game, the Whale rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win.

“It speaks to their character that they’re willing to fight right to the end there,” said Whale head coach Ken Gernander. “These guys push hard and pay the price to get the job done.”

The first period was scoreless, despite the Whale being outshot, 13-8, by the Pirates.  Connecticut had the better chances, but Portland goaltender Curtis McElhinney (33 saves) was up to the task, as he turned away numerous opportunities while helping to kill a Chris Summers penalty.

Evan Bloodoff scored the first goal of the game, putting the Pirates in the lead at 8:14 of the second period. Bloodoff rushed up the sideboards before cutting in at the circles and snapping a shot past Whale goaltender Cam Talbot’s (25 saves) blocker side. The goal was the first professional point for Bloodoff, who spent the last five seasons with the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL. Michael Stone and McElhinney both received assists on the goal.

The Pirates extended the lead to 2-0 at 13:43, as Ashton Rome buried a Summers rebound to Talbot’s left. The goal was Rome’s third of the season.

Blake Parlett got the Whale on the board and cut the visitors’ lead to 2-1 with just under three minutes remaining in the second period. John Mitchell curled around the Portland net, finding an open Parlett in the left circle, and Parlett wristed the puck past McElhinney. Erixon earned the secondary assist on the goal.

Jonathan Audy-Marchessault tied the game for the Whale with a shorthanded tally with just 1:11 remaining in the third period to send the match to overtime. Carl Hagelin’s backhand bid was kicked out to Audy-Marchessault, who persistently whacked at the loose puck until it went in the goal.

The Whale caught a break in overtime, when the Pirates’ Nick Ross was nabbed for hooking 1:44 into the extra period. With the man-advantage, Erixon quarterbacked the Whale power-play, his shot hitting McElhinney but bouncing right onto Bell’s stick with a virtually empty net. Bell settled the puck and put it in for the game-winner, his third goal of the season, for a 3-2 final score.

“He’s got good hands, there’s a lot in that package there,” said Gernander of Bell. “That’s one of the areas where it showed tonight.”

“I wanted to make sure I really buried it,” said Bell. “I took my time and tried to get it back there as quick as I could.”

Erixon earned his third helper of the night on the goal, with Mitchell notching his second assist.

The Whale will return to action after the Thanksgiving break with a pair of road tilts, taking on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Friday night (7:00) in GEICO Connecticut Cup action, before facing the Springfield Falcons Saturday night at the MassMutual Center (7:00). Connecticut will return home next Tuesday, when the Whale plays host to the Hershey Bears (7:00).

Red Sox Offer Arbitration to David Ortiz & Dan Wheeler

According to several media outlets, the Boston Red Sox have decided to offer arbitration to David Ortiz and Dan Wheeler. They had until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday night to do so.

Boston Red SoxThis means a few things for the Red Sox.

With the new CBA done, Ortiz is still a Type A free agent. So if he decides to sign with another team, the Red Sox will still receive two draft picks as compensation, a first rounder and a supplemental pick. They’ve already picked up two draft picks when the Phillies signed Jonathan Papelbon as he also fell under the new rules of compensation in the new CBA.

Ortiz can accept the offer and come back on a one-year deal worth more than the $12.5 million he made last year. It’s still quite possible he and the Red Sox can work out a new deal.

The move to offer arbitration to Wheeler is a little bit odd to me.

They had previously declined a contract option on him worth $3 million for 2012. Now by offering him arbitration should he accept, he’ll make more. They would receive a draft pick as compensation if he decides to sign with another team. According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, if Wheeler accepts, they’ll have to offer him at least $2.4 million.

Both players now have until December 7th to decide whether or not to accept the offer of arbitration from the Red Sox. If you’re Wheeler, I don’t see how you say no.

The Red Sox didn’t offer arbitration to Erik Bedard, J.D. Drew, Conor Jackson, Trever Miller, Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield.

Patriots Sign Former UConn Huskies OL Donald Thomas Again

Just a few days after being released by the New England Patriots, former UConn Huskies offensive lineman Donald Thomas finds himself back in the NFL again.

University of Connecticut's Donald Brown (34) looks to a referee to see if he scored at the end of the second half at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007. He was ruled just short of a touchdown, but UConn scored on the next play. At left is Pittsburgh's Mike Phillips and at right is UConn's Donald Thomas. With Matt Light suffering an injury in Monday night’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Patriots have re-signed Thomas to the 53-man roster. Stop me if you’ve heard this one about a 1,000 times this season (actually 17th roster move with him) but Ross Ventrone has been released to make room on the roster for Thomas.

Thomas was signed by the Patriots on September 14th and has seen action in four games this season with them.

The former Husky was a sixth round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2008. He started one game for the Dolphins in 2008 before being placed on injured reserve list. He played in all 16 games, starting 12 of them, for the Dolphins in 2009.

Bloguin Heisman Trophy Poll – Week 12

Bloguin Heisman TrophyEach week a group of Bloguin college football bloggers get together and put our votes in for the top Heisman Trophy candidates. Then after the votes are tabulated by Kevin over at College Football Zealots, the poll is released on Wednesday.

Here are the results for week 12 of the 2011 college football season. Be sure to head over Crystal Ball Run for a full look at the results for the week for more insight on the poll.

  1. Robert Griffin III (QB-Baylor)- 29 Points, 32.22%, 8 1st Place Votes
  2. Andrew Luck (QB-Stanford) – 18 Points, 20.00%, 4 1st Place Votes
  3. Trent Richardson (RB-Alabama) – 15 Points, 16.67%, 1 1st Place Vote
  4. Case Keenum (QB-Houston)- 12.5 Points, 13.89%, 0 1st Place Votes
  5. Montee Ball (RB-Wisconsin) – 7.5 Points, 8.33%, 1 1st Place Vote
  • Also Receiving Votes: Matt Barkley (QB- USC) 4 pts, Colin Klein (QB- Kansas State) 3 pts, Kellen Moore (QB- Boise State) 1 pt
  • Dropped Out: Brandon Weeden (QB- Oklahoma State), Justin Blackmon (WR- Oklahoma State), David Wilson (RB- Virginia Tech)

In case you were wondering, here’s how I voted this week:

1. Robert Griffin III, QB – Baylor: In continuing my what have you done for me lately theme, RGIII vaults from nowheresville USA in my ballot to the top after a stellar performance in an upset win over Oklahoma. RGIII was 21-of-34 for 479 yards and four touchdown passes. He also ran for 72 yards on 18 carries. With all of the upsets going on in college football right now, there is no clear cut favorite which might allow RG III or even another player to steal the Heisman away from everybody’s preseason and most of the season favorite Andrew Luck.

2. Case Keenum, QB – Houston: While Keenum didn’t break the bank in the win over SMU, he’s considered here because of his overall body of work this season. In the win over SMU, he only threw for 318 yards and one touchdown pass. The 318 yards were his second lowest of the season as was the one touchdown pass. But on the season, he’s thrown for 4,269 yards and 38 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

3. Kellen Moore, QB – Boise State: After his team suffered a tough loss their last time out, last weekend Moore made sure his Broncos weren’t going to be on the losing end again. He threw for 366 yards and four touchdown passes. He did have one interception though. His 35 touchdown passes this season match what he did last season when he was a Heisman finalist.

In The Red Zone – 11/23

In The Red Zone

When the offense was flopping pretty hard early on Monday night and Kansas City was moving with ease between the 20’s I was thinking holy crap it’s gonna be a long night.  This team, a two touchdowns plus favorite on all the sports books, is going to lose and do it in an ugly fashion.

I was having September flashbacks and remembering all the awful baseball we watched or listened to and envisioned the same fate last night for our football team.  If the Patriots had lost that game last night as ugly as it was starting to play out I’d have needed something harder than beer and fried chicken.

Then somewhere late in the second quarter they started to “matriculate the ball downfield”.  They had that nice wide-open pass to TE Rob Gronkowski that turned into a 52-yard TD reception.  They also moved the ball well but failed to get six when the other TE Aaron Hernandez couldn’t hold onto a Tom Brady bullet in the end zone.  They settled for a field goal.

In the third quarter the Patriots looked like a better team.  They played better on both sides of the ball getting yet another TD out of Gronk and then they put the dagger in the Chiefs when Julian Edelman ran back a punt 72-yards for a TD.  It put the game out of reach and the rest was really academic.

While the Patriots continue to play decent and the defense only allowed 3 points, albeit to a bad team, there are still some major questions moving forward.  You will see that they are the top rated team in the conference but they really aren’t playing the best.

This team is pretty beat up although they will never, ever use that as an excuse.  When you place 17 guys on the injury report during the week there is an injury epidemic.  Obviously most of them played but among the missing were 2 starting linebackers, a starting cornerback and a starting safety.

Luckily Bill Belichick does his best at getting the most out of players.  All you need to do is look at Edelman who Monday night was playing defensive back in the dime sets.  Look at players like S Ross Ventrone, S Sterling Moore, CB Philip Adams, CB Antwaun Molden, LB Jeff Tarpinian and the contributions they make when they’re called upon.

If this team is going to get past the first playoff game this year, they’re going to need to get some players healthy and continue to milk what they can from the no names at the end of the bench.

Head coach Bill Belichick had his weekly day after the game media meeting about the week ahead.

Even though New England has won 5 of the last 6 meeting between the clubs, Kansas City leads the all-time series 16-13-3.

The last Chiefs victory in Foxboro was on December 2, 1990 when they won 37-7.

If the playoffs were to start today the Patriots would be the #1 seed in the AFC have a bye and home field throughout the playoffs.

LB Dane Fletcher missed his 4th game with a thumb injury, WR Taylor Price (hamstring) was scratched with an injury for the third week.  LB Brandon Spikes (MCL) and S Patrick Chung (foot) both missed their second game in a row, LB Jeff Tarpinian was ill and RB Kevin Faulk was a scratch for the second time since coming off the pup with a knee injury.  QB Ryan Mallett was a healthy scratch.

In the game Monday night S James Ihedigbo injured his shoulder in first quarter, WR Deion Branch missed some time during the game with a tight hamstring.  C Dan Connolly aggravated his groin injury and CB Kyle Arrington suffered an arm injury in the 4th quarter.  They all returned to action during the game.  LT Matt Light had his leg rolled up on during the 4th quarter, he did not return and was seen leaving after the game in a golf cart with a boot on his foot.

Prior to the game New England released OL Donald Thomas and promoted S Ross Ventrone to the 53-man roster.  It was the one-zillionth roster transaction involving Ventrone in two seasons.

With some injuries occurring last night along the offensive line don’t be surprised if Thomas comes back this week once/if he clears waivers.

This is what Tom Brady had to say about the big win, not liking “Red Bull”, his high school freshman football team and never having tried coffee on WEEI AM/FM on Tuesday morning.

Brady’s 118th career win tied him with Johnny Unitas for 6th all-time.  Fran Tarkenton is 5th with 124.

Brady’s 2 TD passes give him 25 TD passes on the year and 286 TD passes in his career.

The 25-yard pass to RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis early in 3rd quarter pushed Brady past Boomer Esiason into 15th all-time in passing yards.

TE Rob Gronkowski’s 2 TD catches give him 6 games with 2 or more TD’s in his two-year career.  He also set a new NFL standard for TE’s with 20 TD catches in his first 26 games.  Mike Ditka was the previous fastest TE to 20 TD’s he did it in 31 games.

For the second week in a row Gronk was the Sox & Dawgs offensive player of the game.

Here is his interview after the game from the ESPN on field set.

WR Wes Welker now has catches in 92 consecutive games including playoffs, 75 as a Patriot.  The last time Welker did not have a catch in a game was 12/24/05 as a Dolphin.

WR Julian Edelman played DB in the dime package through out the game in 3rd and long situations for Kansas City.

Edelman returned a punt for his second career return TD.

CB Kyle Arrington had two-drive killing INT’s of Kansas City QB Tyler Palko.  He now has a league leading 7 INT’s on the season.

Arrington was the Sox & Dawgs defensive player of the game.

CB Phillip Adams had an INT of Chiefs QB Tyler Palko during the 4th quarter in the end zone that killed a Chiefs drive.  It was his first career INT.

Rookie RT Marcus Cannon (TCU) made his NFL debut in the 4th quarter.  It’s his first action after recovering from cancer.  That guy is a tank.  The offensive line of the future looks in good hands with Nate Solder and Cannon on it.

The offensive line in 2012 could very well be LT Solder, LG Logan Mankins, C Dan Koppen, RG Cannon and RT Sebastian Vollmer.  Those are some bad ass dudes.

Rookie RB Shane Vereen (California) scored his first NFL TD late in the 4th quarter.

Former Patriots OL Stephen Neal will be inducted in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

DT Vince Wilfork and his wife, Bianca, helped carry “Thanksgiving in a Basket” deliveries at Goodwill on Monday.

The special teams core four report.

DE Andre Carter has been resurrected in New England and he leads the team in sacks.

The Best and Worst of the Chiefs vs. Patriots game.

That was Chiefs QB Tyler Palko’s first NFL start and he was sacked 3 times and threw 3 INT’s all in New England territory; one was in the end zone.

Here’s the breakdown of the defensive snaps and the offensive snaps by Mike Reiss.

Pro Bowl voting is open feel free to cast your votes for deserving players.

New England plays the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at 4:15 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia PA.  Look for the Sox & Dawgs “In The Red Zone Game Preview” available on Friday.
